I can see why VRC's devs would want to release it on mobile. It makes sense as a business and it will undoubtedly bring more users onto the platform. That being said, It will certainly bring more minors onto the platform which, let's be honest, is a huge problem in itself. It also is making me worry that they will continue to ramp up avatar restrictions to fit the wider audience, making what was a platform that pushed the envelope into an oasis of low-poly anime avatars.

So VRChat mobile has really been on my mind recently. Honestly I have very mixed feelings. The good: I like the idea that I could use VRChat on the go, hang out with online friends on a long trip or walk. I also feel like it would make it a lot easier for people who sleep in VRChat to do so, since you can just have some earbuds in and your phone right next to you. The Bad (and why I'm so worried): There's the running joke on VRChat, "Christmas is coming up, time for a new wave of kids who just got Quests 2's to join." Now, every kid between the age of 6-14 with a tablet or mum/dads/their own phone joins the game, with probably the worst mic quality you have ever heard. We will also have an issue of more underage people on the game, causing all kinds of controversy but on a much larger and more mainstream scale (probably to the point of news coverage). The way I see this working out well is having dedicated phone lobbies, as well as mixed ones or paywall/account experience wall (you need plus or need to be a known user to join via phone). Obviously, I want this to turn out well, but since I spend a lot of time in public lobbies, I know how easily this could end terribly.

There are already projects that let you prompt a VR environment. The ones I've seen were glorified skyboxes... but there's so many pieces of the puzzle coming together _very_ quickly. I've also seen plugins that can apply a height/depth-map to a stable diffusion image that can then be imported into blender and converted into a semi-3D scene.

VR Chat coming to mobile is probably gonna be more or less divisive to current users, but I think generally getting it to work on the platform just secures its hold as a true "Metaverse" even further. If you wanna hop in to chat with your friends but you don't have your HMD with you, you're not left out of the social circle that you're craving interaction with. What would be really cool is if they configured it to work via phone VR later on, wherein you then control yourself with a bluetooth controller. Tons of people get scammed into buying a phone VR headset anyway, so if they could capitalize on at least one app that's useful on that platform, it could be kind of cool to see. Reducing the barrier to entry for VR Chat is a win for everyone, as people might explore it on mobile and get a cool idea of what VR is actually like when they see people truly moving around inside it. Honestly, mobile VR would be very easy to implement. All you need is controller support & googles android VR gyro controll sdk. You wont have 6DoF, but its VERY possible.

Very interesting to hear about VR chat mobile. I wonder if it will allow a google cardboard mode since it will work on android? I was sorta expecting an android version ever since VRchat released on quest. I figured the conversion of the quest app to android should be rather minimal effort. Perhaps they were just waiting for the phone hardware to catch up a little bit more. About a year ago I was able to get VR chat working in desktop mode on my phone however it required another PC & steam link or google remote desktop app to run successfully. I believe the steam link method no longer works for some odd reason. regardless can't wait to see it for myself or covered here when it comes out!

@@Akab true, but you don't need google cardboard SDK to get VR to work on android. You simply need to split the screen into two separate renders or use the duplicate and offset method. Then you track the camera to the gyroscope. etc. People were making phone VR on android for about 2 years before google cardboard myself included. Also should mention the quest 2 is running AOSP.

I think it's best to think of AI as a tool more than a job replacement. It's more likely that professional artists using AI will outperform professional artists who don't. Since you are IN it when something like say the motion controls are bad or how you move is bad or if your in game body doesn't mesh well with your real life one it's jarring. And it can genuinely make some people feel sick and nauseous. People can and (stupidly) do play REALLY bad games but when that bad game makes you wanna vomit then even the dumbest consumer would have to put it down. I notice the flaws in a game and it's pros much more in VR. details I'd miss in a flat screen game are suddenly in my face screaming "look at me" and glitches that would irritate or even humor someone like falling through the map or getting stuck in geometry can be visually jarring.

Seeing how well the tracking works with cameras in the device (quest pro controllers and new vive trackers) I really hope that this is all good enough that we can get rid of the base stations. Sure the controllers and trackers are probably a bit more expensive this way, but I'd rather have that than pay extra for a loud motor spinning some infrared LEDs around.

Honestly that is what kept me from making the index my first VR headset. Having to have a big enough room for two towers and positioning them just right just to have tracking sounds god awful. Not to mention you have to PAY for them obviously so it contributed to the index having that crazy 1k cost. It could've been cut down a lot if it had inside out tracking like the quest letting us ditch the base stations. Self tracked like the quest pro controllers are the future. So is inside out tracking. Playing a PCVR wirelessly or quest native game with pro controllers is so freeing. No wire to keep harassing me rubbing up against me all the time, no rings on the controller to smash into each other and make things like reloading in some games awkward. And I can reach behind my head and back and never lose tracking. Only thing limiting me from always playing wireless is connectivity problems. But once it advances enough we're we can get or get near wired performance but wireless no one will want none inside out tracking wired only headsets like the index.

Well, I just caught up on the past 10 months of VR news from this channel over the past few days. Lots of exciting stuff going on in the industry. I'm hoping for affordable full-body tracking, as I'd love to try them myself. Lots of new headsets, some providing genuine competiton to the Quest. Advancements in mixed reality, which is cool too. I may just upgrade to the Quest 3, since I am still using the 1, but I hope someone else comes along and offers something comparable or better. ByteDance isn't any better than Meta for privacy realitically. Maybe Valve will finally release their standalone?

I'm a fullbody index user but I'm excited for this mobile update because if I'm ever away from home and unable to use my pc setup I can still log in and visit friends and hang out. Yeah it won't be as good but it is still another way to connect with my friends that's not through discord. The only scary things is the children getting it -_- I like that I heard it's going to start for VRC+ first so that cuts out almost all the children for the beginning of this launch. I have an old nightly version of bmbf installed on my quest 2 with beat saber 1.17.1 and it still works after the v51 update, everything from the app itself and the game are working, I play beat saber on Pc, but idk why it’s still working on quest standalone

Logically speaking I doubt it. When you're using flat screen, your quest OS is basically just running a display, controllers, and their directions/positioning, not running the game itself

I work at a Walmart and we have the PSVR 2 but no one has been buying it due to price and a lot of stores already sell the quest 2 for somewhat of the same price but has more adaptability with devices and has more games.

I feel like the whole phone vr thing would blow up industry for slimmer headsets but here are mannnny concerns with this. - Affording a nice phone. Not everyone can afford to buy a pretty snazzy nice phone, especially android because the prices. - Android phones that can handle gaming. There aren't alot in software side that can handle that unless your paying well over your own budget. - Software Side would have to be really decent, something like the Samsung Galaxy S8's and 9's unless there is better. - Battery life/usage Battery usage for games, and storage amount would have to be up there. - Battery life/usage The other concern is, phones naturally already get pretty warm, even with games. Due to other program files already in the phones normal data, and files and such, as-well as pictures, Video's, etc. - Sound wise speakers for androids are pretty loud already, so I wouldn't use headphones. - Limitations Will there be a limitation to what kind of phone will be able to run it?, say if its not just brought to android. will it only be gaming phones? because that would probably be something, not everyone has. - Steam and limitations with mobile Steam will likely not work on mobile devices so it is a huge grey area, Say android cant handle it, bring it to steam deck instead? - Reputation ( Vrchat has a bad over all history.) Say, if it is the VRChat plus... which they lost alot of there vrchat+ members thanks to Eac. it wouldn't look very good for reputation they have. - SAFETY (HUGE Concerns) More stressing concerns are a bigger and more scary problem, with how VRChat operates today.. The amount of kids already, And adults, & everyday of Mingling with 15-19 year old's unless your over 21 already. I don't think anyone really understands the safety and what kind of people your letting into you & or your child's life. There are already instances where minors have been kidnapped, and beyond worse... told to meet up because people want to manipulate. plenty of these cases are already well known, especially the 18+ side of VRChat. There are every type of world, and there would need to be a bar set or limits set. There are already plenty of issues on vr in itself, as there's news reports that also get covered every once in a blue moon, of some unhappy kid, doing something dangerous. I don't think you want to introduce 50-80 years of age on a platform where they shouldn't be. We already have Media, Leave it alone. I think this would cause a huge mass of safety problems, that Vrchat's team has yet to even take care of, let alone, banning any reporter or news outlet that tries to cover the Vr-verse. I don't think we need more platforms being introduced to phone software that are not ready for it. Not having enough vr studies, Industry and Research to come out with something that would run smoothly for for phone, especially given storage for a phone and cache. My god..

I think on VR it's way easier to tell if a game is shit then on any other platform due to the transparency of the windows into whatever game you are playing. With a mobile game you have a small screen, with a desktop game you have the monitor which you can hide behind; but with a VR headset you are in it. (Giving the right circumstances and being around the block a few times, desktop games can also have red flags but we have also seen that there is beauty in lower graphics like retro horror.)

It makes perfect sense why better quality games i.e games that are actually GOOD would matter much more in the VR world than flat screen gaming world. I feel in VR a bad game is VERY noticable. You cannot deny it. Since you are IN it when something like say the motion controls are bad or how you move is bad or if your in game body doesn't mesh well with your real life one it's jarring. And it can genuinely make some people feel sick and nauseous. People can and (stupidly) do play REALLY bad games but when that bad game makes you wanna vomit then even the dumbest consumer would have to put it down. I notice the flaws in a game and it's pros much more in VR. details I'd miss in a flat screen game are suddenly in my face screaming "look at me" and glitches that would irritate or even humor someone like falling through the map or getting stuck in geometry can be visually jarring. And what was once "wow this sucks" or just "haha funny bug" is "OH MY GOD WHAT IS GOING ON WITH MY EYES I SEE THE VOID I THINK IM HAVING A STROKE". So easy to see why a terrible VR game would die MUCH harder than a terrible flat screen game.

I hope that VRChat mobile is gonna use the face tracking capabilities that a lot of mobile phones possess and have an option for at least 3DOF tracking on your phone so that you don’t have to swipe to look around and have a more natural option which also frees up your right thumb

Face tracking doesn't work in vrc with the quest pro if the avatar itself doesn't have tracking, most you'll get is eye tracking

I swear, the first AR "game" that links your calendar app, can analyze, remember, and later highlight important items in the real world, and overlays a simple first person HUD to my real world, and can then use AI to generate "quests" for you to complete as you go through your day, pushing you to complete chores and get to major events on your calendar on time, and giving you experience points for it will become the selling feature for the blend of AI and AR.

Anyone else who came here for the vrchat update probably didn't read further into it and what thrill forgot to say was is that vrchat on mobile for the first three or four months I think I don't remember exactly will only be available to those with vrchat plus and then after that it will still be another few months before it comes up to everyone so it will probably be 2024 before its public which means you will have to buy vrchat plus to use it

it's important to ask is it "absolute" or "relative" quality. If we're talking absolute quality we'll watch as every year another set of solid games drop with revenue to launch studios. But the more likely case is that relative quality drives sales. That as we increase quality those who sit at the top of that quality will benefit with the most sales and the same portion of games will be profitable. Time will tell.
