Rebel Moon was in his mind since his college days, it was inspired by 7 samurai, Heavy Metal magazines etc. He pitched it to Warner bros couple of times, they rejected it. When he was at post production of Man of Steel he pitched it to Lucasfilms he wanted it to be R-rated and movie with the new characters, then Disney bought the Star Wars and it all went to nowhere. Now netflix greenlit it, but they wanted 2hr movie bc algorithms, attention span of the idiots etc, but Zack already had 200 page screenplay and made a deal to make it a 2 part movie so story can breath. Now it will be about 2hr movie each with pg-13 rating, but later he will release the Director's cut with additional 1hr footage and R-rating. And btw that's Djimon Hounsou is singing at the beginning :)

Yeah, Zack pitched this stand alone film to Lucas Film back in 2012/13 before they hired JJ Abrams to write/direct Episode 7.

The biggest obvious influence on this movie is Heavy Metal fantasy , sci fi magazine. And that's the one thing you youtubers aren't mentioning. Yall are obsessed with reading into this all these other movies. I'm shocked yall didn't name Mary Poppins

I'll watch it, but I'm not a massive Zack Snyder fan. My main problem with his filmmaking is that the way he tends to shoot feels more like a music video than a film. It reminds me a lot of the last time he got complete creative freedom, which I believe was Sucker Punch. Which again looked glossy and fancy, not much going on under the hood, though. Respect to them for somehow getting Anthony Hopkins for the voice-over, though.
