A friend of mine who was from the travelling community here in the UK had a Grandmother called Tryphena,which is an old Irish Romany name.There is a tradition in the community that when a child is born its given a valuable piece of jewellery so that if they hit hard times in life financially,they can sell said item and get through the tough time

tbh it seems like her problem is with getting gifts for specific occasions? like if she doesn't have to think about when to give it, she has no problem picking stuff out, but the pressure of christmas makes it harder to decide on things. i'm the same way.

Absolutely nothing wrong with vintage/thrifted leather, wools, furs, etc. Not only are you giving it a new life, they tend to last longer than their synthetic counterparts, and you’re avoiding purchasing more plastics (synthetic leather is esp at fault here).

In the horse business and farm life, this would be unfeasible. We use leather items until they fall apart. Leather here is used from animals that are fully processed. As In every part if them us used for something. No waste. As a farm hand, I see no issue with leather and fur use when the entire animal is processed. Keep in mind what material you are purchasing. It's not wrong to purchase modern leather and certain new furs.

@@SwitchbladeSue if it’s used like that that’s wonderful but people who buy a fur coat to never wear it are horrible. But yes for horse riding f.e. leather is still very much needed and used and that’s fine, you usually know how it’s sourced too :)

@@SwitchbladeSue oh absolutely agree, I have no issues with leather in general, and certain furs are a-ok. I see leather as, by far, more sustainable than “vegan leather”, especially for shoes, bags, and applications where materials have to put up with lots of daily abuse, where cared-for leather will significantly outlast most other materials. My comment is mostly aimed at those who specifically avoid leather (and fur/wool to a degree) in their daily lives for sustainability reasons. The speed at which vegan leather breaks down and requires replacement, and the contribution of synthetic fibers to micro plastics making their way into the environment just does not make them a sustainable alternative.

Also as an extra note, but rabbit fur felt Akubra hats were made from rabbits taken from rabbit population control schemes in the 80's, 90's and even early 2000's. So they were making use of an otherwise waste product, and if you think of it that way, you are really helping the environment. :)

What you said in the beginning about listening to your friends all year for what they might need or want is the *definition* of a great gift giver! Sure, a beautiful pink shawl would be a lovely gift for anyone, but pajama shorts with hedgehogs is a gift you found specifically for Dan - that's very thoughtful! I love all your videos!

I agree. Of course you can get neutral gifts if you aren't sure but if you get them something that clearly shows you listened its even more special. it's like how I got not just colorful socks with cats on them. it no those cats look kind of like mine and they are mainly green in the background which is my favorite color. Somehow they managed to find not just the weird socks I like but also took extra care to hit those other very specific parameters.

That rabbit fur felt hat is most likely made from sheared angora rabbits and not skinned ones. They are specifically raised like sheep for their very long wooly fur and arent harmed when when their wool is harvested. They make yarn and felting wool from it as well

Alex, you give spontaneous presents to you friends all year long because that particular gift reminded you of them. Being a Planning Gifter and a Spontaneous Gifter are two totally different skill sets, but they both tell the other person how much you love them. Don't put yourself down for not having a specific skill set. If you want to get better at it tho, just take it bit by bit and practice.

Please don't feel bad about the rabbit fur in the acubra, aside from the hat itself being second hand, rabbits are a hugely destructive pest in Australia. They outcompete native species like bilbies and bandicoots a and finding a useful way of controlling the population is essential!! I live in rural SA and everyone wears acubras, they're wool, which is a great insulator but not too hot in the hot arid summer, unlike synthetics which are very very sweaty. They're good hats that don't release microplastics

The Akubra 😍😍 yes for supporting Australian businesses I actually love when you mention it's made in Aus. As for the whole rabbit fur thing, we have so many invasive pests here that ruin our native flora and fauna and I don't think most people from other countries understand what that's like 😢

The dress and those cushions...I have a backpack in the SAME EXACT PRINT. It's one of my favorite backpacks especially since it's waterproof as well! It was such a treat to see that print in other kinds of items. If I ever chance upon them in my country, I just might buy them myself. 😂💖

Another reason our thrift stores are more expensive is because Sydney is one of the most expensive cities in the world to live in, the 14th most expensive to be specific. I'm really loving the vintage looks you've been doing lately the style really suits you.

Hi Alex As a rule of thumb if the staff at an op shop (Australia ) can find the price of the item , they usually price the second hand item at about the quarter of the price . This applies to vintage and new with tags . Merry Christmas from Western Australia.

I'm so surprised there are no hedgehogs in Australia! We have them in New Zealand!!!! They are slug and snail eaters, great to have in the garden, you can hear them snuffling around at night.

You can always ask! "What are some things you might want or need?" There's no harm in that! I personally find it so relieving when someone actually asks me what I would like, it feels like you really want to make sure everything will be perfect! You can even ask the person in question to make a little list so there is an element of surprise. Don't forget, everyone is different! This is just what I prefer.

I just wanted to say thank you Alex. Because of you I have actually given op shopping another go (every time I used to go I never found anything). I went to my local salvos the other day, I didn’t find clothes but got a great pearl necklace! Real ones too, and they are so pretty!

Thanks for explaining how your charity shops work! Where I live (southern Canada), we’re staring to see a separation between ‘thrift shops’ where the goal is to provide items at a price low income people can afford and ‘boutiques’ run by the charity where they sell higher end items at a higher price with the proceeds going back into the charity.

There are over sunglasses for eyeglasses. I get mine at Walgreens. They look like stylish sunnies. It you are particularly crafty you can glam them up if you like.

Honestly the listening to what your friends say throughout the year is not "bad at giving gifts" it makes sure that the thing you give is really something they love and probably can even use or actually need! I do it like this most of the time too and so dose my aunt who is basically a pro at gift giving and wrapping! xD This was really fun! And honestly that anouncement of the dnd inspired gift giving guide is so thrilling! *.* With Dan around there had to be something like that coming around eventually … thank you Dan! xD ^^

My husband and I visited Australia in 2019 and we both bought Akubra hats! They are so well made and will last us forever. Mine has Kangaroo leather and an opal on the band. It was our little piece of Australia that we brought back to Canada with us. We wear them every summer.

You can get clip on glasses or sunglasses with prescription. I have a pair or clip ons and they are by far my fav pair of glasses I ever had and I've had glasses since I was 12 (I'm 31 now...)

I'd say you are an incredible gift giver Alex because you keep track of what your friends want/like and try to gift that to them. Also, white toothpaste (has a mild grit) cleans white gold and silver really well (may work on other metals but that's all I've tried it on). Use your fingers or a soft cloth and polish it. I've done it for years and it works every time :)

Love this guide. Can't wait to see the jewelry revitalized video. know there is a lot of anti fur and leather people but I will say Australia has a horrible problem with feral rabbits since they are an invasive species causing a lot of damage to the local eco system so try not to judge this harshly based on the rabbit fur hat.

I was just thinking the same thing. Wild rabbits are a massive problem. Better that all parts of them are put to good use than just culling them and letting the resource go to waste. In the long run you have to prioritize the local flora and fauna over an invasive species brought over by Englishmen way back when.
