[Verse 1] The sky took its cue, every color and hue on display Till thick veils of indigo signaled the end of the day But each landscape that lies in the mirror of your eyes turns to grey Ooh, ooh Ooh, ooh [Verse 2] On the edge of a knife, it's like you're living your life on the stage You're talking through glass, we're just square photographs on a page Oh, we're never alone but we're each in our own little cage Ooh, ooh Ooh, ooh [Chorus] You're here but it's clear you're just salt and shadow Here, but half a world away You're here, but you're merely a hologram Here, still so far away Ooh, ooh Ooh, ooh [Verse 3] You manage to hide even here by my side where we lay Here on this bed where I sense every thread start to fray And I feel our skin touch but there's only so much it can say [Chorus x3] You're here but it's clear you're just salt and shadow Here half a world away You're here but you're nearly a hologram Here, still so far away

#SaltandShadow is a melodic and melancholy song that mourns the experience of relational distance even though a person may be close physically. It is an interpretation of the philosopher Seneca’s quote, “To be everywhere is to be nowhere”. . The sadness, loneliness and loss evoked by the lyrics could apply to many situations - a person on their death bed, a cold marriage, or a person with whom there’s an impassable worldview difference. In the context of this album, this song is about the loss felt when someone detaches from real-world relationships in favor of virtual ones on electronic devices.

It's amazing, scrolling back listening to music I used to listen to and remembering the person I was then and THEN realizing that those I LOVE said I never changed. Realizing that they were wrong and that I have become an amazing, lonely, loving man and fight I fight and I fight and I fight. If you read this and feel better, I fought for you too and I love you, stranger. Sucks being a person who cares about everyone else 😕. If you read this, wherever you are, I would love to be your friend...

Love you brother. Jesus has you close to Him. The Bible says “draw near to me and I will draw near to you”. God saved my life from depression. I’m lonely too man. But He is the yoke we can cast our worries onto. The loneliness will be there but when you learn to thank Him for it, it becomes a different kind of life. One with endurance and perseverance and purpose. The loneliness will be there but we have a helper. ThankingGod for the bad is a type of level that you can’t describe.

I lost my husband 3 years ago sadly too depression and drugs. He had the world in his hands! Made 100 grand a year. Beautiful cars, beautiful home... He still taken his life.. it's not what you have. It's in your soul..it broke my heart to watch him wither away.. he was a beautiful awesome young person. This song I cannot ever stop listening to him because I feel more connected to him. It's definitely our story in this song.. Please if your depressed, get help! Don't turn too drugs.. I'm 34. He was 37. Supposed to be 40 now. My life will never be the same. Not mad, confused, hurt, and sad is a under statement. I'll probably loose it when I hit 37 much less surpass his age.. I feel like the salt, and he's the shadow.
@tamraflowers85724 жыл бұрын
wow... this comment made me choke up and cry. I suffered from sever depression my whole life until I found Jesus Christ. You are 100000% correct when you say that it is "in your soul" and NOT in the material things you own. Nor will your happiness ever be determined by how "successful" your life is. It is what is in your soul that matters, even if you have nothing to your name. God has promised us that through our FAITH ALONE in God and in Jesus Christ, his son, that we will be able to bare the horrors of this earth full of sin. And those who are able to endure and keep their unwavering faith will be called to heaven where "God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away" (Revelation 21:4). This is God's promise to us all. I pray that it brings you some comfort during this trial. Just remember that God is with you, and that he has also promised to NEVER test us more than we can handle. I pray that you remember this second promise as well, and that it also brings you strength and comfort. And lastly, here is my promise to you... any time you feel scared, unsure, depressed, or cannot handle the pressure/sadness, just take a step back, BELIEVE in God for even a moment, humble yourself, and fall to your knees and pray to him. Ask him to strengthen you in your times of hardship, and ask of him to forgive and wash away all of your sins and make you new again. God is always listening, and always forgiving and merciful to those who honestly and truly beg for mercy. Stay strong, remember these promises, and you will be AMAZED at all that happens next. I will pray for you.

During an interview, Dustin said it was about everybody being so involved in technology, instead of reality. People hang out and use their phones instead. Thrice i'm so grateful to have found you ten years ago, and this journey through my life so far would not have been possible without you. Countless times i've stared at the stars when things were dire and all hope was lost and just put some headphones in and listened to your music to get me through it, from the very bottom of my heart and soul I thank all of you as a band and individuals for making music that helps guide us through life and gives us strength when we need it, and as a musician I thank you for taking the turn away from the ordinary making something truly unrivaled in terms of musical creation. Never have I felt such emotions as I do when I listen to your music, especially when I'm sitting behind my drumset. Why did you all have to be so consistent with your music and continue delivering amazing vocals, and just beautiful music??? Why couldn't you just be shitty like other artists and release shit tunes for the $$? I've gone through so much shit in my life , and this album has made me go through a range of feelings I've been trying to avoid. You're music is so overwhelming that it's hard to fee nothing. It has occurred to me that I have listened to and loved every album over the years. Every album for a different reason, a different subtle feeling about the process or structure of the albums. For me the water album from alchemy index was the best because of how deeply it spoke to me as a navy rat. ( I like to say that album single handedly carried me through that experience) tho a bit of an exaggeration but a complement nonetheless. THIS ALBUM THO. Its safe to say for me this band has gotten better and better each album.

Christopher Young don't you ever say that the Beatles were the Justin Beiber of there time they could never touch anything that thrice has put out Beatles suck i would rather listen to nickel back then Beatles and that's saying a lot

Lars Guddal You are a special kind of stupid to say that about the Beatles. Literally the dumbest fucking thing I've read in years.

The sky took its cue Every color and hue on display 'Til thick veils of indigo signaled the end of the day But each landscape that lies in the mirror of your eyes turns to grey Ooh, ooh On the edge of a knife's Like your living your life on the stage You're talking through glass Would you swear photographs on a page Oh we're never alone but we're each in our own little cage Ooh, ooh You're here but it's clear You're just salt and shadow Here half a world away You're here but you're nearly a hologram Here, still so far away Ooh, ooh You manage to hide even here by my side where we lay Here in this bed where I sense every thread start to fray And I feel our skin touch but there's only so much you can say You're here but it's clear You're just salt and shadow Here, half a world away You're here but you're nearly a hologram, so Here, still so far away Ooh, ooh You're here but it's clear You're just salt and shadow Here half a world away You're here but it's clear You're just salt and shadow Here but half a world away

To be everywhere is to be nowhere- live in the NOW-2024 is going to be ROCKY but we can achieve EVERYTHING WE PUT OUT IN THE UNIVERSE- say it out loud- manifest your peace, love -and dreams. Keep your head on a swivel and protect you and your family with your heart and soul. Great awakening is upon the world / good vs evil. Good AND truth will ALWAYS WIN. stay in the TRUTH!!🎉

How something so beautiful hardly gets recognition compared to the trash we are subjected to daily is beyond me.. This song is more than just amazing.

This album is mediocre at best. This is Thrice just trying their hardest to be The Chicken Brothers, who we all know is a huge influence on Thrice. Sorry, Dusty-boy but you ain't The Chicken Brothers. Do your own thing for once.

This comment has nothing to do with the meaning of the song. It always reminded me of a break up. Until I got the call, my uncle hung himself. Everytime I hear it I see those grey skies again. It helped me mourn and move forward. Thank you thrice 🙏
