It's really a shame and embarrassing that groups like Three Dog Night, Grassroots, Tommy James and the Shondells, and many other Great Grupps, are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!! These people who determine who gets in and who doesn't make it in the rock of Roll Hall of Fame have absolutely no clue about good music and therefore should not be judges of who goes in and who is locked out Three dog night Grand funk railroad and many others should be in the Rock and roll Hall of Fame these people don't know squat about these musicians and I would tell every single one of them to their face gladly

You said it, brother. I was a teenager in the '70s, and these bands are in MY Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, with honors. "Never Been to Spain" is one of my all-time-fave headbangers, the thing just builds and builds until you can't stand it anymore; I just sang myself hoarse while listening to it just as I used to do 50 years ago. Man, those dogs could SING.

Songs like this and groups like Three Dog Night really sank into our souls when we were young back in the 60's and 70's. When you picked up a new album, you not only listened to it many, many times, but you really paid attention to every little bit of it. You learned every song on your album by heart and could sing all the words. We weren't as distracted by other things back then: TV wasn't on 24-hours a day, no Internet or computers, no cell phones. There was time to listen to your music, talk to your friends, read plenty of books and ponder your life. It was a great time to grow up.

OMG! I was on the crew who shot this video!! This was for the Hy Lit TV show, a local Philly Bandstand-like hit show (1965-70) that for a while was syndicated to others towns like Boston and Cleveland. We actually used that little toy, seen inside the bass drum here, to balance the colors. Remember this one well, though we shot many big acts in the day. Whoever posted..thank you!!!!

Al, Todd Kimmell here in Philly. Where is all the footage for Hy's show? Who produced the show? Channel 48 was put on the market with no buyers, the broadcast license going back to the FCC. Channel 17 bought up all the equipment and miscellaneous from the bellied up 48, but would they have bothered to take what was at the time just recently out of date footage? Here is a great photo of Chief Halftown, our neighbor out in the Glen Mills area, that you can send me a response through the message area of the page, if you would. Thanks! www.etsy.com/listing/116202593/vintage-philadelphia-print-chief?ref=shop_home_active_21

Hey, Todd! Great to hear from you. Most videos are gone, but a small percentage survived.I actually found a 2 video set called "The Best of the Hy Lit Show" volumes 1 and 2 with about 25 of the videos we shot, Iron Butterfly to Barbara Mason.It includes some we didn't shoot, mislabeled as though we did. I bought it from Vintage Vinyl at VVMO.com, a guy named Steve Kay, 925 Davis St ,Evanston Ill 60201. Wasn't cheap; 60 bucks including shipping, but meant the world to me. Joe Saraceni produced and directed the best ones, though Guy Galante did a number of them as well. My job was mostly lighting and camera. All the best, Todd!

In all of history, how many people people can take a signature Otis Redding song and own it like a Boss? One.
@chipgaasche49338 жыл бұрын
Otis did NOT write this, John.
@johnbeckman89168 жыл бұрын
Chip Gaasche _ No he didn't, it is an old song. Otis "owned" it by the strength of his performance when he recorded it. And when you think of O.R. classics, "Tenderness" is among his top song performances. Who in History can say that they can stand toe to toe with O.R.? In my opinion, Cory "owns" this song's best performance with the TDN version. That really is a testament to Cory's extraordinary talent.
@chipgaasche49338 жыл бұрын
John Beckman I love Redding's version. I REALLY love TDN's version. (you confuse me... you state BOTH Otis AND TDN "own it"???)
@johnbeckman89168 жыл бұрын
Chip Gaasche _ We agree. Otis was first to record his version in the modern Rock & Roll era. He knocked it out of the park as one would expect with a man of his talent. _ A few years latter TDN bravely produced their cover of this incredible song. What rarely ever happens is that the new group out shines the master. In this case they did. After Cory laid down his track he "owned" that song from that point. For Cory to take on that challenge and deliver that performance forever cements him as a Rock mega star. I know of no other star that can say that they shine brighter than OR on a song that he pored his soul into. Cory stands alone. I will always have the utmost respect for both artists. Cory has the better version. _ Cory also displayed his greatness on other TDN classics like "Never Been To Spain" and he also wasn't the only mega talent in TDN. Chuck was huge too. A ton of talent in and around that group.
@chipgaasche49338 жыл бұрын
John Beckman I like all 3 singers in TDN, but Negron was my favorite. Let us not forget the contribution of the backing musicians in TDN. What a tight, inventive lot they were.

I had the pleasure to meet Cory a few years back...actually the whole band...they were all very nice. Cory was shocked to see his solo album in my hand, and we spoke briefly about it, and he was as nice as could be. Gentleman. Voice that could melt butter....God bless him..I'm sure his family is so hurt to loose him...bless them too.

@@coltpurves nobody did this song better than Three dog night including the nightclub singer Michael Buble who absolutely barbecues this song I would love to barbecue him in a music contest and yes I would go face to face with him

The outstanding vocals of this group notwithstanding, you really have to give props to the four musicians backing them. Mike Allsup's guitar parts were so well crafted along with Jimmy's outstanding keyboards, all superbly anchored by Joe's bass and Floyd's drums. I don't think I can cite a four-piece band better than these guys.
