I found men's blazer generally has better quality both on materials and workmanship, you can find a lot of such at second hand market. The only challenge is to resize them! I found the shoulder and sleeves are the most challenging part to deal with... also the lining part. You did a great job!
@FabSakker3 жыл бұрын
Yes you are so right! A lot of the times men's blazers are better quality AND cheaper 🧐 Thanks for watching Annie ♥️💐

I like your idea and it is great to be sustainable like this. As a formal menswear enthousiast and experienced tailor, I can advise any women looking to thrift mens blazers on the following: It's very doable to slim the waist down, easy to shorten sleeves (although you probably like the long sleeves to roll them up for a casual look), also easy to slim down the sleeves. Be warned about shoulders! Because shoulders are very difficult if not impossible to adjust, maybe only by maximum of 1cm, otherwise the sleeves will not fit properly to the jacket body. So what I'm saying is, make sure you like the shoulders how they are, because they will not change! Happy hunting.

It turned out great! When I was in high school I loved altering thrifted clothes, I stopped in college because I didn't have the time nor the space and tools but I may start doing it again. Love this videos.

Thank you Grace! You should totally start altering thrifted pieces again! It's so rewarding when it works out 😄I tend to go through phases where I thrift & alter quite a few things, get overwhelmed and tell myself I'm never doing it again, and then a few months later go back to it lol
@Gr95dc3 жыл бұрын
@@FabSakker hahaha I totally remember feeling so overwhelmed sometimes. It's really rewarding, but the fear and pressure of not knowing if you're going to ruin the piece is too high sometimes. Oh yeah, good times 😂 Still, I'll do it again when the sewing machine gets repaired 🤞🏼

It's hard to find women's jackets with anything like the quality of fabric, serious style, detail, and construction that men get. I love them. Right now I have my first cut-down project from an op shopped men's jacket, which I chose for it's breathtaking quality fabric: Harris Tweed. I could not leave the shop without it.

May I ask about how you ensured the arm still fit after taking fabric off the shoulder? All I really want to do is take fabric off the shoulder for mine, but I figure that will make the armhole bigger so I'll need to take in the sides of the blazer to make up for that. Did you calculate how much you'd need to take in the sides after doing the shoulders to make sure the armhole circumference matched the sleeves?

Most tailors do a lot of their sewing by hand. Do look up some proper hand sewing techniques and you should be fine. Don’t get discouraged, you will figure it out!
@this_mundane_life3 жыл бұрын
@@TriggaTreDay i tried sewing it by hand but my largest needle which I use for making garlands/ for binding books also got bent out of shape. I don't think hand sewing can work on blazers with shoulder pads. the blazer is now lying in a corner since then and my mother has asked me to never touch any piece of clothing for upcycling :(
@TriggaTreDay3 жыл бұрын
@@this_mundane_life ok, so I’m going to encourage you to try again, because I know you can get it done. I have successfully hand sewn plenty of things that had super thick layers of fabric. If it was sewn before it can be sewn again ok…! Outside of the shoulder pads, what type of material is the blazer made from? For certain types of material you will need different tools. Is it some form of leather? How were you using your needle that caused it to bend?
@this_mundane_life3 жыл бұрын
@@TriggaTreDay I really don't know much about the fabric except that it is not leather. There are multiple layers so when I tried hand sewing the needle bent out of shape. Maybe I need a much bigger needle?
