I do want to say that I greatly appreciate you referring to your first cleansing method as smoke cleansing instead of smudging and showing that other herbs work in place of using just sage. I’m a Native American woman and smudging is a closed practice and white sage (one of our sacred medicines) is quickly going extinct. So I thank you for your choice of words and advice in this regard.
@claireheaslip49474 жыл бұрын
Sidra, I love this comment; I read it yesterday and I had to come back to you to ask about the differences between smoke cleansing (which is something I do daily in my home) and smudging. And why the later is a closed practice? Do you have any guidance on this or links you could share please?
@TwilightKimvideos4 жыл бұрын
Claire Heaslip I just wanted to give a reply just in case. I’m open for further explanation, but I thought I would share the general information I’ve been taught here and there. Smoke cleansing is a more general practice of using smoke as a method of cleansing/purifying a space. Smoke cleansing has been used in numerous cultures around the world. For example, it is tradition for farmers to run their cattle between or around bonfires to cleanse them and keep them safe. Smudging is a specific practice that is unique and sacred to Native Americans. The practice likely varies slightly between tribes and their traditions. Smudging not only includes the ceremony of burning the herbs, most namely white sage, but also a special way of growing their herbs and harvesting them respectfully and sustainably to ensure the plants health. Even the creation of a smudge stick/ bundle can be it’s own special ceremony. There may be other sacred rites included as well along the way. The act of smudging is considered a closed practice as it is sacred to a specific culture and has many specific traditions/rituals that coincide with it. Even if we try to honor these rituals of smudging from growing herbs to burning them, we likely aren’t going to do so anywhere close to what is taught in each tribe’s tradition and therefore shouldn’t call our smoke cleansing practice smudging.
@sersastark4 жыл бұрын
@@TwilightKimvideos hopping on to your comment, im a witch archaeologist and scientist trained in anthropology. Smudging is definitely a closed practice due to the ingredients used, how their harvested/gathered, how they're assembled, and the 5 W's of their usage (spiritual cleansing & protection, Spirit journey such as greeting ancestors/ancestral guides, birth and death ceremonies, life milestones, and protection for battle, to name a few). You can use cleansing sprays, incense, or candle warmers/melters that melt the candle the same way but without the fire and you still receive the cleansing/appropriate aroma and need. 🤙🏾
@andromeda09444 жыл бұрын
I've only knew about this, literally, just the other day. Just a question though, I was gifted a white sage stick and a dream catcher, any tips on what to do with it because I do not want to appropriate such a close practice. Thank you so much!
@sidrabrill53914 жыл бұрын
@@claireheaslip4947 Hi! I only just saw this. The difference is because in a close practice you have to be initiated or born into. And in order to have the right spiritual connection in order to be smudging properly, you need to be Native American. I really only have my personal experience as a Native American. It’s more about using the right term and the right herbs, so as long as you say smoke cleansing and use other versions of sage besides white sage, you would be clear of appropriating native culture.

FOR THE SPRAY use half water (I use moon water) and half vodka (which has no smell) so the alcohol will take longer to evaporate, therefore the smell lasts longer / you don't need to spray as much to get a strong smell. ♥ I personally don't drink so I use a miniature (the small bottle, around 2$).

Tiny suggestion for the spray; boil the water first so it doesn't get funky. The essential oils do help with that too. Lovely video, so beautifully done. I agree with some of the other fans, would love to see your gardens.

I live in Japan and can't get many ingredients and I'm still learning how to grow my own, so my floor wash is moon water, bay leaves and dry rosemary. Really quick but I've really grown to loooove the smell of bay leaves so I use them alot (including ritual baths). And I can get them at my local market easily and cheaply!! (Most herbs here are really expensive)

I wanted to say I really like your videos! I also wanted to add that white sage that's commonly used to cleanse spaces should be bought from a proper seller, or replaced altogether, because there's a huge problem with people destroying sage bushes to make and sell bundles outside of proper Indigenous growers and sellers. I recommend using alternatives like, as you stated in the description, rosemary and thyme. It's becoming more of a problem to meet demands, which is also hard for Indigenous people who need it for sacred rites. It's creating a huge impact on the environment where it's needed to grow as well.

you could look into local plant guides to find plants that are home in you country or region. You can find herbs that were and still are used for cleansing. Most if not all cultures have specific folk magic traditions and practices which use material that is native and available :)
@theoran79684 жыл бұрын
I don't think she would know those herbs, because she lives in North America. You may have some luck looking into Buddhist incense. I'd imagine traditionally those were made with materials originally found in Asia.

hey! i'm from asia (south asia to be precise) and i use basil and bay leaf mostly. it's pretty popular in our culture here and i'm guessing it's available in abundance in other regions as well. basil is considered a very holy plant in many cultures and it helps health wise and also has magical properties like protection, purification and warding. bay leaf helps in purification and cleasing. if possible and available at your place, you can use dry coconut shells as well. burning them removes negative energies, however it's not the best if one has a respiratory problem.

Hello. I am a practitioner of feng shui and TCM Doctor. Typically you can find sage bundles but you can use chinese mugwort bundles or cigars ( there are other species that may work I'm just most familiar with Chinese) . It works well to purify and can enhance dreams but as many say do not leave a void fill it with other energies after. You could try burning Angelica root too dang gui it can be good for these purposes as well. Good luck.

So I bring this question because I want to understand what it means or what it's trying to tell me.. As soon as I became aware of how many times it's appeared it makes me a bit nervous or curious as to why.. SO here lately I've been seeing a lot of stars & cosmos everywhere these past few months. It goes as far back as Easter. These are the examples of what I mean: 1.During Easter we painted eggs with the children. Everyone painted their own individual egg their own way. Looking back now I realize I painted my egg for some reason as a galaxy. All black with stars, glitter, dust & colors.. I don't know why I did but it just happened that way at that moment. 2.I've been listening to a new artist who's lyrics mention a range of references to the cosmos & the universe in their songs. Some examples of the lines in their lyrics are, "Stephan's Quintet" or "through space & through time" or "align our bodies with the sky" in one song they say "Saturn" etc. The list goes on.. 3. I've also watched a series within these months where the main character tells (or reveals to) his spouse that his parents (who have died) were astrologers & are waiting for him on a Nebula. Once the boy dies his spouse says he'll stop at nothing to find him again in the stars. 4. A week later I'm watching a forensic show where the killer was carving (of all things) a Star into his victims. 5. One day while at work we're talking about the American flag and the amount of stars it has.. there was a lot of back and forth between my coworkers about it to the point where it slowed down our productivity... I stood back and realized it was a big distracting discussion over Stars. I know this sounds weird or like I'm speaking it into existence but I honestly just became aware of this repeating pattern... I know it can't just be a coincidence, can it?

This is a wonderful video, and I found it really helpful. Thank you so much for posting it. I have a question for you, if you don't mind. As a green/kitchen witch myself, I've always tried to do everything I can to tailor my lifestyle to be as kind to the earth as possible. (Recycling, reusing, growing things that aren't disruptive to natural environment, using products that aren't toxic to local flora/fauna, etc.) But as is becoming increasingly clear, not everyone has/does, and climate change is a horrifyingly inevitable thing at this point. It causes me a lot of pain and fear to think about it. (And anger, honestly, at people being willfully ignorant on the subject.) How do you make peace with this reality despite a healthy Nature being so integral to green witchcraft?
