Some great advice! As a graduate in animal training, behaviour and welfare I can add a bit more information to what you already said to those interested. Using treats is great for a dog that is food-motivated. It is important to find what motivates your dog - whether that is food, play or a toy. The reward must be of high value to them too other wise they may not want to listen to you. For example, rewarding your dog with a piece of kibble over a piece of real meat won't cut it - real meat is far more valuable than kibble. Clickers are a useful tool. As you said it removes the lag between the desired behaviour and the reward. In scientific terms, the clicker acts as a "marker" for the correct behaviour to tell your dog that they've done the right thing. This helps make learning so much quicker, especially when they form the association that clicker noise means treats. Hand-signals are so important. Research has shown that when given the option, dogs are more likely to follow a hand-signal than a vocal command. Similarly, research has shown that dogs trained with both vocal commands and associated hand-signals have much higher levels of obedience than those with just one of the two. Obedience classes are also a good recommendation. They help socialise your dog and you get training tips in the process. Like you said, only use reward-based trainers only and also reputable people. And as an extra, avoid using aversive methods of training and aversive training tools (i.e. those that are considered positive punishment or negative reinforcement in operant conditioning) - e-collars, prong/pinch collars, dominance theory techniques (alpha roles, forcible laying, etc.), choke chains, etc. EDIT: I forgot to add that aversive training leads to high levels of stress in dogs, damaged human-dog relationships and is no more effective in training than reward-based techniques. A great video!! Apologies for the length of this :)
@OlivertheBeagle6 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! This is such great advice. I really echo what you wrote about finding what motivates your dog. Oliver responds pretty well to regular dog treats from Trader Joe's, but not so much to kibble. We use very high-value treats (sausages and chicken nuggets) when we are training Oliver his emergency recall word. It's a word that we try to reserve only for genuine emergencies when we need him to come to us right away, so that we don't wear it out.
@OlivertheBeagle6 жыл бұрын
I should add that Oliver's response to his emergency recall word has changed over time. When he was younger, he could come immediately when we said his emergency recall word. Now, he's becoming more skeptical. Unless he already knows that we have some high-value treats on us, he often doesn't come when called. Instead, he just stops where he is an looks at us, to try and figure out whether we really do have a treat to offer. Oliver is becoming more aware of whether we have a treat or not, and he is less responsive if he is pretty sure that we don't have a treat. But the word is still useful, because it's enough to get Oliver to stop whatever he is doing and look at us. That way I can run over to him, for example in the dog park, and leash him up--he won't run away from me if I've used the recall word. We're going to keep trying to retain the power of that recall word! Every couple of weeks, we try to do a training session outside where we reinforce the recall word with some high-value treats.
@SmudgetheBeagle6 жыл бұрын
Thank you, for taking the time to comment so fully, very sound advice. Smudge prefers toys or a game as a reward. It was so evident at puppy training classes when all the other dogs were so excited over the super special treats but for a few minutes play with a special toy she is much more keen to have training time!
@DogCompanion6 жыл бұрын
@@OlivertheBeagle while there aren't many problems with positive training, selective response to commands is one of them. After some time, people become more acceptable to a commands response (e.g. asking a dog to lie down, but the dog only sits and the owner accepts the sit instead) or reduce the amount of quality of the reward. But you are doing the right thing to ensure your recall is sound! Practicing with quality rewards and rewarding for nothing less than what you want is the way to go to maintain a solid recall. Thanks for the reply and kind words 😊😊

@cesaralvesdemoraes31875 жыл бұрын
@@Robotpo what you probably should have done is eliminate completely the reward from stealing (not letting him steal) and correcting him when he tries to. Then if you give him treats when he does what you want he'll realise that treats come from you, not from doing anything else. A big problem with training dogs is letting them get rewards from bad behaviours. That is literally training them to behave badly.

Most dogs (specially hound) are food orientated and respond well with food treats for training. However, out of all dogs I've trained, a friend's beagle, was the first ever, not to be slightest interested in treats of any kind, at all... until I introduced edam cheese 2 weeks later, and everything changed immediately :) 3:34' that hand signal is usually used for the STAY command ;) - but really well achieved here! ...and the DOWN command, most folks find easier with hand signal opposite of sit up - so hand waving downwards. Awesome and short video. Thanks for sharing :)

My beetle dog is female and about the same age as oliver. I think she loves him, when she watches him on the clips. BEST companion dogs in the world to have as a pet. They seem to develop their own personalities . I would not trade mine for good money. Mine as with a lot of beagles has seizures. I look out for them and carefully massage her neck and head when she is having one. Seems not to last as long. She is really attached to me. Her treats are milk bone dog biscuits, she loves em.

We also have a beagle. We trained him the same way, too.

Based on the fact that Oliver basically only will actually do the thing when a treat is forthcoming, and the sleeping on the stairs video, I think he has the upper hand in this relationship.

Training schools............hhhmmmmm I've tried that with two different dogs and two different trainers and they were both a disaster for me. I'm sure there are some good ones out there somewhere but I didn't have any luck at all with that. I found it was easier just to get to know my dog and build a relationship with my dog and work "together" with my dog. Training isn't all that difficult if you're willing to take the time and effort needed to do it. This is just my opinion but it worked best for me, better than either of the training schools I tried. Oliver's a good little student! He's so smart and attentive too. It's easy to see why he responds to you so well, because you're calm with him and you both respect each other and those are two very important things that people have to learn when training their dog!
