😂 That 1980s West Germany side were unbelievable, weren't they? No matter how far behind they went in big, knockout tournament matches, they were absolute masters of somehow clawing their way back into games, and winning them. You could never, ever write them off... 😂

They were 2 matches away from winning 3 world cups in a row, which obviously hasn’t ever been done. Made it to 3 World Cup finals, a feat only matched by Brazil (1994-2002). If bernd schuster hadn’t left the national team in a huff in ‘84, I think Germany might have won in ‘86. In the mid 80s, he was the 3rd best playmaker, only behind Maradona and Platini.

This is the first time in my life (been watching football since the 1990s) that Germany have been 'bad' (even though things are looking up now under Nagelsmann). But for most of my lifetime, it didn't matter if they had two blithering idiots at centre-back, or a striker with all the grace of a dump truck, as long as they was still time in the game, they always had a chance of coming back. Seriously frustrating and impressive in equal measure.

There was a stack of Germans plying their trade in Italy in the 80's & 90's. off the top of my head: Inter: Hansi Mueller, Rummenigge, Matthaeus, Brehme, Klinsmann, Sammer Juve: Moeller, Kohler, Reuter, Haessler Roma: Voeller, Haessler, Berthold Lazio: Riedle, Doll Fiorentina: Effenberg, Heinrich Milan: Bierhoff, Heinrich, Ziege, Lehmann Udinese: Bierhoff

Old Germans are underrated, partly due to the thuggish antics of Harald Schumacher

Lothar Matthäus had the best season of his whole career. His 21-year career. He won everything except the European cup / championship league.

Even though he came closest in 1987 and ‘99 with Bayern, that Inter team was probably the best club team he ever played with

@@chriscolton6329Liverpool hired 4 amazing managers in a row - shanks, paisley, fagan and dalglish. Unprecedented dominance across decades. Then they had to follow those 4 with… Souness. A hell of a player though. Amazing leader and a hard worker.

Lack of European football for those 6 years (‘85-91) really took it out of Liverpool. It took them years to get anywhere close to their old dominance.

Is Maradona’s Napoli coming up? Or Hellas Verona’s scuddetto in 1980s?

10:58 if you think lothar matthaus is the greatest German player of all time, you automatically lose all credibility. Beckenbauer is legit one of the top 5-6 players of all time. Gerd Muller scored a goal a game for club and country for a decade and a half. Scored 10 goals in a single World Cup. One of only two players ever to score more goals than games played in for the natl team. They led Bayern to back-to-back-to-back CL wins. I bet Jurgen Klinsmann is in your top 3. Throw in Ozil for good measure too, right? This is an embarrassing opinion.

Lothar Matthäus is also in my opinion the greatest German player of all time....that I got to see with my own eyes. He was and remains the best. So....to hell with your goofy opinion.
@WhatIfFootball34177 күн бұрын
Note I said “one of”. In my opinion he won’t ever come close to Beckenbauer, note also that I said “since Beckenbauer”. As a footballer Matthaus was better than Gerd Muller but of course Muller was such a phenomenal goalscorer that he’s remembered better. Try using your ears before coming out with such a sensationalist, gatekeeping and purposefully toxic response.

Lothar Matthaus made me fall in love with football and support Germany. Inter is still my Italian team until this day. He is the greatest German footballer for me and I will die with that opinion, suck it up!
