These three adverts a just brilliant, but they also make me sad as they highlight the loss of an entire working class ethos and culture. I'm not looking at the past through rose tinted spectacles, I know they weren't always "good" old days, but if you wander the East End of London now there are only tiny material glimpses of what was once a rock solid community based way of life.

Yes, it's still about & better still, when they look after it well & they get enough drinkers, to keep it fresh. (Often, not enough People are ordering it these days.) 😐 But nice, when You can find it. I think the 'Country House', in Earlsfield had it for a while. 🍺🙂

Wonderful, wonderful ads! I remember these when I was young. I used to drink 'Best' at the 'Blue Anchor' in Hammersmith back when it was still a traditional pub. No longer live in the UK, so ads like these just made me homesick! You can never really go back, but thanks for the memories: I most certainly will always remember a pint of Courage Best.

astralplainer - I used to drink in The Blue Anchor - also The City Barge on that stretch of the river. Happy days. Are those boozers still going or have they been ‘gentrified ‘ beyond recognition? Greetings from a homesick expat far far away. 🍻🇬🇧🇨🇦

@@rightmarker1 I'm afraid those two pubs are well and truly lost. All but the names remain. No smoking, gastro-type places that can no longer be called 'locals'. Mechanical bar tenders not interested in small talk, just getting paid. I could always find out what was going on around the place because I knew the landlord and the bar staff. Now even the patrons are from somewhere far away, with no link to the place. I'm afraid the sense of community that existed there during my youth has long disappeared. Shame. Those were the 'Best' of times!

if you watch the movie Bohemian Rhapsody you will see a shot of the Hammersmith Bridge and the pub next to the Blue Anchor. My favourite pub in that area is The Doves. I go there whenever I'm in London.

Does anyone recall the story behind the 'Gercha' ad ? I remember reading that they got an old guy in who used to do the lighting for old black and white films to light it. After watching him set up his lights they decided that the old boy had lost it but let him continue planning to re-shoot after he had gone so as not to offend him. When they watched the rushes they realised that the old fella had absolutely nailed it and they ran with the footage they had, But I can't recall the old guys name

@mrbillhicks Robert Krasker (El Cid, The third man etc) was the name of the lighting guy I was trying to think of but I still can't verify if the story regarding the production team thinking that he was past his best and were only letting him go through the motions so as to be kind to the old chap. Bob came out of retirement to light the Gercha ad and sadly passed away the following year in 1981
