Ben Shelton has his whole career ahead of him, but for someone so skilled at his young age it's worrisome to see his return games being so consistently weak against opponents ranked near or above him with little visible progress during the season so far. With a few rare exceptions, his service games are perfectly mapped out and strategized, helped by his awesome serve, but his return games appear very random. He had one excellent return game against Fritz in the first set where he appeared to play purely by instinct, and a couple of good return points against Giron in Delray Beach, but Rune lost a single point on serve in the last two sets against Ben at Acapulco. Most of Ben's return points are either played very passively or with high-risk power shots landing all over the stadium. Ben said yesterday Nadal was his model, so he needs to play every return game point as if his life depended on it, like Nadal at his age. Hope his coach(es) have him focus on this aspect, as with a reasonable return game he could easily become the Sampras of our era, instead of a less solid tie-breaker specialist than Isner (no disrespect to all that Isner has accomplished intended).
@leonardobraynen1524 Жыл бұрын
Great analysis; At Nadal's age, Rafa had an Uncle Tony who nurtured his talent and told him his mistakes, not coddled entitlement. Ben needs someone to tell him he's not that great yet and have a lot to work on to be a champion. He has the raw tools but need experience and a champion's mindset. Well said.
@gto6254 Жыл бұрын
@@leonardobraynen1524 Thanks. I would not go as far as blaming it on coddled entitlement as Ben clearly works very hard to prepare for games and is very disciplined (one of the reasons he said yesterday that he enjoys entertaining crowds but his model is not Kyrgios). However, at his age (and still now), Nadal absolutely hated to lose, it caused him mental pain. Ben is still in the phase that even if he loses he had a lot of fun, the opponent was just too good, and thinks he will have better luck next time. I think his amazing serve may be getting him stuck in that mentality as it is the primary factor that propelled him from 551 to 39 rank in less than a year, but he now needs all his other skills and more to keep progressing. So yes, he absolutely needs the coaching of an uncle Tony to make him recognize and work on his weaknesses and reach his full potential, like Nadal did his whole career. Wimbledon will be a good test of how quickly he can develop.
