Clearly from the thank you's above, I had a lot of help on this one, :).
This is my personal experience using the Fender Deluxe Tone Master and 64 Custom Deluxe Reverb Amps. It is NOT a paid promotion in any way. It is simply my experience with the amps and ....it was a good one. I look forward to hearing your experiences as well. I read all the comments and enjoy everyone that is a part of five watt world.
Thanks for watching.
Keith

A bandmates father gave me his 68 drip edge.. I was a young man at the time and didn't really know to much about it but I knew it sounded good. 15 years later I still have it and play it to this day and will till I'm dead.

My current rig is based around a Blackstar HT-5R and it rarely comes of the overdrive channel as its clean channel is really lackluster. Because of this, when I needed to track a cover of The Doors' Light My Fire for my studio apprenticeship a few years ago, I borrowed a friend's '68 Custom Reissue Deluxe. I absolutely fell in love with this amp. It doesn't have the Marshally drive of the Blackstar I dearly love, but those cleans are just perfect. They're bright and crystal clear, but remain very warm and lively. The spring reverb is in a league of its own and while in general I prefer the smoother pulse of a bias tremolo, the Deluxe's optical tremolo isn't too choppy and is really nice at lower depth settings. If I could, I'd do a two amp setup, with a Deluxe for my cleans and the HT-5R for the drive, and I'd be a very happy camper.

I want to say your content is so enjoyable and functional. I own a Tonemaster Deluxe with the upgraded software and a Creamback. I did this as soon as the software was available before your video. I am so happy to feel validated with your conclusions. I agree with Zak and you, this is the one amp solution. No matter what pedals I put in front of this amp, I am never disappointed. Thank again.

I’d like to challenge you on your celestion selection the crime back. I started playing in 1964 and love vintage equiptment. I happened to walk into this tiny music store in WISCONSIN and he had a once very popular Acoustic 412 cabinet with 2 horns by Acoustic. The model 405 Transducer. It was in decent shape so I asked him how much. He said 100 bucks cash. I am familiar with the amp. The head is solid state but incredibly engineered and many popular bands of the 70s used them. I had no idea what it had for speakers. I saw 4 aluminum cones through the grill and hoped it was full of JBL D120s. When I got it home and plugged it in to a bandmaster head, the sound was incredible nut I didn’t like the horns. You can turn them off but stil. So I opened the front, the back is sealed, those acoustic grills are heavily velcrowed in, then the speakers are removed from the front. What I found in there was 4 Celestion Green backs G 12 M made in England 15 ohm 25 watts and here was the huge surprise, instead of the traditional 75 hz low end, these were 55hz. I did some research on the 55 HX model and discovered they had become Hendrix favorite. They are still made but if you search for them you’ll probably find the 30 watt version. Don’t settle for those. Your DR is 22 watts. I put my speakers into a Marshall 4 12 cabinet. But it was the cheaper version not the flag ship. Still it must be tuned properly because for the heck of it I wanted to hear how clear and low they would go. Put the amp on 7 and strummed an open E chord. I was blown away. I never ever heard lows and mid s like what came out of that cab. Im currently looking for a cheap marshal 4x12 cabinet with or without speakers. Actually the speakers that came with it are celestion 75 watts each and sell for 135.00 ea at Sweetwater . They did sound decent. Until I compared them with my 4 green backs. You know usually I’m not the lucky one. Those speakers in mint shape and vintage broken sell for over 200 bucks like 230 to 250 ea. Maybe you can keep your eyes open for that Acoustic cabinet. If it’s got aluminum cones even if it’s 300 buy it. Im still trying to get rid of the carcas although they sounded great in that cabinet and it’s built like a tank. It’s very deep, on wheels and compartmentalized. Trust me, if you live that rich vintage tone you have to try the 25 watt, G 12 M in 55 hz. As I said mine is 15 ohm but wired in series/parallel you can get 8 ohm and wire 4 16 ohm speakers in parallel you get 4 ohms. I think with higher ohm speakers you have more versatility depending on quantity. Any rate I’m 66 years old and I’ve never heard a better sounding speaker cab than my cheap marshal with my oddball 55 hz 25 watt 15 ohm greenbacks. I really hope you find a couple and do a vid on them. I didn’t know about the 55 hz option but mim glad I found out. You realize it wasn’t till the late 70s early 80s there were no proper bass cabinets or bass amps except maybe the svt and the sunn collusiem. Both monsters. Oh and the little known 400 watt fender 400 s I think. So many people played bass through this acoustic or Kustom (those padded amps) had a good sounding ported cabinet, but bass amplification was very limited in the beginning. I think those 55 hz celestion s were like the JBL D140s you could order in your dual showman to make a bass amp. I had a black faced dual showman guitar cabinet with 2 JBL D130s also 15 but not the low range. Good luck.

I'm with you on avoiding the weight of the real originals. I no longer can lift the '64 Twin Reverb I had back then. The van we used was an old ice-cream freezer truck with a floor bed at about waist height so humping that beauty up there was ok at age 25, we even had a Hammond B3 with Leslie that took a few of us to get it on-board. Now I'm considering selling my Hot Rod Deluxe and go digital modeler. Thanks for the run-down on the Deluxe Reverb, it could be just the thing for me. Cheers, sideman

After 30 years of mainly british amps (Hiwatt, Vox, Marshall) I bought my '68 Deluxe a few years back and love it. It may be the perfect, club amp. Where my 1974x really needs to be cranked for that sweets spot, the DR sounds awesome at all volumes. I can get it to sound like a small Marshall combo, especially with the celestion but it's hard to get a Marshall Combo to, sound like a Fender. I don't even attenuate at home I barely crack the volume at 2 - its TV level, gorgeous clean. throw a TS808 in front and it's great. At jams or live I crank it to about 7 and roll my volume back to clean it up - it's amazing. Fits in taxi. This amp does everything but make me a sandwich. Classic.

Thanks for the great video, Keith! I had an original tonemaster deluxe for a year and it was such a great amp in my apartment. But I was offered a '66 deluxe reverb a few months back for a decent price and couldn't refuse. Wanted to try a vintage version for awhile and now I'm in a house where I can turn things up a bit more. So I sold the tonemaster to fund the purchase. And of course, had to sink a few hundred into the '66 to get it up to snuff. Vintage gear indeed costs $$$$ in upkeep. I'd like to get a TM again and will wait for used bargain. I really think they are the best buy in amps going right now.

One of the few times where on my own the less is more view of life paid off after lugging around a 19 7200 W Marshall super lead for 40 years I came upon a fantastic little tamp, a mesa, boogie subway rocket a 20 Watt Little giant, powered by a pair of EL 84 and a handful of 12ax7’s this little Amp does it all it’s an incredible contender to the fender deluxe reverb it does everything the deluxe does but just a little bit better. They’re inexpensive they can play for days and they sound fantastic. It’s something you should take a look at.

Someone asked about a Quilter.....I have the Quilter Aviator Cub....it completely fills the void of the Deluxe Reverb....the DR hand wired, silver face and blackface vintage models are some my favorite amps...it has 3 channels..blonde, tweed, blackface...just stellar modeling and weighs 22 pounds...can go to 50 watts, and has the best FDR Reverb sound I’ve ever heard compRed to even the standard FDR. It’s a great alternative for those that can’t afford a vintage or handwired DR...$6oo price range new....I played it beside a well broken in DR, it sounded stellar....the DR owner went out and bought a Quilter!

As a longtime player and teacher in LA, I always appreciate your straight to the point vids. Have slogged thru a lifetime of amps, always Fenders, and have a good seasoned view of many. My personal favs were browns, Concerts and, especially, Pros. A cranked Pro (non-reverb) thru a '54 Gold Top is hard to beat. We guitarists are never satisfied, always chasing the Grail. After trying 15-20 RI 65 DRs, I found a great one. But when a mint, one owner '64 fell into my lap, well, contest over. Covers all the bases, nice tight sound, we're at one. Sorry, not one to share but this struck a note.

Agreed. The Fender Deluxe Reverb is by far my favorite guitar amp ever. #2 would be a 1974 Fender Bassman 100, which I used for guitar back in the day. It sounded great, particularly when it was cranked and overdriven. But, it was SO loud at that level, it blew away the rest of the band. Also, it was SO bulky and SO heavy, I'm not sure I could manage it now.

Sir, “bada bing”, you da man 👍🏼. You have answered all my questions in this one video. I have owned and used most black face Fenders with the Vibrolux Reverb being my fave but never owned a Deluxe Reverb. Not sure why I skipped over them. (Used Marshalls to but thats another story). As the jams and gigs have become quieter the Deluxe seems to be the go to more than ever. I currently use a Headstrong Lil King S with 6L6 output @ 28 Watts. Based on a 64 Princeton Reverb (Wayne at Headstrong is a great guy and builder) it has the ability to accept other output tubes including 6V6 for lower output. It has a a warmer attack vs the Fenders I’ve used that have the “snap” in the front end. Now that I’ve seen this video I am now wanting a Deluxe in the stable! Think it’s the one I have been searching for and didn’t realize it. Thank you! Sorry so wordy, toooo much coffee! And then! Lol PS- Is the Revv still lurking around the stable as a grab and go?

I'm glad I bought an original '64 Deluxe Reverb and didn't worry about reliability since I've never had a problem with mine, and if there ever was a problem it can be fixed, it's the real thing that has a certain mojo and history like a vintage guitar or a worn in pair of boots, and instead of losing value the older it gets it's worth more.

Maybe it is just my luck, but I have had two fairly expensive pieces of digital "amplifier" gear simply stop working for no apparent reason. The first was a powered mixer which was under warranty, yet after about 2 months, the authorized tech I sent it too could not fix it. I was in a gigging band at the time, and bought an analog Yamaha in the meantime. The second piece was a modelling / effects unit that I bought used and once again, just one day simply stopped working? Neither situation involved any type of abuse. I have also heard that many Fender amp techs will not work on these DR digital amps. I have not confirmed this, but my experience gives me the sense that this is true. That said, I have played both of these DRs and admit that they sound great and very convincing. For me, I'm sticking with my little lunchbox Vox Night Train 15 that I have used for over ten years and has passed the test. Great content as always Keith!

I started playing guitar around age 11, took lessons for a year or so. I didn't know anything about guitars or gear. When I got tired of playing on my dad's way too big for me classical guitar, I got a Peavey T25 and a small Peavey solid state amp. A couple of years later, I was playing in the youth group band at church. With the money from my summer job after high school, I bought a new 1986 MIJ Fender strat and a 50 watt Kustom amp. The strat I bought because it was blue. I still didn't know anything about guitars or gear. In college, I played in a band and wrote a bunch of music with that rig, until the amp died. I then used various solid state amps, and an occasional chorus or flange pedal. The band broke up, and life got in the way of my music career. 30 years later I started getting back into music. I researched and tried a bunch of acoustic guitars, finally choosing a Martin DM15. It’s not as fancy as other models, but it sounds like a Martin. Then I had that blue strat re-fretted and looked for the right amp. I selected the 65 Fender Deluxe Reverb Reissue and built my first pedal board. I then started pondering what the ideal electric guitar for me would be. More research, more trying things at local guitar shops. Last week I bought an American Performer Telecaster. I’ll be honest, I absolutely plan to get more acoustic and electric guitars. However, I’m sure that no matter what else I bring home, the all Mahogany Martin, the DRRI, and the Telecaster will remain my primary instruments. I’ve had too little and I don’t want to experience too much. I think these three fit just right.

A few thoughts: 1) thanks for a thoughtful and well made video as usual! 2) surprise surprise, the new old hand-wired amp and high-end attenuator at more than 3 times the price of a Tonemaster, are what a discerning musician wants in his den, finances be damned! 3) Can there be a sequel with viable real-world alternatives, like the 68 Custom, which is hailed by many as being superior to even the 65 Reissue (and can be found with a pine cab and neo speaker to boot!) and also why not the frugal man's do-it-all Fender, the Hot Rod Deluxe IV? Or are the Tonemasters so good there is no need to even consider those? Keep up the great work!

A Twin Reverb with JBLs was my gigging amp for a good number of years. I bought it in a pawnshop when I was 18 and used it for about 20 years. I guess I’m a glutton for punishment but I went to EVM12Ls in it for a while which is why it ended up in a Showman cab with a separate 2x12. I’ve been looking for something smaller lately and the DR is one I’m looking at. The new Pro Reverb 68 Custom is another temping amp but it’s closer to a 6L6 Deluxe than a traditional PR.

At 7:20 I feel there's some confusion when you're describing the difference between the Tone Master amps and other (multiple-amp) modellers: It's not like the Tone Masters have more available "processing power" because they use a single model, it's like a PC only having Solitaire installed vs. PCs that have many more games installed. The models that are not running don't consume processing resources. Restricting the available tonal palette does have some advantages, like not having a small combo trying to sound like a stack. But they don't solve the inherent limitations of such amps, Fender are just offering less tools than the competition and saying you should be grateful for it. Which seems to be working for them.

Back in the 60's I played through a Deluxe Reverb with a 2-12 extension speaker and had no problem cutting through the mix. is a quality amp without breaking the bank for a tube amp. the solid state version - from what I have seen in demos, not so much.

the delux reverb.i have been playing 60 years but have never owned a delux. i think they are too small for live gigs. great for home or recording. i still use a twin reverb with 12L EVS. I simply like to have reserve power but on wheeles. A lighter rig i use is 2x roland cube 80.s a super flexable.rig. i find these amps can run at very low levels with good tone and i always use a boss ge7 graphic. I like your show. Tam in Australia.

Very interesting video. But every single A-B demo I've seen online of the Tone Master vs the actual tube version shows them to be extremely different, especially when under gain. Maybe all those demos were of the original version (modeled bright cap, Jensen, etc.). But the difference was astounding. Clean? There was a difference. But you could almost argue the Tone Master sounded better (I guess). As far as options for those wanting the whole hand-wired tube thing, but not wanting either the modern pricing or the vintage pricing and wear/tear, there are options. You can build your own! Either do a clone (several kits available online) or find something similar with mods. Allen Amplification offers all sorts of very, very clever implementations of classic Blackface Fender designs. Their Accomplice is based on a Deluxe Reverb, but with the following USEFUL features: elimination of one channel; added MID control, added RAW control (gradually bypasses tone stack); added Reverb TONE control; switchable bright cap, external bias, etc. The thing is the Deluxe Reverb that Fender should have built. If you can solder, it's half the price of the hand-wired Fenders shown in the video.

hello keith , an captor x will cost 550 euro's and an 65 reissue or handwired dr will cost me 1500 or 2500 euro , an behringer P1 is 55 euro ( for playing with headphones om a tm deluxe wich will cost 1000 euro ) , as an poor musician ( as usual ) this is an easy choice , let alone the weight difference and other perks off the tm dr's , happy to see though , you have also fallen in love with these's amps , for me it's also a new learning curve after playing way to many expensive handmade tube amps for over 40 years ( and they do sound great , i know ) , but for playing pub gigs in a blues/rock coverband these tm dr's are the answer : ) Keep up the great work you are doing , big fan off you're channel , greetings from Holland , Toon

Awesome video as always. The deluxe is one of the greatest family of amps ever designed. I need to find a tone master to try, but not sure if i would take the plunge. If fender is listening id love to have a firmware update that gives you the 68 custom settings as i do prefer that to a standard 65 drri for a one amp option.

I'm with you Keith on the headphone out BUT, it does seem if you put a headphone output on an amp it's automatically grouped in with cheaper "practice" amps. Like a "not a serious amp" badge.

I bought a used ‘65 Deluxe in 1968 for $100. The guys in my band had Fender Twins and made fun of my “little” Deluxe. In 1973 I got married, had a baby, and needed money, so I sold my Deluxe and couldn’t believe that I was lucky enough to get $100 - the same price I paid 5 years earlier. I have a Deluxe reissue now, but I would gladly give $100 to get my old amp back!

I have played almost any amp known to man except those boutique brands. Though it is very easy to get great sounds out of all tube amps, I can still have a great gig with solid state amps. Though a British combo amp is my most favorite of all, I wouldn't mind gigging with any amp as long as it is well made. A Japanese 120? Cool! A Fender modelling? No problemo! A workhorse Fender combo? Lovely! A British Stack? Oh yeah! Solid state, all tube, hybrid, digital modelling - I'll gig!

lol i just bought a 66' twin reverb and a 71' super reverb because i already own the 65' deluxe reverb reissue ..I also acquired a dolly cart....and now im thinking i should just bring the deluxe reverb reissue to every gig just incase i have an issue with one of the vintage amps...or bring both vintage fender amps and hope they dont both go down!!!it could happen..so maybe bring all 3 amps to every gig ..(needs some band type gigs first) . ha im interested in that pedal board power supply battery pack thing!! ibet you have a video for it already?

Keith...I’ve never owned a Deluxe Reverb of any kind as of yet. In terms of affordability, the ‘65 & ‘68 Reissues are in my wheelhouse. I’m intrigued by the Tonemaster version of the Deluxe Reverb too. As you noted, it’s 90% close to the tone of the various tube iterations of the classic amp and it has some nice modern features not available on the classic reissues. Is there really enough difference in the feel between the tube reissues and the Tonemaster that I’d end up kicking myself for getting the Tonemaster over one of the reissues? That’s my concern. You’ve ultimately addressed my concerns about the tone, especially with Fender making the Blonde Tonemaster’s firmware available for the original Tonemaster. I’m a speaker swapper from way back, so having to drop the Celestion Neo Creamback in the older version of the Tonemaster is not an issue. I’m ultimately concerned about the differences in feel between the tube and solid state versions. If the feel is also in that 90% or better with the Tonemaster as compared to the tube reissues, then I reckon there’s no longer an issue for me. That’s ultimately what I’m asking about.

Your video shows pictures of both 8ohm and 16ohm G12 NEO creamback speakers. After reviewing pictures on Sweetwater of the blonde as is being sold, it would seem the correct speaker to swap into a black model is the 8ohm. Is this correct?

Dear Keith, first thanks for content that has helped me spend “smarter”. That being said, I have been on the horns of the dilemma of whether to go full modeling with the stomp/power cab plus OR go tone master deluxe with my existing board. I think the weight has been the deciding factor. (10 pounds less for someone with “cool x-rays and great stories“ made that decision.) Thus, I’m VERY curious as to how you’re using the stomp in conjunction with the tone master. (Using any amp models in front of it? If so, please share your thoughts. Perhaps enough there to justify its own video? Inquiring minds n’all... ) As always, thanks for providing USEFUL data for real world applications. Phil Knoxville
