The higher the 100s, the more twists to the individual woolen yarns, and therefore the finer and lighter and more drapable the woven cloth. Super 100s is nice everyday wear grade, super 180s is very fine, special occasion level.

And it usually means it's brushed not carded wool, hence longer strands.

The problem with this response it it doesn’t explain the number. The count is the number of Hanks of yarn per pound of weight. In other words the higher the number, the thinner, lighter, and LESS DURABLE the fabric. The higher the number the more “luxurious,” but that Luxury feel sacrifices durability because is sacrifices weight and thread density. This is why billionaire Donald Trump always looks terrible. He buys super expensive super 180s and super 200s suits, wears them all day long, so they fucking wrinkle like crazy. They wrinkle because they are so lightweight. Also these suits wear like pijamas. They feel great against the skin, but unless you’re at a black tie event standing around sipping cocktails for only a few hours at a time, you’re better off getting a lower number. In the 1960’s we couldn’t make anything with a higher count than 80. Which is where the “super” designation came from, since 100 hanks per pound was then-thought to be impossible. Once mills cracked the code and reached 100hanks/lb they came up with the “super” designation to sell it as superior. It’s marketing bullshit. If you want to look good and wear a suit that drapes naturally with gravity, and doesn’t wrinkle easily, and will last forever, then get a heavier fabric suit like a a 60 or 80. Try donegal twead.
@suitcafe
@suitcafe 3 ай бұрын
I like the reply @ryanpipkin , mills take a kilo of wool and elongate that fiber until it snaps at 1000 meters. This has to do with the diameter of the fibers measured in microns. A super 100 is 18.5 microns. The diameter of one strand of wool. When the wool is elongated further to 1200 meters, it is a Super 120 and the diameter has now become smaller at 17.5 microns. As technology allows to create smaller diameters without the strand snapping such as Super 150s and Super 200s down to 16.5 microns and 13.5 microns respectively, the fabrics are not only finer, hence the higher super number, but also softer, making them more delicate, more easy to wrinkle and harder to care for. Suits above Super 180s are not for everyday and should be hung in the closet after each wear so any wrinkles could fall out, which they will overnight. Super 100s is very inexpensive these days and not considered luxury suiting any longer. Super 120s is perfect for daily use and since Super 150s has become commonplace it too is used for daily wear. Above that, prices go up exponentially for suits. Now in terms of summer or winter suits the super number will not tell you that. There are Super 150s for winter & Super 120s for winter that have a mill finish also known as a flannel finish. A super 120s winter suit will feel heavier than the 150s, but both are flannel and for winter if they have the mill finishing. We are talking a difference grams per meter squared. I have not seen Super 80s, since the 1980s. It doesn't feel good to the touch and super 100s and 120s are plentiful in cheaper brands these days so no luxury suit companies use anything lower. Customers these days are highly educated. In regards to what Trump wears, its off the rack Brioni. From what I know the navy suit is probably 150s or 160s about $4500-$6500. A Brioni Super 210s is over $14,000 these days. He can afford it, but I don't think he is the type to spend that much on one suit. He wears a new white shirt everyday from Brioni at $810 each. Even Elon Musk doesn't spend that on suits. He wears Tom Ford about $7,000.

The super '100' numbers refer to the number of sick-dope-swag that the jacket has. For example, if it reads "Super 150", then the piece has 150 sick-dope-swags. 🤝🏼

I used to resell these and agree, less picked over at stores, higher ROI but I stopped flipping them. Most of them take FOREVER to sell, return rates are higher because people think they should be a freaking perfect fit when this type of clothing often needs to be tailored anyways and they take up too much space. If you have the patience and space for them, then definitely recommended for men's clothing resellers.

I’ve sold 15-20 suits or sport jackets and I just picked up 5 more to list. I like them because I’m not a big reseller and the margins are high, but they do sit for a while to get that high margin. Learning to “pinch test” to check for fused or canvassed construction can be a big help with whether to investigate further or buy. There are many obscure brands that make high quality tailoring that can be tough to comp on ebay but will sell. Fused is cheap construction, half canvassed means your at least looking at a jacket with an original retail price of several hundred dollars, full canvass starts at around $1k these days so you immediately know it’s high end.

Apparently we have a UK Suit shortage at the moment, pandemic has meant more people working from home, less in office so less retailers are selling new suits, which has created a limited supply and also a bit of panic in the market, so everyone wants suits now.

It had 30-pairs of jeans (Levis, Wranglers, Urban Pipeline), 70+ dress shirts from lots of good brands, 30+ suit coats and 30+ pairs of assorted dress pants. It also had designer leather jackets, Levis jackets, Puma gear, Gore-tex weather suits, Wolverine boots, Rockport and Allen Edmonds shoes (25+ pairs) and the list goes on...one of my best pick ups! But, I've been balking at doing anything with the suit coats. The Real Real might just be the solution! Thanks!

Ive found the the sell through rate on 2 piece suits in these sizes is over 100% before factoring in brand. Ive found a bunch of crappy ones and have had some luck selling them but they are also the ones that sit longer. I cant seem to predict them. I had one sell for 100 the other day, unbranded. Ive had several that dont even get looked at

I always check the sportcoat/suit jacket aisle. It's something I'm definitely still learning about, and I do my due diligence looking up comps on eBay, but as you said, most people aren't looking at them. Living in Kentucky, we don't see as many luxury brands show up in the suits/jackets, but sometimes. Regardless, if I can find a jacket I can sell for $40+, it's worth investing the $6.59 for them, which is what Goodwill here charges. As far as Burberry, I've found a couple Burberry polo-style shirts and they sell pretty fast for a good $40-50.

I think suits are under-picked bc of suit usage decrease in the general population, as well. Working from home, etc., then if working at home you would only have a use for suit for funeral, interview, wedding or some special occasion. Also, down South here, you will not be able to sell heavy wool. I was lucky enough to find several designer brand suits to fit my husband in the regular store I thrift in for twenty-five cents (no, really). I DO look at suits and I know quality. If you learn womens clothing first, the mens suits are easy. You are RIGHT about the pin striping being less of a "separate." Thanks for the "sport jacket" terminology or naming convention preference suggestion; sounds good. Will use mannequin if I find anything that nice. Super great tips!!!!

I avoid the suits because I don't think they're fast sellers. Most men are going to meetings and work in casual business wear. At least that's what I see when I ride the transit. I may buy a suit jacket if it's below $5. Recently sold a Michael Kors jacket which I bought for .33c. It was a no brainer. But workers are still remote and men are not buying suits and jackets the way they used to. However, consigning to the RR might make some sense if you get the jackets for really really low price (.33c)

Matt! Good to see you up and about, hope you’re feeling well. I think you’re right about suits and jackets being a neglected category. I have a vintage Alexander McQueen in my closet that I no longer wear, and have been thinking of listing. I know enough about higher end menswear to make it pay; but since moving to a small town, I hustle just about anything. I’m expanding my knowledge into categories I never looked at twice before now. I think of you, when I stumble upon one of your bolo brands.

Simms anything sells like crazy for me. I’ve never come across boots but a few times have picked up their shirts. Their boots brand new go for over $100.

I have a men's suit I haven't listed yet. I am hesitant because a receipt for alterations was in the pocket and had me wondering about that. I'm pretty sure most men will have their suits altered, in some way, but is it a plus or minus to try selling a suit with a bunch of alterations? At least I have the receipt, so I know what was done and can note it in my listing.

Just be sure to take the appropriate measurements and note in the description that it was altered

Great video. Will the COVID thing ever be over? If it is I wonder if higher-end dress clothes, shoes, and ties will make a comeback. On another note, I bought my first book to resell the last time I was out thrifting.

It's not just COVID..........more competition+a desire to sell often=a race to the bottom. It's been like that for years-I remember the "glory" days where I was able to offer a small discount AND charge shipping in the H&B category.

What is the best way to check comps on sport coats? Look up the Manufacturer and the fabric maker? I don’t understand the difference between all the labels in a sport coat or suit jacket.

Thank you for making this! I am new to reselling but been at it for 3 months and am hooked. I heard blazers were a good category to sell because no one touches them but I know nothing about blazers especially mens other than what material is good like wool and silk. I was at goodwill yesterday and the amount of suites there was just crazy! There were so many with wool/silk blend but I was not familiar with any designer so I ended up leaving all of them behind so I could do more research. Do you run comps on all the suites you pick up? If you see a good designer like Loro Piana do you get it without looking up comps? And how long does it take to sell them? I hate sitting on items longer than 3 months. Do items sell pretty fast on The Real Real? Yeah and I am pretty sure I saw a Laura Piana label yesterday too! Thanks again!

If you don't know exactly what you're looking at, yes, look up comps always. Most suits take at least 3 months to sell. Price low to flip faster.

Why do most of the suit coats at Goodwill not have the size tags?

Hi Matt, did you remove the name tag before selling or kept it? I found a sports jacket and it has a tag name. I don’t know if I should remove it or not. Thank you in advance!

Do Loro Piana fabric suits still hold value if the sleeves have wear on them that makes the fabric more "shiny" - when it looks more shiny and bare and less "woolen"? I've definitely found suit jackets made from Loro Piana but the sleeves (down towards the cuff) often look and feel more worn than the rest of the jacket, so I've passed on several. Is this a normal thing that just happens with the fabric or should that kind of wear just be best left on the rack?
