With so much husband-bashing going on today, it was refreshing to hear you speak so highly of your husband. My husband encourages my constant decor changes, thrift stores jaunts, and crafting ventures so I’m with you. I agree, that frame was stunning! Great thrifts and upcycles!

Dear Cherry. As I am German I can tell you about the small book that you found. Yes it is German, written in a very old scriptart. The first page at 1:19 says: "Christ - our salvation - complete prayer book for Catholics" I also love old books. You have made a great find! ❤ Greetings from Germany, 😊

@@CanterburyCottageI bought an old bible from 1870 last year. It is a very much used piece. I love to imagine how many people have read in it an found peace with it (although I am not religious). But it even existed during the war Germany against France that ended in 1871 and in World War I and II. It is so special to me to have such an old piece.

We just love the “husband” stories and how he spoils you, so moving the fireplace seems just right! I am sure you sometimes think about the piece you left behind, I once passed up an Art Nouveau type fairy figure lamp base! Your video brought it to mind! I also had my all time favorite lamp broken at a family party, they bought a beautiful cut glass one to replace it! I couldn’t tell them I didn’t want it, but lived with it for a few years! Blessed days!

It is written in Einsiedeln a place in Switzerland with a very important Benedictine Monastery. Greatings from Germany. I have always loved the Fragonard painting, The Swing, despite it's scandalous story. What a nice gift from your husband. My parents and my aunt and uncle had that same vintage sewing/magazine basket. I remember an eagle was attached to it. Those kinds of "early Americana" items along with pewter and primitive ware were popular during the 1976 Bicentennial. It is all showing a resurgence again, as we draw closer to the Semiquincentennial in 2026.
@CanterburyCottage
@CanterburyCottage 23 күн бұрын
Hello, Jacqueline! Mine has the “shadow” where the eagle was once attached-someone must have removed it. As a little girl, I remember what a huge deal the bicentennial was. I don’t know the story behind “The Swing,” but I will be looking it up right now!

What a sweet and attentive hubby you have! The picture is stunning. I was thinking about your wooden sewing box/magazine holder with three legs that maybe it just needs dully down a little. I think the golden banding is quite bright and modern looking compared to the dark wood. Maybe some general scruffing up of the whole piece would be enough, rather than fully painting it? Every time I catch a glimpse of your fireplace tiles, my heart sings! Still can't believe the images are just decoupaged on. Fabulous!

16:15 Your Delft Blue gin bottle hails from a famous Amsterdam Café called 'Hoppe'. Hoppe is amongst one of the oldest cafés in Amsterdam, located on 'Spui' square in the heart of Amsterdam since 1670. This icon started as a Distillery complete with its own "tasting hall" (which became the café). Because of its precious historical significance this magnificent old café retained and displays their ancient barrels and old vats, from its original days, by lining their walls with them. They have a beautiful Renaissance reproduction painting on the wall, inside, which is actually a recreation of an old advertisement - dating back many many years. This café is essential divided in two, the “standing” Hoppe for the menfolk and the “sitting” Hoppe for the ladies, which is how things were arranged around 1900. Now of course everyone is free to mingle. One of our (many Dutch) political Parties was formed there called: the D’66 Party. (Democratic/Liberal) And our now abdicated/former elderly Queen Beatrix visited there, incognito, when as a young princess, she once went out fundraising, in Amsterdam, with Legendary (for us Dutch) Salvation Army’s Major Bosshardt. Brewing magnate Freddy 'Heineken' was a real regular. And 'Newsweek' Magazine once voted this to be 1 of the 10 best bars IN THE WORLD!

I find antiques, vintage, brass for great prices, ppl travel from all over to set up their wares along with the home owners. A lot of ppl rent out their yards/spaces for them. Literally sales everywhere. I have a fantastic husband too & he takes off work on a Friday (when they officially start & goes thru to Sunday) to drive me around. He’s a trooper going to antique stores, estate sales, garage sales with me. But then I do the things he likes too which is getting out in our Ford Bronco & hitting up the trails. I’m so sorry about your plate Sherry!! I’ve had something similar happen to me. Well, as far as a broken plate. No lie, this happened to me. I had a beautiful set of Native American plates hung on my wall. My son who was three had a new friend over and they got a ball and right after I said, “don’t kick that in the house you might break my plates.” That’s exactly what happened!! It’s a terrible feeling. But you were right, you can barely tell. I enjoyed the video. I too like wooden boxes. Have a few myself. See ya next time. ❤️💜💚

I love the book cover you put in the frame. And the picture you put on top of it made it look so much better. My husband collects old books. He likes to find first editions. But I live in a small house. And I’ve run out of room for things sitting places. So now I try to buy things I can hang on my walls. We have lived here four years and I don’t have anything hanging on any of the bedroom walls. I do have a picture my husband bought at an estate sale to hang in our bedroom. I just can’t decide where I want to put it. I want to rearrange my bedroom first. My husband just gave me an old box he got from Goodwill, I think. It’s sitting on my coffee table in my living room. I’m not sure if it will stay there. But it’s there for now. We go to an antique mall near our house. We haven’t been for a while. But I will get there soon. I bought a green box that says Kingston Coffee on it. The city I live in is Kingston. And it was on sale so I got a great deal too.

That last random brass light bottom, buy or thrift Christmas tree greens and stand them in the hole so the brass item ends up looking like a tree stand. Target often has these greens in the dollar section over Christmas and it's just in a cheap container that you can easily pull off he bottom

I bought a set of 1915 World Book of Knowledge for $5. There’s about 18 books and in excellent condition. My kids loved them. Thanks for the great ideas. I don’t ever get to thrift stores but I do go to my favorite antique shop occasionally. Last time I splurged and bought a flowered tray for $60. Before that I bought some ceramic 1940’s birds for $4 & $5. Sometimes the cheaper things make me happier.

My heart sank when you dropped the Dutch plate. I have a fondness for that kind of plate, my first one was actually accidental. Long story short, I was in the Army stationed in Germany, I took a trip to Holland, and I did buy a plate for a family member, but on our way home the tour guide had a beautiful floral trimmed plate with the typical windmill scene, she said it was to be a prize for whoever had the right answer to her question. The question was, what color is yaks milk, everyone had exhausted the answers, and the guy beside me said no one said pink, so I said pink and won the plate, I have had it since 1982. I guess the lesson learned for you is always put the hanger on the plate over a table, also when you glue it, with hands on both sides apply some pressure for a minute or two, then the crack will be even less noticeable, I have had a few accidents myself.

That’s a fun story, and who knew yak milk is pink! It doesn’t help that I have stone floors, so if something drops, it always breaks! (I actually did put pressure on both sides of the plate while the glue dried; it was off camera though.)

I called out loud; 'Oh nooo! 😐 And came to the comments with the same exact advise...doing jobs like these while sitting down at a table. Because of my MS I was dropping all kinds of things and am trying to become more careful✌🏻😏.
