This one is in the same heartwrenching level than the 1998 WRC final round title in England (Mäkinen vs Sainz, Mitsubishi vs Toyota). For people who didnt know this one. Makinen was the champion of 96 and 97, Sainz 90 and 92. The race had several stages in 3 days and Makinen had more points than Sainz, basically whoever finish ahead of the other (in the top 6) will be the champion. In the 1st day Makinen had an accident and couldnt continue. Sainz just needed to finish in top 4. Last day, last stage Sainz was 3rd without taking any risks. 400m AWAY from the last stage finish line the engine exploded (I still remember Carlos Moya co-driver words "trata de arrancarlo Carlos, por Dios trata de arrancarlo!" (try to fire it up Carlos, for God-sake! try!). They were so dissapointed that Moya smashed the back window his his helmet, the team manager pick them up in the team helicopter. In the meantime Makinen was back at home in Finland giving an interview when he received a cellphone and told him "Sainz did not finish!" he said something like "you are not kidding me", etc The videos below: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mF65Z52hp7V8abc

I watched the entire race, all 24 hours of it, while during the F1 race, I had to plug in a second TV, just so I can watch both events (something I'm about to do this weekend also). After that weekend I slept for 2 days. Le Mans was a heartbreak, not because I'm a big Toyota fan, but because I just wanted the VW domination to be over. To this day this has been one of the most enjoyable motor racing weekends of my life. Even better than the few GP weekends that I actually watched at few of the European tracks. The 2012 race was another heartbreak, when Anthony Davidson had that airborne crash at the end of the Mulsanne straight. The Toyotas had a chance of winning that race too. Although I've been watching F1 ever since I was 6 or 7, which would make that 30+ years of F1, I still consider Le Mans the best race ever and I enjoy it like no other. Every year I make plans of visiting it, and every-time something comes up, I just hope one of these days I can spend the week at Le Mans, watching the race at the track.

I was working down there in 2016. I was manning the gate to a campsite and with about 5 minutes to go, the marshals opposite our site let me and a few of my colleagues come up to the marshal post on the exit of the Porsche Curves. I had my earpiece to tune into Radio Le Mans just as the carnage was unfolding and saw the lead Toyota practically crawl by. About 20 seconds later, the Porsche flew by and took the lead at the start/finish line. As it did, I began to sprint back to the campsite to see the final lap on TV. It still remains the craziest finish to a motor race I've seen in person.

Ya know speaking of 2017 Le Mans, something that I keep hearing brought up every once in a while is a reason why DPI even became a thing and that’s because there was something that was worked out between I think the FIA, ACO, and IMSA that the top Daytona Prototype category would switch to a LMP2 concept of car leading to the current Daytona Prototype International we know now to try to get prototypes from IMSA to run at Le Mans but it never went through. Each time I think about it it makes me wonder if it actually went through and DPI were allowed to run at Le Mans with its LMP1 and LMP2 counterparts (saying that since DPI if anything is kinda a in between prototype of LMP1 and LMP2 since it was a P2 chassis with manufacturers open to do whatever to the car as long as it met LMP2 requirements) a DPI car, probably most notably the Cadillac could have most likely won Le Mans which is something crazy to think about.

If I remember correctly, Ford brass ordered a side by side 1-2-3 finish in 1966. Problem was that the rules stated the Le Mans winner was the car that covered the greatest distance in 24 hours not necessarily the one with the most laps crossing the finish line 1st. In '66 one of the other 2 GT40s had the same number of laps but due to the "Le Mans" start in use the winner started many yards further back from the start/finish line and crossed the finish line only a few feet behind the 1st to cross the line.

It should be mentioned some of the history Toyota had at Le Mans - in 1994, they were leading with 90 min left to go, then suffered mechanical trouble. In 1998, Toyota was in second place going into the final hour - but closing down the leading Porsche, and looking good for the win until a late mechanical problem took them out. In 1999, Toyota was again second place going into the final hour - probably was not going to catch the leading BMW - but it was looking like it was going to be close until late puncture dropped the car back. So, 2016 really was "oh no, not again!"

After losing one of their trio early on they hold onto the lead through the night and with 2 hrs left the leading Peugeot dies to and alternator failure. That's would be okay because the last Peugeot is right be there to take the lead. As we go into the last hour like clockwork the last Peugeot blows up its engine due to conrod failure, leaving the north american Audi team to snatch victory as the race comes to a close.

This isn’t the first time Toyota suffered heartbreak in the dying moments. In 1998 Carlos Sainz Sr drove for Toyota in the wrc and was on course to win the championship in the final round in GB after makinen crashed out early. However in arguably the cruelest twist of faith ever, the engine in his Corolla died less that 500 metres from the end of the final stage of the rally. It was so heartbreaking that Luis Moyà who was the co driver for Carlos threw his helmet there the back window of the Corolla in sheer devastation. This to me ranks up there with Toyota in 2016 in Le Mans, massas heartbreak in 2008 and Abu Dhabi 2021 in the most dramatic endings in a motorsport race or season.

Out of topic but perhaps of interest - re use of images: I see a lot of channels thriving solely on using copyrighted images and videos most of which don't seem that big to be able to afford paying for those images and videos and doesn't seem to have much of a problem either other than the occasional deletion of their content (which they then re-edit and re-upload). For instance (about motorsports) there is Josh Revell a New Zealander who does something similar to you but using what it feels like whatever images and videos he likes. He even got sponsors (and apparently a somewhat recent partnership with another channel) and never mentioned any issues with copyright. Then there's Minty (10 things about this or that movie) that uses heaps of videos from said movies and the only occasional penalty would be to have his video deleted, re-edited and re-uploaded. He is one of the very few to not have sponsors nor patreon or anything of the sort. Anyway have you tried messaging some of these people to ask how can they get away with it? I mean perhaps the copyright laws in the Land Down Under are less strict or whatever but the only thing you would be spending by asking is a few minutes of your time (and could very much be a copy/paste message to any one of them). I dunno... I would at least ask... might get you some pointers or at the very least a different perspective - and who knows, might even end up in some colab video with Josh for instance. Perhaps worth giving it a shot..?

I'm still a little confused as to why the #5 car was unclassified. It completed 383 laps, which should have given it second place. The fact it took over 11 minutes to complete that final lap should be irrelevant. Yes I do know that there was a rule change to avoid cars waiting in the pits for hours and then completing a final lap to be classified but this doesn't apply here If we take the 1999 Brazilian GP as another example. Frentzen retired on the final lap because he was out of fuel, but was allowed to keep 3rd place because he was the last unlapped runner, and was on the final lap
@fuzzy1dk2 жыл бұрын
the rule that you have to finish the last lap in less than 6 minutes (in a ddition to doing +50% distance after 75% of the race) was for safety, at the end of the race drivers with wounded cars would come out of the pit and stop near the finish line waiting for the leader to cross the line

Kamuii Kobayashi could have taken the win, pitted under SC, stopped at the end of the pit lane at the red light, pulled away to go and stopped again before pulling away once more. The reason he stopped? His mate was giving him a cheer on from the garages and he was mistaken by Kamuii to be a marshal giving instruction. Half a lap later the car was dead. The Toyota could not do more than 2 standing starts in the space of 5 minutes and the clutch overheated ending their race...... A DNF because your buddy says hi.....
