Three watch brands and how (and why) they make me feel as they do: Rolex, A Lange & Sohne & Bremont

Жыл бұрын

I recently bought the Bremont Supernova, and it feels sensational.
The supernova is my third integrated bracelet stainless steel watch, after my 1978 vintage Rolex Oyster Quartz and my A Lange & Sohne Odysseus.
Arguably, all three watches fit into the same genre that has been around for 50 years and it’s one that is still growing in popularity, decades after first making an appearance.
These other two watches feel fabulous too, but in different ways and for very different reasons.
Initially, I wondered whether it might be interesting to do a comparison and review of all three of these watches in detail - they all have integrated stainless steel bracelets, after all.
But then I started to dig a little deeper into my personal motivations; the reasons why I made every one of these purchases and how & why each of these watches make me feel as they do…
And I concluded that, actually, for me, the fact that these watches happen to be stainless steel and that they happen to have integrated bracelets was not the primary driver.
Sure - I love the bracelets on these watches - they’re a large part of the overall watch experience. I also love the way each of them looks - you can take that as read - but what really makes these watches feel great and what gives them significance, purpose and meaning beyond their core design & functionality is inextricably linked to my perception of and my relationship with not just the watches themselves & their bracelets but the watch brands.
That’s how I feel. At the core of it all, the brand is important to me. And What I think and feel, is all that really matters, to me at least. That’s at the root of my watch enthusiasm. It’s emotional. And if you’re anything like me, I suspect that much the same stands to reason for you too.
So I thought I’d compare the three watch brands and how they make me feel.
So that’s what this video is about.

The last year was pinnacle for my learning and development in the horology space. I’ve taken steps towards advancing my understanding of watches, and Watch making that I would have chastised myself for some 5 years ago. The way I’ve come to appreciate micro-brands and lesser known brands is one of the changes I attribute to this growth. I recently began doing research on Christopher Ward, which in turn allowed me to experience the launch of the C1 Bel Canto in a way I couldn’t explain to my younger self if I tried. Finding a watch (or brand) that I might have previously written off as boring, and learning about what makes the clock tick has truly helped me develop in the space, and understand what makes watches special, unique, and beautiful.

Loved the video and the passion you have for watches. Bremont is certainly marmite brand which seems to bring out seething rage in some enthusiasts but undoubtedly make a high quality product with technology for high shock resistance to protect the movement and scratch resistant cases. I was slightly worried myself about the size of the Supernova but the fact you can pull it off well on your wrist which is slightly smaller than mine gives me hope. Can’t wait to see what videos you do in the future.

Another wonderful story. You seem to have received a bit of stick for your 8k Bremont purchase which I think is somewhat unfair - although I won’t be shedding any tears, you’re hardly scratching around for a nice watch to wear 😢. I thought the trio of watches presented were a very interesting combination, demonstrating that you truly are a watch enthusiast who buys what appeals to them. I’ve no doubt that some will have scoffed at a quartz but credit to you-it’s in the mix. As you have eluded to in your video, these are luxury timepieces - items which nobody really needs but are purchased for enjoyment and indulgence. In the words of R W Smith ‘utility is the enemy of luxury’. Looking forward to the next video.

When I bought my H1 Fury, - this blue version 21:16 - I tried on the Supernova which was on sale at the time too...I wish I'd bought it now since imho, it felt very much overengineered & hewn from rock in its build quality. I'm still looking for an integrated bracelet sports watch. 😁

I had a better experience with my Omega chronograph (which normally keeps superb time and which I bought 15 years ago) than the one you had with your Zeitwerk when I took my Omega into their Leeds representative to be serviced. It came back with a bezel that soon stopped adjusting the date. I returned it and after further collection, the watch stopped completely after a few days. It was evident someone was not sufficiently experienced in working on a complex movement. Omega contacted the branch, I received an apology, a full refund of my not insubstantial servicing fee and the watch was returned to Switzerland to be entirely rebuilt. So I received an ‘as new’ watch, a free service and remain a happy customer. That’s how one should be treated.

i think that's the only way - buy a watch because it "speaks" to you. my watch collection would only trigger sneers from most collections but i adore it. i bought a new bremont ionbird (partly because i got it for 50% RRP and wanted to experience the brand) and i've been very surprised at how much i've actually like it. i wear it way more than my omegas currently. it's light (titanium) but extremely well balanced to it feels even lighter, it's right sized for my wrist, and i must have got lucky because it hasn't lost a single second in the last month (variance of + or -0.5s)... i just wish they'd used a traveler GMT mechanism because then i would never have to reset the time. i've never had one of my watches be this accurate before, and i'm hoping it lasts as i find it bizarrely fascinating.

@@watchenthusiastlondon I've used Submariner as a price point reference no necessary a direct competitor. Bremont is a young brand that is aiming for a really high price point not offering enough to justify it. The beautiful thing about people having different tastes is that there are multiple watches to match them. Otherwise we would all be wearing the same watch. Funny that you mentioned the Submariner's availability having such a hard hitting sports Lange. Best wishes to you and your family. Your videos are amazing and I crave for more. I’m seriously considering the Bremont Supernova. I will have to sell my one and only Rolex in order to afford it .. there’s no doubt the Rolex (an Air King 116900) will be worth more in the long run … but the Bremont is so fresh and new and exciting and not many people have them. I currently own two Bremont Kingsman watches (the Steel White Dial and the Black DLC versions) and have owned the Supermarine S2000 and an Alt1-B (which I had to trade in to get the DLV Kingsman watch) .. I also work for a small Bremont AD in Vancouver Canada, so I do get to handle them often. I like Bremont a lot. I was interoduced to them just in 2020 but I immediately loved that they're a British brand. I myself am a Brit. I just hope I won’t regret selling the Rolex which really took me a lot to get. I too am not all that interested in the value retention .. for me it definitely more about the brand, the build, the functionality and how it makes me feel. Though I'm a low income earner .. so the fact that I have any luxury watch at all is a minor miracle .. and it's a bit of a shame that I won't be able to have bboth the Rolex (which I do very much enjoy) and the Supernova. But the new Bremont watch offers something tantalizingly new, and I like the fact that it's something that people haven't really gotten into yet .. not to the Rolex example anyways. Thanks for you video. It's always great to get the perspective or a fellow enthusiast. Nothing is more boorish that people who buy watches as a Flex, or just to own and keep in a bank vault.

"sound decisions" and "watches" in the same sentence is a brilliant oximoron 🤣🤣🤣. My capacity for enjoyment of my watches is a standard feature of most enthusiastic collectors, I look at my watch to see the time, get distracted by the skeleton movement or one aspect of the polishing on the hour markers - forget to register the time and have to look back a few moments later to find the time 🤣

Personal taste and preferences are obviously highly subjective especially in the high end watch market, but it is a great news to see a young company trying to restore the unfortunately long lost tradition of excellency in British watch making. No doubt about the passion for his watches and the care in crafting the videos behind the gentleman who we all know as the Watch Enthusiast London. Great video. I'm not really a fan of Bremont; the styling and sizing aren't for me. That being said the Supernova was the first one that caught my eye and your filming does it justice. I also find it tiring when every new integrated bracelet watch is compared to a RO or Nautalis. It's shortsighted. As far as ALS, you were very comprehensive in the fiasco video, if the brand loses face that is due to Wempe, not you. As the customer and especially a high horology customer you should not have been put in that position. Part of me hopes that if the CEO reached out to you that he also reached out to Wempe and let them know who was boss. That's if I remember the way it unfolded, it was a long ordeal to cover.

Your collection is phenomenal but that Bremont, I’m sorry its a disappointment, a bold copy of Audemars Piguet’s bracelet, Patek Nautilus’s Bezel, and even maybe a Zenith display back. I’m also disappointed that you’re supporting this brand, I loved your channel was going but this is a low, I am not trying to troll or bash you, I’m just giving my honest opinion, I hope you’re not making a profit supporting this and I hope none of your audience fall into buying this crap.

@@watchenthusiastlondon No the Omega Constellation, Cartier De Santos and the beautiful Rolex Datejust you’ve just shown are original integrated bracelet designs. Patek Nautilus, AP Royal Oak and VC Overseas don’t count since they where made by Gerald Gentra. Copies are the Tissot PRX, Hunblot Big Bang and the Bremont Supernova, even the name copies Hublot that copies AP. Enjoyment of the timepiece is obvsly highly personal, and who are we to say if its $ well spent - as long as you're chuffed and its your $, congratulations! That said personally i agree with Frank on the bremont not holding up amongst rest of collection. Which (we) suspect you might come to realization after the honeymoon period (or you might not and once again thats great!) Yes it does seem of high quality and technically checks off a list of boxes, but failing to see anything outstanding/frontier/original/passion which can justify that asking. Maybe as a benchmark similarly priced grand seiko white birch with artisan dials, highly advanced and well finished movements (but of course it isnt the perfect watch.) Or a zenith defy classic/skyline/skeleton, or Chopard alpine eagle

With the greatest respect your opinion on Bremont isn’t exactly original and is the typical group think that persists on most watchforums. I understand Bremont has made mistakes and their designs and marketing turns a lot of people off but they make a high quality product. Calling them crap just speaks from a place of someone that has never tried them and regurgitates the opinions of others.

@@Cyime I don’t have to try it, I’m looking at 3 different watch brands copied in one watch, it’s crap. You’re talking about a brand established in 2002, and still can’t do the same like brands like Patek 180 years Zenith 150 years and Audemars Piguet 146 years old with patents, originality, history and recognition. Bremont is nobody and it’s a bad way to become somebody by straight up copying, I go as far as to say It’s rude and disrespectful by also twisting the facts about having an in-house movement, when they really bought THE+ who made the movement.

AP 15500 is 10 times better, than the ALange Sohne Odysseus! Higher horology, the bracelet, movement, aesthetics, case, and etc. of the AP is far superior than the Odysseus or ALange Sohne! The Bremont, is more beautiful than the Odysseus! Good review!

The Bremont is a Royal Oak rip-off regardless of how much you wanna deny it. The Odysseus is like Mercedes, very good engineering without good looks( which applies to all A Lange watches which are pieces of wonderful engineering without the flare of good looks). The Rolex is the only one that looks the part although it has a quartz movement. I’m surprised that you can wear the Bremont with a black tie!! Black tie outfits should be complemented with the like of Calatrava, Patrimony from Vacheron, or Classique from Breguet. I mean at least a Cartier Tank! The fact that you enjoy wearing the Bremont more than the A Lange only speaks for how ugly the Odysseus is and doesn’t flatter the Bremont at all. I enjoy your videos quite a bit. Keep up the good work.

The Bremont looks like a cheap microbrand. It's the least cohesive expensive watch on the planet right now.

I really enjoyed your videos and have just subscribed. You have a rare & precious voice in the Watch KZbin space. U speak from an unadulterated perspective of passion that is not compromised by endorsements or the need to sale any products. Given the costs of Lange, it is very rare to hear from a true passionate collector with first hand experience in ownership. I am sorry to hear of your experience with the Zeitwerk. I suspect that the 1st generation Zeitwerks may be more prone to technical failures given the formidable engineering challenges & the large amount of energy required for the movement. I can only hope that the improvements made in the later generations also include greater reliability. Bravo!!

Shocked that anyone actually bought that Bremont. The key to all these watches is the bracelet and that bracelet literally just looks like a badly proportioned Royal Oak knockoff.

Well, I think it’s gorgeous 🔥Personally, I think you need to look with better eyes than that… Happy new year
