THRIFT DOLL HAUL! Weird Talking Barbies?

I'm so fascinated by the Talk With Me Barbie and would love to see how she works. There's a KZbinr, LGR, who has a ton of computers and related software from the 80s and 90s and does "oddware" episodes trying interesting things out from those times. Maybe you guys could collab in some way to get her tested out for us.

I had the American Beauty Barbie and I still have her! She had her ball gown and her ballet outfit for the talent part of the competition and her swim suit. She came with ballet shoes. Such a beautiful doll! 80’s and 90’s had the best Barbie’s in my opinion 💕

I like the talking one. I had talking PJ and remember dolls that talk. People used to love innovation. I like that she has a desk top computer too. If anything creeps me out, it is how everyone is walking around with their own interactive devices.

I had the talk with me Barbie growing up. My age is about to show with this. LOL. I played with her non-stop - the best part about the doll was honestly the CD ROM. I believe you picked your name, your birthday, some uplifting phrases like "name, you are an incredible basketball player... - then you went through like a roleplay activity set where you picked what you wanted to do "go shopping, go to a game, go to a ball, etc etc..." - picked out the details (like who was going with you to the ball, what was your dress color, what type of food was there) - you even dressed barbie up, put her make up and nail polish on. Then when it was time to transfer the stuff you picked to have her reminisce with you (what you did in the CD), you played a balloon pop game while the data transferred to the doll. That is an amazing find in box. Thinking back on it now and seeing the commercial - the talking mouth is creepy to adult me... but child me loved it because she was customized with things that I enjoyed. Thinking more about it, I almost would describe this doll as the inspiration for the movie with Lindsay Lohan and Tyra Banks - the Eve doll - Life Size. She became your "very special friend" lol.

I had a “Talk with me” when they came out. The mouth works like a marionette/puppet. For the time period it was a very novel idea. You basically inserted a friends name into a series of sentences.

You *gotta* make a vid of just you playing with that talking Barbie and making her work. Modern machines should have backwards compatibility, and if not, there are programs for it. I would take a look. And of course, your reaction *if* they do work 🤣

I loved Talk with Me Barbie and I still have mine. I found a patch online and I made her work! It is cool but I've always loved talking dolls and automatons so it makes sense that I like her.

You’re lucky you find Barbies in such good condition at the Good Will. Here (France) it’s often busted dolls, without clothes (let alone their original ones), with half their hair missing or cut off. Although sometimes at Flea markets you can find nice ones. And on Vinted too.

Awww I had that superstar Barbie as a child as well as both a coloring book and paper doll that featured her. She was one of my earliest Barbie’s and I was pretty hard on her. Sadly she has been lost to time, but I may have a scrap or two of her outfit still. Ah the nostalgia. The little friend of Alena is so cute! I really enjoy seeing the Disney Store aesthetic on dolls outside their core princess line. I don’t even have to be familiar with the character. Disney store is doing such a nice job on their sculpts and overall dolls right now. I remember when doll companies were transitioning from snaps to Velcro. It pissed me off as a child and it still pisses me off. It’s so damaging to doll clothes and even dolls. I’ve definitely had lots of doll clothes ruined from forgetting to close the Velcro properly before storing. That leathery metallic material in the beauty Queen Barbie’s crown is so nostalgic to me. I’m impressed that the owner never cut the crown out. I also remember when they changed the waist size. Without looking it up, I want to say it was in around 1998. I remember being in 8th grade, or around that age, when they first introduced the solid torso model with the belly button. At the time, I thought I was “too old” for dolls (ah the irony) but I still thought it was a noteworthy change, even at the time. You and I must be of a somewhat similar age because we seem to have grown during at the same era of Barbie. That shade of pink will forever be iconic to me.

The 2nd Doll is Dance Club Barbie from 1989. You're missing her shoes, ruffled socks and a white jacket. The hat sits sort of off to the side a bit originally. I loved her but her head got broken off and the only way to fix it made her have no neck. The Disney Live Action Cate Blanchett Doll was her Step Mother Lady tremaine. I had a friend with the talking barbie, it was very creepy. Her mouth moved funny,and with statue like eyes it was worse. I am so glad that I never got her.

Great finds. Our Once Upon A Child closed. I totally agree about Goodwill.. I think part of it is because of resales. Goodwill feels like they're loosing out on the money. Most really good things they find they put online.

When my thrift store started putting all the toys in bags, i would buy the bag and take what I wanted out and shove it back on the counter. Like it probably would have ended up back there anyways and now they have to rebag it all more work on them for the inconvenience of not just pricing individual toys.

Omg I had the Talk with Me Barbie! I didn't find it creepy and I still think this is one of the least creepy animatronic toys ever made (looking at you, Furby) lol but yea man I remember playing with her when I was REALLY young and I couldn't honestly tell you how it worked, it's been so long. I’ve heard this about goodwill that is really disappointing that their prices have gone up to the point where it doesn’t feel like any savings. I keep meaning to try once upon a child in my area 👍👍👍 omg superstar Barbie looks so familiar I wonder if I had her or if my sister did 💕💞💗💓 awe the 2nd Barbie love as well I hear ya yes $5-$10 on Barbie fashion packs.
