During production of Witness Underground documentary, we took a break between interviews and shooting, to have a former Jehovah's Witness meetup in Minneapolis. We ended up shooting these additional short interviews in the backyard during the event for the XJW Coming Out series as a bonus episode.
Three short interviews capture the diverse experiences of individuals who found the courage to question their upbringing in this "Apocalyptic cult" and, in doing so, discovered the strength to forge their own paths.
Listen to three former Witnesses, Jesse America, Erica Rae, and James Zimmerman who got out. They all describe what life was like inside, pressures they experienced, why they left, and their new world views.

I was a JW for 47 years. I left in 2019..it took me that long to get the strength and mental fortitude to walk away. I lost everything...my husband at the time said I had to leave the home if I turned my back on jehovah...my children who were jws turned away from me. So much sadness.....

@bmariefowler Out here away from the mind unsettling CONTROLL methods used by those geriatrics of the WTS (WARLOCK'S OR WICKED TOWER OF SINS) who claim to be annointed by Jehovah's Spirit, but not "INSPIRED" nor are they INFALLIBLE. You will find TRUE friends with UNCONDITIONAL LOVE. What interests do you have ?? Sewing ?? Knitting ?? Fishing ?? Camping ?? Hiking ?? There are so many activities to pursue where you will find real loving friends who will care for you. Finally, don't say THANKS at meal times as that will keep you attached to these false shepherds, wolves in sheep's clothing. Sit down and eat your meal. Have new found friends over for meals as this will help break the habit of giving thanks. Smile as you gave more TRUE friends out here reaching out to you.

Wow same here, a believer for 46 years and woke up 2019. The convention of that year drama cracked my heart and the final straw was in Nov. of that year, seeing CSA infos. I also had tough times with my jw husband. He also had said I got to leave but our only child was still in is early teen and not baptized yet so in some way I was able to stay. But am pimo and on zooms, not showing myself though. I hope you are doing fine, please stay strong!

I am 74, My husband was an Elder and PO, We were in the cult for 40 years. After the ordeal that led to our leaving was over (and btw we were never disfellowshipped, they were hoping we'd come back), we would wake up in the mornings and feel so free, we would say WOW. Yeah it was difficult for our son who had to face those people, but he loves us. His wife's family is still hard core so it has been difficult for some years for them to sort it all out. They have over the years 'fallin away'. All is good now.

Amazing! Happy for all of you. My family is deeply divided still, extremely stubborn and refuse to communicate on any topic. When I have confronted them over the years three family members confessed to me privately that if evolution was true it would dissolve their faith. To make that statement yet not do any research is incredible to me. 15 years of those thoughts and to continue to make the decision every couple of days to keep up appearances and deny yourself the Google search that could end the cognitive dissonance. I couldn't live like that any more. I was always looking for truth.

Ex JW here. Third generation, daughter of an elder. Left in my 40s, am now in my 50s. Agreed: happiest I've ever been n yes - having had the ability to separate from the familiar ( and often, your biological family) does speak volumes about a person. You are all brave and beautiful people. Thank you for sharing your perspectives. It's an odd feeling, isn't it?... for a long time, you feel as if you don't fit with the JWs but you are also awkward in The World (isn't it hard to banish the Witness-speak?). That's all fine and dandy that you left the organization but don't you dare forget who God truly is. Sure the organization is screwed up as most churches are. All are filled with corruption and lies, deceptions, and doctrines. But they did know who God was and they had it right about who Jesus was. Except that Michael business. @isaiah30v8 Isn't Isaiah just one of the Best writers of the Bible. I absolutely love his writings. He tells sooo much and puts soo much perspective on things. For instance, those that say Jesus is Jehovah, lol! That's impossible because at Isaiah 60:16 Were told "They will certainly have to know that I am (I'm gonna use the KJB here too) the LORD your Savior and the powerful one of Jacob is your repurchaser. The reason I used their Bible is to show that even their Bible tells them that there is two separate individuals being talked about here. And that completely lines up with Jude 25 too. And I love to straighten out those that say Isaiah 10:21 is Jehovah when it's actually Jesus that's being talked about. Lol! Because when they say that I show them both Isaiah 60:16 and Luke 1:32,33. I usually don't hear back from them. Lol!

WOW! You are like me, I was a born in as well. I left when I was 58, now 65. I still believe in God, actually to the point of knowing there is, that’s how strong I believe now. I know of others who have left and are now atheist which is very understanding knowing other religions are baloney like the borg. They have basically thrown the baby out with the dirty bath water type thing going on. My faith is actually stronger and I’m actually more spiritual now, and things make more sense now. Keep your spirituality, God is real. And he is love, that’s why we should be also. 😊👍👍👍

The lady with the red hair. she is on a path to be coming spiritually enlightened. After being brainwashed in a religion for many many years, it took me time to feel comfortable talking about things that i would've condemned before. WHO IS OVER ALL? Ephesians 4:6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. GOD and FATHER is OVER/ABOVE ALL and that "All" includes the SON so they are NOT EQUAL THE BIBLE teaches that Jesus was MADE As Lord and Christ and as Son (ACTS 2:36, Prov 8, HEB 1:5), CREATED/PRODUCED/INSTALLED (Prov 8) , COME INTO BEING/MADE (Mat 21:42 - egeneto) and GIVEN LIFE by the Father - John 5:26 and it uses TODAY (Heb 1:5), and uses future tenses and is a prophecy in Isa 9:6 (Isa 9:6, - WILL BE) . If you are called MADE AND CREATED AND GIVEN LIFE, and NEVER CALLED in the BIBLE as Creator or Maker , then you are A CREATION. ALL FROM THE BIBLE From the Lord was this (this is referring to the chief cornerstone who is Jesus) , the word WAS is egeneto (made or came into being) - Matthew 21:42 and the exact Greek word used in John 1:3 - MADE, egeneto (came into being) - JESUS WAS MADE/CAME INTO BEING FROM THE FATHER , yes, Jesus was MADE/CREATED!, See also Acts 2:36, Heb 1:5, 1 john 5 Isa 9:6 the word Prince in the Prince of Peace means PATRON ANGEL also Leader. WHO IS the ONE LEADER that we have? Jesus. Now, that same exact Hebrew word was used for Daniel 12:1 which is used for Michael the Archangel. So are you saying there are MANY LEADERS now?

@@Mr.DC3.1914 You can't just hit peoplewith bible verses - well, certainly not with me. You'd first have to convince me that I had any reason to care what the Bible says. I recently was contacted by a JW in my town through email. She attempted to convince me, but she could only answer me with JW publication quotes and not really explain why she was personally convinced. Why should I trust the Watchtower or any other group that claims it reveals eternal mysteries?

​@@Mr.DC3.1914 Maybe so, but many groups and many people can claim the same thing. Take an HONEST look at people around you who are not JWs. Many are happy and healthy and good-hearted. The church doesn't have a corner on the "good people" market. I'll let you in on a sort of secret - Many religions (including the groups I was in) will frighten you by highlighting all the perceived problems that "worldy" people have while ignoring or dismissing their virtues...and then they do the exact opposite when they talk about the brethren - only looking at how amazing and happy they all (apparently) are. I figured out that I was trained to keep myself in that kind of isolated thinking, but eventually I came to come to grips with the fact that it is BS, for lack of a better term.

@@franciskhoury4288 Only JWs teach about Jehovah God and his Son, Jesus as Salvation and they follow Jesus' command to preach the good news and that GOD is not a torturer and we teach about GOD's Kingdom. We also have the faithful slave that provide food from the Bible globally for the Master's household. All the others teach that the slaves of Christ are just imaginary fake people. Phil 1:1

I love this so much - every word. Thank you for posting - there are so many of us. Intellectually I think many of us understand that we are not alone in what can feel like an isolating and bizarre life experience - but it feels good to hear these words that echo so many of my own feelings. My favorite thing was when the gentleman addressed the question about whether or not we are happier now and asked “are you happier drunk or sober?” What a great way to look at this! Of course many people are happier living in that positive delusion, but once you wake up, the lies simply can’t make you happy anymore.

At the end of the day, its whatever floats your boat. Being a JW is definitely NOT for everyone. It does take a certain mentality to go with the JW flow. As a JW myself of some 35 yrs, though faded, the thing i have noticed pretty much as long as i was in is that the JWs rely too much on what the leadership say. For instance, if you "see someone" doing a "sin" you are supposed to tell them to self report otherwise you will "have to" report it to the elders. For me, that was bullshit. Unless someone committed a very serious criminal offence like murder that I witnessed which then of course I would report to police, other than that what they do is their own affair. Also, i always maintained my friends " in the world" and had a social life outside "the truth" . To be honest and IMHO, , if you had to rely solely on "the congregation" for socializing , it would be a lonely experience.

I really enjoyed this compilation of interviews, the video had a certain mood that was almost soothing. I woke up a couple years ago. Raised in it & believed it to be "the truth" completely. Yet I struggled with depression & low self worth the entire time. Never felt like it was the "best life ever" to me(turns out it's not). I walked away years ago. I had only been " in" about six years. I'm not angry with them, I feel like it was a door of learning that I needed to walk through to get to where I am now. If there was a mistake, it was mine, for basing my decision on feelings instead of real, vetted knowledge of exactly what I was taking on. It became very clear to me after the " honeymoon was over", that I acted way too impulsively. That being said, I only have one other family member who is a witness, so I didn't experience the repercussions that so many others have, and that family member still freely associates with me, we just keep spiritual matters to ourselves. I've long since adopted the personal policy that my spirituality, soul, loyalty, are of immense value, and that if I ever decide to give that away, be it to a deity, person, organization, or any type of doctrine I want full disclosure. I want the good, bad, ugly to be completely obvious before I ever make that decision again. Great video. Much love.

@@bananaislandfilms I'm not looking to be interviewed or anything. I'm actually not an ex JW myself. But my grandmother was one and that was the congregation she was in. So, naturally, I'm curious if maybe one of her old friends or their kids might turn up online somewhere, in one of these Ex JW things. My grandmother was in the religion, but my grandfather, who she was happily married to the whole time, never got into it. My mom and uncle never got into it either, even though she had converted when they were kids and tried the best she could to get them in. Interestingly enough, she never shunned anyone, though and we had a good relationship. And they never disciplined her in any way, over the years, even though she blatantly broke many of the rules, the most noteworthy of which, was letting us put up a Christmas tree and celebrate it in her house, the year we had to live with her when my dad had lost his job. She would also give us money for birthdays and Christmas and she openly participated in my mom's Catholic church wedding in the 80's. So I don't get what the deal is, with the whole disfellowshipping thing. She died in 2019, after many years of slowly fading because she had dementia and couldn't go to the meetings and eventually kind of forgot about them and my mom kind of encouraged that. This was around the mid 2000's. Did they change their rules or get more strict or something, in the past 20 years? Or were they always that strict about the whole shunning thing and my grandmother's congregation just never got the message for some reason?

@@Melissa0774 It depends a bit on how the congregation is resp. if there are people that report on her to the elders. The grandmother would have gotten a talking to for the christmas tree, and presents, or if she continued to have contact with shunned ex members - but if no other JW saw it or they saw it but did not report it, for instance if they were very close - then she never got into trouble. The grandmother could not convert the children - they cannot get baptized until they have a age where they can make reasonable desicions. (of course she would take them to the meetings, and teach them, etc.) I think most dedictated JW parents will get a bit nervous if their teenage kids get 14 / 15 and do not show any intention to get baptized. Resp. dedicated JW parents will also hold study at home, pray etc. and will nudge their teenagers, what they are waiting for. IF a person never gets baptized they are also not shunned if the start smoking, have ex-marital sex, declare they want to leave etc. Sure they are not seen as good companty BUT if they are close to "faithful" JWs there is not that pressure on the JW's that they MUST shun them. Friends would likely distance themselves, but relationships to relatives might remain intact (albeit strained. For a faithful JW it is terrible that you would leave, they think you are condemned. I heard the phrase: If this young woman has children she will give birth to children that are destined to die .... ) I had contact with JWs as teenager / young adult, I know a lot of the teachings. I know of one JW that finally divorced her abusive spouse that was an alcoholic - he got violent when he had drunk (she had joined when she was the wife of that man, and had already 4 kids with him). Not sure, maybe she got HIM to file for divorce (in exchange for not reporting him to the police maybe) so she would not get into trouble with the religion. And she was not even interested in having another man, so no problem with her having exmarital sex. It is not likely that her alcoholic ex lived celibate, so I guess sooner or later he would technically violate the convenant of marriage by having sex with another woman (even better when he filed in the first place). Plus that people in the congregation saw how much better she did once they were separated. Plust that was a small, close-knit congregation, very rural - so it is possible they took some liberties, that they made concessions in some cases. On the other hand I know people that were excluded by the same congregation for starting to smoke. (and heard another JW that used to be friends with those persons that she continued to have some contact. Of course also to nudge them to return. She said: I see it a little bit different than the official standpoint) .... Behind the mountains they did their own thing (at a limited scope ... sometimes).

The only time being a stubborn asshole is good is when people are trying to brainwash you. I'm glad I'm a stubborn asshole for the very fact that I left the cult at an early age because I knew it was just all BS. I have anxiety issues that most likely carried over from when I was a kid forced into the cult. Constantly feeling like I was having to watch over my back and like nothing was private. So if anyone reading this is having trouble leaving making a decision or figuring out where to go try being a stubborn asshole. It might be hard at first to break it ro your family but ultimately you have to be happy because it's your life. Even if you're going to be part of religion or serve a god, you still have to have self-fulfillment. Definitely won't get that in this cult, at least not me anyway.

I was born into the cult by a mother who converted with her mother (my grandmother) almost immediately after my grandfather committed suicide in the mid 1950s. I believe that the selling point for their conversion was the “resurrection” and possible future “paradise on earth” myths. Fortunately, my father, who was college educated, never converted and made it easier for me to leave after I graduated from college! I later converted (returned תשובה )to Judaism (my ancestral faith), but feel comfortable with my skepticism while still able to enjoy fellowship with other Jews! God has put into the heart of man the knowledge of good and evil. Some of the best advice I was given if you are serious about finding the truth, is to read the gospels for your self and rely on the Holy spirit that leads you and guides you into all truth. Not going to any religious organisation. Ex Roman catholic where they teach that when you are baptised you are born again, and the JWS that only 144,000 are born again, whereas Jn 3 v 3 says that all must be born again. Also as you read if something makes simple sense seek no other sense. Then find a true bible believing church which I know in these days are difficult as there is a great falling away.

Congratulations to these three, and all who have found their way out of this false religious system. I believe there is a God who created all things, but He will not be found or known through the Watchtower's teachings. God is found in His natural revelation, which is the designs we find in nature itself. And He is found in the words of Bible (not the perverted New World Translation). I would encourage ex-JWs that want to find the real truths of the Bible to just read it by itself with a fresh perspective. Let it speak for itself and it will reveal itself. The best commentary on the Bible is the Bible itself. You will find that it reveals itself far differently than the Watchtower's interpretations.

I was taught to hate the world, what's in it and not participate in parties as long as it's worldly. BORING life. I see all you ExJW's here. And im here to tell you all. That I dont care that you left the organization. Screw them!! But there is one thing that I want you to know. If you've left and gone to start worshipping Jesus, then you truly have turned your backs on Jehovah. And if you learned anything in the time you were with thr JW'S then you should know that there are two separate beings that are talked about in the Bible. One is God Almighty and the other is his Son. Again i don't give a damn about the organization or the watchtower but. I do care about Jehovah, as should you too. They maybe a screwed organization but there is one thing they got right and that's who God is and who his Son is. If you care to discuss that matter, feel free to come and talk with me.

There is an entire pantheon of Cannanite and isrealite gods in the old testament. They just hid them with names like lightening and thunder, and titles like most high, lord, lord god, etc. there's isn't just one god in the bible. It's all myth

@WitnessUnderground That's not what the Bible says. And I have 5 different translations of the Bible, not just one. And I have 5 straight years of extensive reading because I was locked up in prison for 5 years, and all I did was read, study, and compare my different translations of the Bible. The Bible says there is ONE God, The Father at 1 Corinthians 8:5,6, not multiple gods. So I don't know where you get your information from, and I don’t even care because you're just a man, and I don't listen to men. I listen to what the Bible says, and in you think that there's multiple God's, then that's on you.

@WitnessUnderground And I've never heard that there were a pantheon of God's from the Israelites and even if there were, they ain't God Almighty, they're Pagan gods and I don't care about Pagan gods. It is true that the pagans and the Israelites had close ties to each other, but again, I don't care about pagans gods, and I don't believe in them. If you do, please feel free to believe in them. That's on you, not me.

@WitnessUnderground So you don't believe in YHWH?? Who is also known as Jehovah/Yahweh/Yod-He-Waw-He/Yehovah/Yehowah. I personally believe that it's Yehowah because of the YHWH and all those Kings in 2nd Kings and Chronicles their names all start with Yeho. Like Yehosaphat and Yehokim and Yehochin and Yehoram and Yehoahaz, all those Kings names mean something about God. Like Yehosaphat's name means Yehowah is my judge or Yehowah judged. And all of them mean something like that. I have them written down buried in my paperwork. I particularly don't feel like digging them out, but if you want to know I'll see if I can find them. Or if you have a full Strongs concordance, you can find them there too. So I'm confused about what you believe in. You don't believe in Jehovah as God so what do you believe in?? And if you don't believe in Jehovah as God then why did you come here and upload a video trying to tear down JW'S. Not that I care, because I'm not one. But I still find it hard to believe that someone has a hatred towards what someone else believes in

Satan is the only sane character in the mythology of heaven in the bible. God uses violence to attempt to solve every problem. Not exactly a role model or deserving of any respect. You can write your own 10 commandments that are superior to the bible on about 20 minutes. Highly recommend the effort. It's telling

Exjws or whatever go form your own church and stop disturbing people on the net. Or were you people blindfolded to become a Jehovah's witness? From experience l knew it is a well informed decision because nobody becomes a jw overnight, you did your study you were convinced, even b4 your baptism you were asked 2 very important questions. So why all these noise allover the place?

Whom are they disturbing? I left Catholicism after being 100% devoted to the faith for a number of years, and I find it extremely interesting to hear other people's de-conversion stories. Lots of parallels... I'd also like to suggest to you that not all people who join religions (including JW) do so as a well-informed decision; rather, they are heavily influenced by some kind of coercion like family pressure, communal pressure, indoctrinated fears, and probably other things. Critical thinking seems to be what brings people out of these religious groups despite being forced to be shunned by from family and friends to do it. Some of this applied to me.
