Thrilling Cockpit Footage - Two Modern Gliders Racing in the Mountains

Two high performance gliders (sailplanes) race head to head just feet above the rocky ridges of the amazing Logan, Utah mountains often at speeds over 150 mph! Both are loaded with water to get the maximum glide performance and they fly right up to the aircraft's structural load limits in the turbulent mountain air. Watch to see which one wins and how the big performance really is between the smaller 15 meter ASW27 compared with the amazing newer 18 meter ASW29. Thanks so much for watching and to Sandy flying 2XX with me that day. I look forward to seeing your feedback and comments! Bruno - B4

Nice flight, so beautiful! It’s amazing to me the faith you need to fly there, knowing the ridge thermals will support your entire flight! I don’t think I could handle that. I bet you have many hours of experience from which you have learned how to mitigate the risks of ridge flying, otherwise I don’t think that you would have flown there. I myself would want one of those gliders that has a prop in the nose that can pop out when needed. Granted, those are pretty expensive, but I think that would be the only way that I could glide where you went. I’m not a pilot yet, but working on getting my license, even though I do already have my sUAS pilot license. This last summer we took a trip to Utah, Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, and purposely drove through Logan and the mountains there, as your videos reminded me about the beauty there. I’d seen them before, but it had been 30+ years since. We also stayed in Afton at the Kodiak Mountain Retreat log houses, and it was beautiful! There’s a farm there that has the best ice cream, too! There is an airport, but I am not sure if it supports gliders or not. Once I get my pilot license, I really want to fly up there for a weekend. (We’re from San Francisco, so good long flight{s}) I’ve had one question for you since I first saw your videos, which was: I think your sailplane is a single seater, and if so, does it get lonely up there sometime? I would want to share the actual flights with someone special each flight, but I also understand that two-seaters are more expensive, too. Thus your videos, I’m guessing.
@BrunoVassel
@BrunoVassel 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching and for sharing your experiences. How cool that you were able to see some of the places where I love to fly. They are pretty amazing even from the ground. I fly a single seater because they are so much more nimble on the ground and in the air. Two seaters are huge and are a lot more work to move around and to keep in a hangar. Also, it isn't always easy to find a willing passenger every time you fly. Flying two seaters are like flying large SUV's compared with flying a sports car. Yes, they still have some good glide performance, but turning and moving them around the sky is no where as thoughtless as with a nimble single seater. Some day I may also own a two seater, but for now, I am very happy with bringing you along via video. Cheers!

It glider an endorsement of a pilot certificate or what. How different is it to fly a glider than a powered aircraft and a powered glider?
@johnopalko5223
@johnopalko5223 4 жыл бұрын
In the U.S. glider is a separate category rating on your certificate. I don't know about other nations. I think motor gliders are considered airplanes, but don't quote me on that. Flying gliders isn't very different from flying airplanes. The aerodynamics are the same. Since you don't have an engine to get you home, you have to do a lot of planning with respect to thermals, ridge lift, etc., and make sure you can make it to a safe landing spot. Off-airport landings are pretty much par for the course. I think every airplane pilot should get a glider rating. Flying gliders makes you a better pilot, I think. Plus, most gliders are certificated for spins, so you can have a lot of fun going out and practicing recovery from fully developed spins.

Can someone explain if these gliders can generate their own lift? And if yes, then why aren't they just called planes?
@tomkfly
@tomkfly 4 жыл бұрын
Farzana Patel No! They are towed up by a powered plane, winch or even occasionally by a car. They then use rising air to gain altitude. The rising air can be generated by the heat of the Sun (thermals) or wind hitting a ridge and and being forced upwards (ridge or hill lift ). Wind hitting a mountain range will usually form a wave in the air behind the mountains and this can be very powerful and smooth lift (wave lift), Waves can stretch for quite a distance beyond the mountains. At the tops of each wave a lenticular cloud usually forms and these can be seen from the ground. Lift is generated by the glider producing forward speed by descending through the air. If the air is rising faster than the gliders rate of decent the the glider will gain altitude. An alternative and more correct name for this type of glider is Sailplane.
