Thrifting to create the old money interior design aesthetic like Ralph Lauren

I am a retired paperhanger, 25 years in the business in Bergen County, NJ. I worked in over a 1000 homes and saw just about every kind of decorating. Hands down, the old money New England esthetic is the most beautiful, rich and warm. In fact, I have decorated my own home that way for years. Nothing broke my heart more when the HGTV contemporary look came in in the early 2000s. We went from wallpaper with beautiful colors and patterns to gray and taupe textured vinyls, lacking any patterns. My older traditional customers used to excitedly say their rooms were beautiful. My younger customers used to say their rooms looked "awesome." It was depressing. The whole historic American style has been replaced with contemporary, retro junk, thanks to HGTV and the Internet. Thankfully, the younger generations are starting to wise up.

I stopped watching HGTV because the channel embraced an aesthetic that I find uninspiring, sterile, and unwelcoming. i also stopped buying the magazine, "Traditional Home" because it started embracing "updated" trends that did not speak to me.

We used to live in a FL condo. Every unit was gray and white. It was like living in a medical office. We saw the phase of no dining rooms, no pretty china, all about lazy comfort from Amazon.

Oh Linda. This video was excellent. Your videos always bring me so much joy. I’m 76 years old I have been struggling with many health issues over the last year. I am recovering from surgery now and I’m feeling really good and this video all of a sudden got me excited to get my mothers beautiful Haviland china down and invite some of my friends over for lunch. My daughter and son and daughter-in-law were thrilled to receive furniture that belonged to their grandparents and even great-grandparents. The older furniture is made better and lasts. Well, obviously, it lasts. My children also realize that they are saving so much money by accepting pre-loved family treasures.

My daughter was given a Queen Anne bedroom set; very high-quality, but probably not what a 20-something young woman might choose. But she used Bombay Company-style linens and pictures on the wall-yes, Indian elephants-and also a couple of lamps that you would have found at the Bombay Company too. it looks wonderfully contemporary! I almost started laughing when I walked in the room! It just looks wonderful! Adding Bombay Company touches to older style furniture might be a neat way for some of you younger people to make those furniture styles work.

I still have a few items from them: ⚜️ A cream faux fur-trimmed tree skirt ⚜️ An oval jewelry box where the lid doubles as a picture frame ⚜️ A tall rectangular mirror I still love & enjoy these quality items. I wish I had bought more when they were open.

My condo is like this. Filled with furniture I've had for decades, some pieces inherited from family, decor items that are inherited, some from world travels, art from family members, inherited silver & brass. It feels elegant & comfortable. Those who visit always compliment my home & find things each time that catch their eye. Glad I still have these precious treasures around me to keep memories of family bright in my mind, as they are forever in my heart.

Linda...love this post. I had a screened in porch added to my home. I needed to get new cushions for my beautiful wicker. When I went to a store to see about fabrics they assumed since it was for a screened in porch I wanted botanical, palm trees, beachy fabric. I live in Tennessee surrounded by mountains, yes near a lake, but nothing beachy. I asked Why would I want cushions that belong in Florida?? They said thats what has been popular. Well, not with me. She asked me a few questions about my style and what I was going for...in a minute she brought out a fabric book of...guess what? Ralph Lauren!!! It probably helped that I had an RL blouse on. And thats what I picked...Ralph Lauren, beautiful, classic fabric cushions. That was in 2006 and they are still beautuful, classic, and have held the test of time. They were not cheap..but here it is, 2024 and still in use. Its not old money as you are talking about, but it looks like it. They will never go out of style..and I always get compliments. ❤

This discovery is delightful. I’m an Olde English Southern Grt. Grandmother. My home is “Colonial”. Seeing items like crystals brought a giggle. (The drops can go on a Christmas tree.) Items may go home with visiting progeny. (Engraved English silver flatware went home with the new bride, whose first name was the Same) One Holiday I gave away all my fathers hats and how-to books. Things are signed underneath and spoken for. A sixth new generation will share in contents and stories. Each generation grew up with many of the same things that I did. The joy is in sharing and giving.

Love the old money aesthetic. I decorated my forever home in that style when we moved here in 1985. I was thrilled to move on from my Primitive clutter. In '85 there were very few vendors importing European antiques, so I was forced to go slow. I didn't inherit anything I could use from my mother. She never bought an antique in her life, though her furniture was top of the line 1960s matchy, matchy suites. After a few yrs I realized that our family and friends were uncomfortable in our home. My style of interior decoration was a distraction. It was really difficult for me, but I "edited" over a period of a few yrs and finally got it right. I enjoyed feeling like Cinderella, but most of the people who knocked on my front door were not dressed appropriately for a ball. I love a collected look. ♡ I have no decorating budget (no money, old or new!) but my 1925 house has a cozy vintage aesthetic and I have found wonderful things thrifting, at rummage sales, and even roadside finds. I love books and they are everywhere (well stocked bookshelves add interest to a large wall, much like wallpaper).

Thanks for making this video. Our ancestors whether they were rich or poor had this way of living. Family heirlooms were past down and kept. Now when someone passes their stuff is thrown away or donated. It is not what people today want in their homes. Sad. My middle class family decorated this way and so do I. I treasure some of the things that were my mom's and grandmothers. I have all of their antiques and paintings. All of the glassware and dishes too. However I do like to mix in classic comfortable soft furniture like couches and chairs. We do use our fine china as much as we can too.

What I love about buying these older, antique items is that most were not made in China (unless they are the REALLY old items). Most of the decorative items in my home are pre-1970 American made items, many purchased on eBay. My most cherished item is a Philadelphia Windsor chair made by a man in Alabama, who had to close shop because of the knock-off chairs coming from China at a cheaper price. That has to change.

Husband and I live in NE Ohio. Before covid, we discovered auctions & estate sales. We replaced ALL of our furniture with solid wood antiques!!! The most expensive piece is a solid black walnut dresser with hand carved pulls ❤❤❤ Unfortunately since covid, auctions arent what they were but we still hit 1 every other month. Furniture is going for more but still affordable, in my opinion. Always fun hunting! I'm looking for a big piece for my bathroom storage. ❤❤❤

I start my decor schemes with a rug or other patterned item I really love. Solid-color items or finishes like paint, wood finishes and plain fabrics, etc., are much easier to “match” to an extant pattern than to find that perfect rug, or other patterned item, that works with everything else already in a room. A large painting, decoratively painted furniture, etc. that one loves can also be used as a starting point for a decor scheme.

Hi Linda! This segment is delightful and definitely reflects an elegant style which is comfortable and desirable to many of us. I try not to buy made in China items unless they are seasonal decorative pieces. Solid wood pieces are quality, lifelong items and an investment. We may not live in elegant mansions; yet our homes can replicate fine living. For those whose family do not appreciate these things, I would say that they need to cherish, use and enjoy what they have, and by doing so, they may influence someone to attain the same love. I've had to dispose of my mom's things and unfortunately California was not a good market for her antiques. I shipped a few furniture items, but the cost is prohibitive. Plus we got taken by the estate dealer who seemed so honest. I ended up owing her money even with a library full of leather bound books, etc. Mom had an antique mahogany two-pedestal Sheridan dining table in great condition with 3 leaves and 10 chairs. The antique store didn't even want to talk to me. We ended up donating the set to the local cancer society. I do feel it will come back into style at some point because the quality is so wonderful.

All of these items are stunning. Unfortunately I have found the younger generation does not value nor want these heirlooms. I have viewed numerous KZbin videos on older generations saving their belongings with the goal of passing them down. They advise to sell or donate these same items you are showing as the younger generation does not value them. Instead they value experiences and travel; not collecting things that need dusting and upkeep. I am greatly saddened by this as I have many of the fine items you showcase. I have even spoken to auction houses who will not accept crystal, silver, fine China (if it can’t be put in the dishwasher) as it won’t sell to younger buyers, as no one wants it anymore. I am at a loss of what to do with my fine and well preserved collections. I hate to think after I pass my fine china collections will end up in a thrift store sold for pennies. 😢

This is so true. Just yesterday I went to pick up a 70 piece set of Johnson Bros Old British Castles. It is gorgeous, and an absolute steal. The woman said her daughters didn't want it, and this look of sadness came over her face. They don't want "old stuff". She then brightened up a bit when I assured her that the dishes would be well used and well loved. It's just so sad. I hate to think of my antiques sitting on the side of the road when I die because no one wants them.

My husband and l have been in the antiques business for nearly 50 years! A suggestion: call an antique mall, and tell them what you have for sale. Ask for a list of dealers who are interested in your items. Research them well, so you're knowledgeable about their worth, because unfortunately, some dishonest dealers will try to cheat you. Settle on a compromise: they make money, you make money And be clear that the sale is cash only- NO checks. But don't give your precious things to a thrift shop!

Linda beautiful video. I am 70 now and have had to move from large period home to tiny apartment after a divorce and with health issues downsize again .😢. My Grandmother collected antiques and also my Mom did. I still have some small lovely pieces from them and furniture. Makes me cry to lose what I have when I have to go to Retirement room as my health is poor and it nearly happened a year ago. Treasures. Being fortunate enough to either have an old family home or inherited one, definitly lends itself to Old Money aesthetic. Its not as easy in suburbia to get this feel. I love the RL look, the antiques, tall clocks, patterns, velvets, brass and silver, textures and woods. And of course... books everywhere. I am sure when I die , my only son will sell or give most of it away. It is not his or my daughter in laws style. So be it... I hope I am well enough to gift it to my friends before that time comes. Til then, I am content being surrounded by things that make me happy, give me joy and make my home my sanctuary. Now let me light a candle and pour a glass of wine!

This is my favorite style. My home is a traditional Colonial, although it’s not old. (Built in 1998) My grandmother and my mom were antique lovers and collectors so I have a lot of their beautiful pieces. Looking forward to more on this topic!

Yes, yes, yes. A style that will last through the ages. While others have looked at my home as not trendy, I would rather invest in quality pieces that will last. So many of the things shown are just a mirror of my home. Oil painting with fox hunts, dogs, horses or New England landscapes are my favorites. May have a problem with tall case clocks, toleware, staffordshire dogs, Windsor chairs, rugs too. My color plalate has always been red and blue. Thank you Linda for showcasing this style. And yes, I agreed you can thrift this style too but never got a score like your $25 tall case clock but I’m always looking. It could happen! ❤

I do live in South,I have thought about this for years ,when I was young and we visited friends of my parents,my thoughts were ,why don’t they buy a New dining room table,a new whatever ,I had no idea they were priceless antiques from England,Italy,etc . I grew to love the look ,of buy something of good quality once that you love and keep it forever. Old money is a way of life,not just style.,not Amazon boxes on the porch. It’s also a feeling you get when you enter the house,things are to be used not saved ,not designed but elegant and lived in….leather chairs are soft Ike butter because they were used and you never leave without eating or drinking something …that would be rude.. Trying hard to teach my grandchildren that there are other places to shop other than Pottery Barn and Anthropology 😂 Things in your house should have a story!!!! I think that's the thing-in today's world, people can often afford to choose their own 'style' rather than relying on passed down items. My parents had many lovely pieces of heavy, solid wood furniture and lovely china but honestly it wasn't the style of any of my 4 siblings. It felt burdensome to feel their expectation that we should take all of their items-which was their particular style and not mine. What did I choose when my parents passed away? 2 watering cans that I use weekly, a crucifix from my grandparents' wedding, a statue of the Blessed Mother that sat on my mother's dresser for 52 years, a few other little bits and pieces. I treasure them. I think it's best to understand that our taste may not be our children's taste and that's ok. It doesn't mean they don't value US - they just may not value our taste. My daughter certainly has a very different aesthetic than me. But there are small things that hold fond memories for her and I assume these will be what she will take. And remember, these are things. They are just objects. The love and the memories are the real treasures. They are the legacy that will never pass away. Spend your time acquiring and sharing these treasures with your child and don't worry so much about the other stuff.

@@mariac4602 I do like your perspective. It made me really think. I haven't inherited many things from my grandmother as my mother is still alive. Many things I thought would be passed down to me and/or my siblings has been sold to strangers because of different financial troubles my mother and grandmother have faced along the way. This makes me sad. Also, your point about not wanting to burden your children with your tastes, style and aesthetic, spoke volumes to me. I wouldn't want to make my children feel obligated to accept my things. Just because I've been disappointed that I haven't inherited the nicer things, doesn't mean my children feel that way. This fact just never dawned on me until you mentioned it here. Thank you. I'm sure that at some point in time, the idea about having the finer things will come back into vogue again and will resurge in popularity. I think it may even be slowly beginning to reappear now in what the younger generation is calling, "Grand Millennial Style." I think about the minimalism of the 40's and 50's, which gradually gave way to the excess of the 80's and 90's. It all circles back around in a way, doesn't it? "What is old is new again."

some of the young women in my family would rather buy cheap, readymade , fake factory made in China items than use my cherished 1800's farm antiques, original art and pottery collection...everythin is now gray, white, gray boring reproduction garbage

I have always love the warm, rich, beauty of the old money esthetic but I am from the South and it's a little different but very much the same in it elegance's and charm. Also, sterling silver tea sets can be found on e-bay and if you live in place that have thrift shops, Good Well or Salvation Army stores you can find different pieces of silver or silver plated wear. Such a great video Linda, one of my very favourite homes I like to look at on YT is Kathrine Hepburns very beautiful house when she was alive, very typical of her & NE style. I love antique homes they can look so elegant & cosy, nice idea to ditch the cover jackets of some of your books to give that old style look, I have often thought how nice the undercover is in the lovely browns, greens, reds…. Love this video, grew up in Williamsburg, Va., and lived seeing that daily,it is hard to get to, unless your family passed down some things, but it is the best look, the best homes are the ones that look like their things are older, and have been around and you don't have to keep changing. I should not say it, but I hate the Home Goods look! But I have also bought some of it, go figure!

Oh Linda I know exactly what you mean. When you said we don’t appreciate some of things that we could’ve gotten from our parents big mistake I made when we were selling my mother’s home. She had beautiful furniture furniture that she’s had from when she first got married and we had an estate sale as I said big mistake but your video was wonderful thank you.

My mum tried to persuade me away from taking my grandma’s china. but i persisted😊 every time i take it out i remember grandma. And it is much more delicate than anything produced today. You can feel the difference. I also have my grandma’s and great grandma’s crocheted table runners and table cloths. My sister still looks at me like i am a wierdo 😂

This was lovely. I watched to see if I ticked off the boxes. As I suspected, my tastes reflect a deep love for the traditions of my own family, and I live quality furniture, and beautiful table settings, etc., but the one place I struggle is with the artwork. I don’t want portraits of people I never loved, or paintings of cows and milkmaids. I like more vibrant, and contemporary art. I took measures to go minimalist awhile back, and it just left me sad. Now I’m pulling the heirlooms, and gathered items back into my home, and trying to strike a balance with old and new combined. It’s a real tightrope walk! I’ll subscribe to your channel to see if there’s anything I can glean from you. By the way, my family is from the Pacific Northwest, yet had a keen interest in these things. Maybe it was because of their Kentucky roots??

RL many years ago simply appropriated old english country house style that has been around forever and put his own twist on it in a distinctly American way. IMO prefer to the english traditional style as it manages to mix and match items gathered over long periods of time and bring them together in a cohesive way that RL never seems to manage.
