Sony a6100, Sony a6600 & Glass One Week Later: What's Really Happening?

My bottom line as a photo enthusiast, hard core traveler, and street shooter, using the Imaging Resource Comparometer (very objective measure of image quality) is that the Sony a6400/and probably the upcoming A6600 is/will be outstanding. No matter the knowledge of this or any reviewers, only objective lab results regarding image quality ultimately matter (considering size of the camera, size of lenses, and cost as mitigating factors). Check out, for example, how yellow and washed out the Fuji XT3 photo image is compared to the Sony a6400 for face tones! It is NOT the winner in this objective lab test. I wish more reviewers would take the time to objectively compare camera images as part of the review before stating opinions. Notice how the reviewer states at the end of his video a personal preference for a tiny Leica-SIZE MATTERS! The Sony A6000 series is ergonomically brilliant in it's compactness for carrying around with one hand holding onto the grip and the small lenses. Regarding lenses, in addition to SONY's outrageously expensive line up, SIGMA has incredible lenses, so cheap, that fit the Sony A6000 series and are a game breaker for the average shooter. Check out the video quality of the A6600 on a recent You Tube video-it's outstanding! Again, although reviewers have their opinions ultimately it's so important for you to get to a bricks and mortar camera store, hold, carry for feel and comfort, and shoot test images with various cameras of the same scene, take home the data card, and compare images shot directly from each camera with the same lens if possible. Lastly, spend money on becoming a better photographer, no matter what camera you choose. :)

HAH! Sony a6400 with Zeiss Batis 85/1.8 - which should have been (and optically was) a killer combo. In this case, AF was set to wide, balance emphasis, Face Priority in AF on. I simply didn't anticipate any problems, especially as the Nikon Z7 which I have on hand right now -- and which has a relatively poor reputation for AF performance -- had no such problem. But there's the rub with even the best of today's AF systems. Claudia (who's originally Swiss) used a phrase this morning that tickles me and I think appropriate to this conversation: "schnickschnack." I took it to mean (from the context) that she eschews "bells & whistles" or techical complexity in cameras (literally translated from German, it can be used to mean paraphernalia, twaddle, poppycock, or balderdash, but I believe she meant it as I perceived it). Both of us devote virtually 100% of our mental energy when photographing to intent, composition, lighting, interaction with our subject, and manually adjusting the exposure triangle. Anything that siphons our attention away from these things is anathema to us. For me, having to decipher ANY kind of settings but ESPECIALLY AF -- or simply using trial and error -- is not how I want to spend my time. I think this a valid "use case," though I deeply respect and appreciate those of us who spend the time to do so.

As a sports shooter, This almost got me to cancel my a6600 preorder. My main reason for not getting the XT-3 is I don’t want to carry 2 cameras that take 2 different lenses. I may still do it and get the a6400.

The a6600 is a damn compelling package. But if you're spending that kind of money, you might as well spend a little more and get an a7 III. That EVF on the a6100 is ridiculous for a new camera in 2019. My Olympus OM-D E-M1 (circa 2013) has a 2.36 million-dot EVF. Being a Micro Four Thirds guy, it's amazing to me that Olympus just doesn't take video seriously enough to capitalize on the one major thing lacking in the GH5 and G9: phase-detect autofocus, as Hugh alluded to. The E-M1 series cameras have phase-detect autofocus, but they all have serious compromises for video...with the E-M1X having the fewest compromises. 10-bit 4:2:2 and 4K 60p aside, the E-M1 II has two particularly glaring flaws for video: a variable and often insufficient data rate and, most egregiously, a terrible pre-amp. I want Olympus to make a GH5 with all the bells and whistles for professional video and the added benefit of phase-detect autofocus. They would still a zillion of them.

Stills shooter with the a6000 here too. Samyang 12mm f2, Sony 50mm f1.8 and Sony 55-210 f3.5-6.3. Might get the Sigma 30 f1.4 too but what I'm really missing is a decent zoom-tele (>150 mm) that doesn't break the bank. The 55-210 really is as soft as a baby's bottom at the long end. Any suggestions would be kindly appreciated.

I’d be hard pressed to find a more informative and professional comparison to ALL competitive APS-C cameras on the market. Excellent work. You are so knowledgeable and seemingly sans bias. Thank you! I’m toting my A6400 that just arrived a few weeks back (vlogging, b-roll, and sit downs mostly). I’m currently debating selling most of my canon gear with the exception of my 80D & sigma 18-35mm, which I’ll get the mc-11 and use it for both when I need two shots. One day, ill have a FF camera for all of it but A6400 w/ kit lens for $800 new, 10-18mm f/4for $450, and 85mm f/1.8 for $300, I’m set for our YT channels’ “Phase 2.” Thank you again. Feeling grateful for my current choice of camera.

Basically A6600 has madethe a6500 cheaper so those who want ibis - work a lot with manual lenses the budget value option is a6500. When A6500 came out it was also around 1400. With the lightweight samyang line of FE lenses the form factor of the a6-600 comes into its own. Ibis is good for different kinds of hand movements whereas a light weight gimbal suffices for other kinds of movements. So bringinging out incremental models has several aims - gives budgetvalue to the older models which induce people to get into the system - incremented models work with the later a7 series & a9 (same batteries- cables etc) - induce those in aps-c to update even more to FF. Sony knows thatmany of us in the system are hybrid users. Not only in terms of photography& video but also having both aps-c & FF, using both manual & AF. I will probably update my combinationof AR2& a6500 with just an a7r4. Sonyhas made a very flexible system of cameras - combined with not just their own lenses but a variety of 3rd party lenses including vintage jewels. Thus catering to both high budget &also budget value users.

Yeah but 2.5m dot EVF doesnt tell the full story right? Beceause it depends how big the screen of the viewfinder is or not? So resolution or dpi would be more precise to compare to others? I mean fuji has 3.5m dot EVF but doesnt it have bigger screen in the EVF?

Conceptx9 great question. There are different EVF resolutions with a noticeable jump between XGA and UXGA. There is also a big difference in tech (OLED being significantly brighter with more contrast in my experience; refresh rate important but not as important for what and how we shoot at 3BMEP). And the optics in front of it. Then there are magnification and eye relief to consider. I like the EVF in the Panasonic G9; love the EVFs in the Leica SL and Panasonic S1R; and am really pleased with the lower res but very crisp EVF in my Leica CL. None of them is ideal for me - I’d like REALLY long eye relief because I wear glasses, and as big as the EVF is at max magnification in the G9 (.83x), I’d personally benefit from a super high eye relief, high refresh rate, OLED 1.0x. 😈 To your specific question re X-T3 vs 6-series: our 6400 EVF feels cramped by comparison.

Outstanding analysis, Hugh! And, the most insightful, thoughtful, and accurate content I've seen regarding the launch of these two cameras I've seen to date. We now have the 6000, 6100, 6300, 6400, 6500 and 6600 APS-C. Don't blink, 'cause Sony might release the 6700, 6125 and 6650! 😉 All silliness aside, that's a LOT of cameras in one mirrorless market segment. As a long-time product developer for very technology-based products, here's my professional take: Sony is increasingly fractalizing* its market segmentation & product differentiation with too much incremental iteration within its APS-C portfolio. As you've pointed out, it's a play to prevent APS-C customers from "leaking" to other brands, but the downside is its also notably more complicated for customers to determine which camera is the best value proposition for meeting their needs.🤔 Now that Sony has read _Blue Ocean Strategy,_ they next need to read _Dealing with Darwin_ because the problem with "fractalizing" their product portfolio is there is an ever-smaller number of customers within each "fractal" segment. (*-ref: _Dealing with Darwin,_ Geoff Moore, 2008). Again, just a great analysis. Cheers, Stephen

Very interesting analysis thanks for commenting. Their APSC line-up as it stands reminds me of tobacco companies. They deliberately flood the market with different brands to secure market share. Theirs is a shrinking market too. The 6600 could have been a great camera but instead will be a very good one. The old sensor, UHS l card slot and ordinary buffer show it was designed by an accountant not a photographer. On the plus side if you shoot Sony just wait another 12-18 months and another camera with some incremental improvements will come along.

@@peterlemke3468 I agree; this has been Sony's general approach to lots of product development and marketing over many classes of products over the years. The problem with lots of incremental releases is that customers are not particularly well-served by having to decide amongst lots of very narrowly differentiated models, as Hugh clearly pointed out. Fujifilm has a much more clearly defined portfolio with two primary & well-differentiated choices, e.g. X-T3 or X-T30.

I agree wholeheartedly about Fuji they clearly differentiate their products. They just need to improve their retail marketing and distribution channels. Hugh I love my Sony cameras but Fuji has spanked them and a few other big boys on the block, what sticks in my mind is the Sony spokesperson not 1 month ago making the bold claim they would "FAR EXCEED" their customers expectations. Not only have they failed at that, they released cameras that are 2nd place the day they came out. When they released the industry first native 200-600 and the A7R4 I was ecstatic but Sony continues to show no love to the APSC market and the kicker is they make the sensor for the competitor who spanked them I am not a video guy but if they wanted to take the lead the 6600 needed to a "REAL FLIP" screen and 60P with some higher bit rate options.

15:56 The fujifilm 100-400 is badly build. Its Tripod plate can't even support the balance of the lens and constantly tip itself over. Its focus rings and zoom rings are flabby and falls apart easily. To see what I mean you should search for the video made by the CameraVille

Hi Hugh, your video couldn't have come to a better time. A friend asked me yesterday for some insight or recommendation in regards to a good camera on a budget to get for her boyfriend. Being a very broad question this is the framework; he currently shoots everything on his mobile and wants to step it up a notch (no full frame required). Main application is general photography, animals especially insects, and also flowers etc. (so a nice macro lense option down the line would be stunning). I first thought about Sony A6series cause Sony's currently all I know but maybe Fuji or else offer the desired sweetspot for both performance and price. I disagree that the af in a6100, 6400 and 6600 doesn't matter in street. I wouldn't even swap it for cameras like a6500. With the 16-55/2.8 on my a6100 or a7riv I know that whatever the af square covers will be in focus as long as the shutter speed is fast enough. I mainly shoot streen and journalism and for work I recently started shooting my 16-55 on a a7riv. I find it a good combination with great ergonomic, light weight and manageable file size. And if I need/want full frame I just put on a nice ff-prime.

I found Fuji to be too contrast rich over the Sony's. I did that same test again yesterday and I opted to upgrade to the 6400 from the 6300. Fuji are still too contrasy for my tastes -and god know I like contrast just look at my flickr.

Love my A6400. Have the A7iii and A7Riii and for travel, lite is often needed. I have the FF 70-300 but the new 70-350 is much longer on zoom but 25% lighter. All the compromise are physics and it’s great to have these choices!

Imo people also shouldn't overlook the Sony a5100, as opposed to the a6000. It has some advantages over the slightly older a6000, especially for vloggers. Thanks to the flip-up screen, and the support of the XAVC S file format, which offers higher bitrate. I got mine for €170, secondhand. I am using it on a daily basis. Its weaknesses are easily worked around and its strengths are undeniable. Unless you truly need an EVF, the a5100 is a better pick. At the moment I am collecting FE glass for it in preparation for an upgrade to an A7??? Please Sony, please release a new body that everyone wants, so I can pick up a cheap A7 III...

The A5100 is an underrated camera, It's so small and works well with the equally small 35mm F1.8 OSS (also underrated IMO) for a genuinely portable street shooter. It even had touch focus before any of the other A series.

I'm really excited about that very versatile Fujifilm 16-80mm, especially based on what they are saying about the amount of stops of OIS. Time will tell but I can see myself switching to Fujifilm because of that lens, even if the body doesn't have IBIS unless Olympus decides to actually puts phase detection in their next E-M5. With Sony, I would never buy any of the 6000 series because I hate the rangefinder like view finder and I love the controls/dials/function buttons of Olympus and Fujifilm.

Heavy back lite situations, contrast detection struggles. If I have to pay the price of an E-M1 to get phase detection, it opens up other options.

Seems like Fuji makes more sense if you never want to go full frame and Sony makes more sense if you’d like that option in the future. I guess Sony also has more telephoto options since you can use their full frame glass like the 200-600, 400 f/2.8, and 600 f/4.

What's happening is... that Panasonic is blowing the doors off of Sony. Staying with football metaphors, Panasonic is leaving it all on the field with the S1H (or indeed, still with the GH5). That said, the a6400 might be the best bang for buck going for new shooters. But conversely the a6600 might be one of the worst. A bizarre set of un-needed compromises for a "flag-ship" camera. I have lots of Sony glass that simply sits on a shelf waiting for a camera that now appears to never be coming. During that wait time, I've fallen in love with Panny's menus, ergos, and mind-set. If Panasonic brings out a GH6 with 1 stop better performance, better handling of noise in the shadows, new flippy-tilty screen from the S1H, & a continued evolution in color science, that's what I'll buy. Otherwise, S1H here I come. Great video as always Hugh.

I guess I should have prefaced my GH6 wish-list as "for narrative shooters". The only time I use AF is for family gatherings & the like. It is odd that Panny - even with the S1H - has chosen to stick with a system bound to relegate them to a distant 3rd place in the AF race. Obviously they're thinking that the S1H appeals more to movie makers then to vloggers, but it might end up costing them in the end (especially if the mythological a7sIII ever arrives).

I'm switching from Nikon D3300 + 35mm F1.8 to Sony a6100 + Sigma 30mm F1.4. I'd like to do do street photography, portraits and architecture photography, but I also need flippy screen and reliable autofocus to make videos for my KZbin channels. Canon EF-M has no growing possibilities to full-frame and Nikon Z50 is 150/200€ more expensive, has lower resolution and older sensor, worse autofocus and a flip-down screen that is useless on a tripod. Moreover there's no Sigma 30mm F1.4-alike lens on Z mount, while APS-C lens selection on Sony looks better. I also thought about switching to Fuji, but the X-T200 costs as much as an X-T30 here in Italy, they have less third-party lenses and their good ones are quite expensive. Moreover, as it is with Canon EF-M, there's no full-frame growing future here. Anyway, I know I'm gonna miss the handling and solidity of my trusty Nikon D3300, but do you think I made the right choice?

I have the a7III and love it. I have a selection of Sony and other e-mount lenses that cover a very comfortable range. I love them as well. Yet I do want an APS-C body as a B camera along side the a7III and the extra reach that an APS-C gives me. I shoot video and stills, my eyes are old and hurting so AF is important and Sony has managed to nail my camera and physical needs. But I’m on the fence regarding the a6400 or a6600. I have a gimbal where I would likely keep the APS-C mounted, but not ‘all’ the time. And IBIS does help those micro jitters that even a gimbal can’t always get past. I could get by with the a6400 for the most part, but that equates to a different battery and a different charger to pack. It does not allow for as smooth a run and gun shoot. That extra $500 keeps my battery collection down to the same Z battery across the board. The IBIS, even if it’s not spectacular, does help in hand holding. Helps on a gimbal and combined with an OSS lens works pretty good under a run and gun scenario. But you’re correct in the fact that the a6600 has no other WOW factors. But as a side-kick to the a7III, I can’t get anything better in the Sony lineup and to be honest, this will likely be the last APS-C camera I would buy. So, I’m leaning towards the a6600, yet I know in two years when I’ve added in the A7SIII (or IV), will the a6600 still hold up? It likely will because it will be good enough for those secondary shots or a discreet day on the street and I’ll be long over the extra $500. It’s really down to money. I’m shooting Sony, so I want that consistency across the board and I think the a7III and the a6600 will do an outstanding job side by side for a few years down the road. The new a7S will be the tipping scale camera for Sony if you’re shooting video. If it’s not knocking things out of the park, then the story will change for many Sony shooters. I think I have convinced myself that the extra $500 is not a huge price to keep cameras and batteries consistent in my backpack. The truth is, I shoot one job and that $500 is well looked after. Screw it, wait until November! a6600!

For birders and sports the amazing and good value Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS at $1,998 would be the lens to beat (the reach on APS-C is incredible). Also you forget the truly excellent FE 90mm F2.8 Macro, the sharpest best quality and most usable macro made only $998, doubles as a great portrait lens, storming on APS-C.

Sony is like the thirsty crow who drops pebbles in a pitcher of water so the water rises to the top, allowing it to drink. They are dropping these a6000 series to crowd the market so as to entice these consumers to take a gander at their competitively priced full-frame cameras. I myself am enjoying my a6000, since I don't do video, and when I do upgrade the true vertical growth is the A7 lineup. Sony is playing chess while others are playing checkers.

I'm on a5100 with kit lens and Sigma 56mm f1.4. Wondering if I should get the other two primes (16 and 30mm f1.4) or just upgrade to full frame. Used, a7r III is not that expensive but the lenses will cost more than the camera itself. The funny thing is, as far as image quality goes, the super cheap a5100 is very similar to the new a6600. I think if I upgrade past a nice prime set on apsc, the only way to go is out of apsc world.

Never been interested in Sony APS, though I did find the white A6000 eye catching. Did like the look of the A7 when it came out but it was way too early to look seriously; gosh that kit zoom was ghastly. I was interested in the Zeiss 35mm f2.8. it looked stunning but they had no other lenses I was interested in. Whatever, I was loving my Leica X113 with Visoflex and the image quality was stunning and I dumped Nikon, investing in Panasonic. Well I have a lot of classic lenses so tried the Leica T and then TL2 and the image quality was stunning plus, I adapted all my lenses to Leica M and used a M to L adapter. Long story short, image quality unbelievable but, exposure and focus as flakey as a chocolate teapot meant I rarely got a decent shot, never indoors and ended up using my X113, which is always reliable, so sold my TL kit. So I had a load of M mount glass, what to do? Last month I saw an offer on a Sony A7 with 50mm f1.8 kit for £600 after cashback. How could I resist and immediately bought a M to EF adaptor and a Zeiss 35mm f2.8. I have to say I am impressed. Dont care about AF or special features which I always turn off, I point the camera at my subject and it snaps into focus and takes a well exposed image that is mostly useable; if it doesnt, points at the TL2, I sell it. The optical quality is excellent though the 50mm f1.8 is slow and will be replaced by the Zeiss 55mm f1.8 once I am fully happy with the camera. Dont need any other lenses as for longer shots i use my Panasonic GX9 and have my adapted Nikkor D primes. I fiond I am increasingly taking the A7 out mostly with the nifty fifty despite its shortcommings (for wider its usually the X113 I grab), so the Zeiss upgrade is likely soon. Really nobody else is making full frame compact equipment and Sony seems to have cornered teh market. Yes Pros want these silly huge bloated lenses but the mass market buys domestic friendly equipment and that is what plumps out the bottom line. Sony seems to understand this while Canon and Nikon seem to need another few years of market abuse to learn the lesson. I will take Zeiss glass over Canon and Nikon any day of the week (I have been using Zeiss Planar and Sonar glass all my life); once you have tried Leica there really is no way you will compromise on glass - have fun ;-)

Firstly, there is a 'd' missing from the World Wide Photo Walk url. Secondly, as someone with no interest in video, who mainly shots street and for whom size and weight are their main concern, I am more than happy with my GX9 and G90/95. That said, I sat through a 30 minute video about the new Sony’s because I knew that the analysis, not only of the cameras themselves, but also the wider industry, would be first rate, and I wasn’t disappointed. So please keep up the excellent work! 👍 Though, as someone else has already mentioned, maybe lock the autofocus next time. I kept thinking my varifocals had slipped. 😀

Thanks for this excellent analysis, I really appreciate you taking the business strategy aspects into account. On a totally different point: can you expand on why you don't like the Sony E 50/1.8? I looked it up on your channel and the only mention of it I could find was this quick video in which you seemed positive (kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5eWYXedapWLock). Considering the price I think it is of great value, although the Sigma E 56/1.4 is probably better (but its availability on the second hand market is tiny).

A7RIV sadly is not an APSC in one body... simply because it overheats in 1080p at about 30 min... That has thrown a very cold bucket of water on my plans and makes me seriously worried about my investment into Sony glass.

Sony has stopped innovating. When they start to under feature it makes it really bad. The gap they had with other camera companies is narrowing down extremely fast and in APS-c it is gone and others have taken the lead.

The A6400 was a hit out of the ballpark for Sony... The A6600 was only a double-bagger for A6400 owners... Convinced me to sell my A6500, keep my A6400 and buy an A7iii... The 16-55mm f/2.8 lens convinced me to buy the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8. I was hoping for some ground shaking improvements with the A6500 replacement such as a 1/8,000 shutter speed and a 1/250 second sync speed... I got an open box A7iii and a new Tamron lens for less money than the A6600 + new Sony 16-55mm f/2.8 lens...

There is NOTHING new in these cameras. They are remakes of the 3 years old a6300/a6500. What i mean is this. Same old sensor, same old (terrible) rolling shutter, same rendering techniques, same old ibis system, 90% same old hardware, same old codecs is video, same 4K 8 bit 30fps video, same poor and soft HD & slow motion. NON of the known issues have been addressed. The only new in these cameras compared to a6300/a6600 is the much better battery and new AF routines (which is more a software/firmware updates). oh yeah. And the plastic flip mechanism. At 1400$ , a6600 is TOO EXPENSIVE for what it offers compared to a6500. Better buy a6500 to save some money. Video users definitely have NO reason at all to buy these old hardware. With 100$ more they should check the much better Fuji X-T3 with 10 bit 4K 50/60 fps video and much better quality in HD.

That's in detail what Mr. Brownstone said at the beginning of the video, Sony conserved resources for this release and is not really trying to compete in APS-C (which sucks for me as I love the small size of those cameras). So software only, as you put it, saves them time and money which they throw towards full-frame as you can see in A7R4 and the soon to be released A9II.

a6100 is completely pointless. Eye AF for video? Worthless. a6600 is a 2014-2016 tech for a 2019 release that is priced at fullframe price. Lenses? Not a single good one. It just canon's cripple hammer with a million pointless releases which just miss features for different price ranges to confuse buyers and compete with dedicated smaller sensor brands (which are better). Compared that with Fuji X-t3, X-t4, and x-t30 (which makes sense for its size) and the excellent lenses to choose from for video and photography. I do not get why olympus is ignored as an option for bird photography despite its AF and excellent 300 f4 with several teleconverter options.
