Eunny begins this episode with three types of steeks: machine, crocheted, and unfinished steeks. She'll demonstrate each one and show you how it looks when you actually cut your knitwear.

This is so helpful! I have a pull over sweater my late mother made for my father in about 1975. It is Icelandic wool. While I love the sweater, it was made for a large man and I am not all that large. I want to wear it as a cardigan and I have been fretting about how to make it into one since my father died; really afraid to do anything to it for fear I would ruin her work - it has just been sitting in a drawer unused and forgotten since my father died. I do not k now how to knit, but my mother did teach me to crochet and I am going to use the crochet method for the steek. Thank you for this tutorial! I'm looking forward to using this lovely sweater once again.

Good. A new technique for me, good to see it demonstrated so calmly and clearly.

The single crochet secured steek is generally used for animal fibers (like wool and alpaca) that will felt a little bit eventually but not as readily as Shetland yarns. The machine steek is definitely called for when using fiber that won't felt at all, like what you mentioned... silk, cellulose fibers (cotton, bamboo, linen, etc.), and synthetics like acrylic and acrylic blends.

This is a awesome video. I am making my first blanket that involves using a steek. I have been scared to death thinking about cutting my steek when I finish my project. You have explained it so much better than the pattern that I am using did. I love the crochet method you showed. Thank you so much Eunny, you are amazing!

You are delightful. I feel more comfortable with the idea of steeking. I actually didn’t know it existed until I decided to read the pattern before beginning a Colorwork sweater! Thank you! I think I can do this! 🥳

Advice: work your neck, sleeves or neck FIRST, then cut your steek. If your garment is very close fitting, knot and run ends in to garment. And, put your non snipping hand between the scissors and the back of your piece. Much love x

Thi s is a great description but the camera jumps angles a few times, right when you're about to cut. I'm most curious about what to avoid cutting at the cast on edge.

I'm also wondering about the v-neck. Are you knitting the steek in a triangle shape, then cutting across (diagonally) to get the V?

Hi. Thank you for this video. It was very informative, clear, and you have a very soothing voice. I have a question. Is it possible to make a steak in a crochet fabric? I'm going to try this on a little swatch, but I thought I'd ask anyway. I have a cardigan that I'm working as a large flat rectangle. I want to create an opening for the sleeves. At this moment, I think it can be done. I'm thinking that it might be possible to crochet until the opening point, and then with waste yarn, pick up 7 knitting stitches; do a color change with the waste yarn and the main fabric , and then continue along the row. I'm thinking that I would continue working for the length of the sleeve opening. After I complete the rectangle, I would then go back to the sleeve opening steek, and make the cut. I have no idea if this will actually work. If you still monitor this video, I would really appreciate any feedback, or advice about this. Thank you.

i have a store bought knitted pullover sweater that i'd like to split down the front middle to make into a cardigan, can you use this technique to do something like that? or is this something you'd have to incorporate as you're knitting??

So question. Say you want to knit a cardigan but don't want to have to purl that much. If you have knit the cardigan out of all one color/ball of yarn is it possible to steek it or will it not hold up since it does not have several stands of different yarn going through it? I hope that makes sense.

I've been hearing a lot of "steek" lately, but I don't normally use animal fibers, so this is really helpful! Thanks! As I watch this again, I'm wondering if you could possibly get something feltable, and use that for the steek on, say, acrylic, then finger-felt that yarn for the steek. Would it mess up the "line" of the knitting, assuming you use a similar wt yarn in colors close to the knitting piece.

Awesome video! I have one quick question though. Can the single crochet and machine stitched steeks be used with non wool yarn such as silk, cotton, bamboo, acrylic and acrylic blends, etc.?

What if you want to steek something but you didn't plan it when you knitted it or it was something you bought but wanted to change the shape? Can I just cut into the knitting?
