Three Shires Head | Peak District | Short Hikes | Wild Swimming | Waterfalls | Must See Spots

Three shires head is a gorgeous place to sit with a picnic, swim or just for walking through on a longer hike. The river Dane, although very clear on this visit, it does get an orange tinge to it after heavy rainfall (I think its the peat) I would definitely recommend this walk / swim if you've never been but if you are wanting to swim, I would suggest taking water shoes as the river bed is really quite rocky. Lud's church is only a short walk away from here too if you wanted to make a day of it.
I parked in the lay-by on the A54 by the farm track but there are many places to park locally and google maps will be your best friend for this.

Yep supposed to be sunny here too today and the hottest day of the year, yet I was wearing a hoody, as we have not only not seen the sun, it's dam chilly too. Looked a nice walk down to the water falls and a real idyllic spot too. Nice place to have a dip and aww, I now see where the sun actually is, yes, perfect end for you, cheers Alan

I plotted a route up Shutlingsloe from Wildboarclough and around to Three Shires Head. Then I heard it was mobbed at half term. You must have been there early. I bet it was cold. Thanks for sharing Char.

Such a small pool along the way is really a gift 😊Swimming trunks, water shoes and a small towel are now always in my backpack 🎒when I go hiking. The area is so beautiful and so far. You live in a paradise. Thank you for sharing the video👍🏻

we live about a 30 min drive away from this waterfall and its lovely for a mid week wild swim in summer weve spend allday up there sunbathing swimming n picnic. but go at a wknd and its has busy has a theme park usually a younger crowd groups of older teens drinking swearing n generally acting the goat . and be careful jumping in off rocks the depth of the water can change and weve seen the air ambulance at this site a few times.

I would never jump off the rocks here, it’s too shallow and very uneven under foot. Yes it gets busy at prime time but doesn’t everywhere worth visiting. Have to time it well if you don’t want the crowds.

Ahhhh big Dave .. very kind, but whenever I’m on my own I always make sure I can touch the riverbed if I don’t know the swimming spot that well.. I like to think I’m quite clued up on safety.. even if it doesn’t always come across as that 😇
