Throttle Cable Adjustment - Project Integra

Mechanical throttle cables can get loose overtime on cars. In this video I'll tighten the throttle cable on my 1999 Acura Integra. It's a very quick, easy adjustment, and can remove dead band from your gas pedal, where you press the pedal but it has no influence on the throttle control. So long as the cable is not super loose, you should still be able to reach WOT, and thus this should not affect performance, but it's nice to have the gas pedal immediately respond.

Don't tighten it too much. I ended up hitting a bump in the road which made the throttle cable stuck which caused my engine to nonstop idle at 4k. FIxed it by loosening it.

There have been a few comments about getting back to the type of videos "we" want to see here, as with this video. Me personally, I like the videos where I actually learn something new, or get to see something that I otherwise would not...which occurs in almost every video you make! How things work, and the comparisons of one type engine or transmission etc., to another is important to many of us. Even the reviews are good and informative. But I guess there are some people who are only interested in a very narrow mechanical spectrum. Trust me, there are lots of us who are interested in the full range of things you bring us! :)

Great to hear, because full spectrum is what I plan on doing! So long as something can be learned, I believe it's worthwhile.

A good DIY video addressing this issue was LONG over due. This is probably one of the best/easiest completely free "mods" that can increase throttle response and the cars overall performance.

This is a great service item that is often overlooked! Makes a huge difference to customers as the car feels a lot more responsive and makes them less resentive of paying for an oil change which usually has no "seat of the pants" short term improvement to the driver.

This is an awesome video. I never knew how to do this, and I have a 1994 Integra. So I'll be checking the throttle cable this weekend. Keep making these How To videos! Also I love the instant response that the Integra gas pedal has vs. all the new cars with Drive by Wire. Not to mention it has the most precise steering feel of any car I have driven.

Thank you! I have my dad's 1987 Nissan Maxima Wagon and a shop brought it back to life. It was misfiring, dying at low idle, and had a lot of hesitation when pressing down the accelerator pedal down firmly. They replaced the mass air sensor. Found the #5 injector to be constantly stuck open. Found 3 vacuum leaks and replaced the intake plenum gasket. However, they could no longer find the idle air control valve for the car. The one on the car had adjusting screws that were stuck and could not be adjusted at all. After all of the repairs were made, the car idled around 1400 rpm. The created a smal bock plate in the IAC valve to lower the idle to around 650 rpm. However, to keep the car from idling too low, they adjusted the accelerator cable so that the butterfly can stay opened slightly. Unfortunately, the car idles too low when i turn the AC on. The car was in this awesome repair shop for 3 weeks. Instead of going back to have the mechanic slightly open the butterfly a tiny bit more, so that the car idles just a bit higher with the AC on, I will do the adjustment myself. I know that the trade off is slightly higher gasoline consumption.

I know about the subaru turbo lag. Best thing i did was an Electronic boost control solenoid from grimmspeed. pretty much zero lag. even though you have to tune for it. its was very tasteful. especially if you keep the same power. it feel different just bc it comes on strong. But like you said that would void the warranty. But the hatch you bought is beautiful and i hope you keep it for many many years :)

Hi, love your vids. I was wondering if you could do a video on 5 valve per cylinder heads (Yamaha, Audi etc)? How do the camshafts achieve this? Do they have the same/less/more cam lobes? How do they get a 5 valve system in such small motors (motorcycles)? Why don't we see more often? Perhaps you could do 3 valve systems in the same video? Thanks

Hope my experience helps others woth their tinkering: I have a 2006 Honda Accord and used your video to lessen the empty take up in my accelerator pedal. Though the take up was removed, it left my idle RPM very high (cold start: 2000rpm at park, 1300 at drive) It appears the metal arm (see 1:30 timestamp) on my vehicle that is nestled between both the bolts is slightly warped, which affects the cable tension. I can choose to replace it (which may fix the problem) or leave the 2cm of pedal give alone

It was a little over an inch wide..now I have a very slack throttle cable that I can't seem get adjusted properly...the problem is my idle is too low...a little over 500...is there any way to adjust the travel from the inside where the cable connects to the pedal? Hi EE, I was wondering does the spring in the throttle directly provide the back pressure in the gas paddle? I.e. the force to lift it back up. If so, I think a slightly increased spring pressure would allow finer control of the gas. But I think I shouldn't overdo it so my right leg is happy too. I would appreciate your comment on this.

My throttle cable on a 99 Celica looked and felt like it had some slack, I adjusted it and it seemed not too tight but it idled at around 1200 after.. I slowly let it back loose a few times checking the idle each time. Finally I got it to 800rpm and the throttle response feels very good, but when looking and touching the cable, it seems to have just a little slack in it. Seems odd, but I guess that's just where it is happy at.

I did the same thing ones in a 98 honda civic. And from driving point of view, i don't like the result. So, i switch back. After this adjustment, gas pedal do not touch the floor if you press hard. It resulting in high tension in throttle cable. When driving slowly, you should operate the throttle with pedal which is closer to the driver - it is uncomfortable. Slack is less evil.

Some people say that when coming to a stop (in second gear for example), putting the car in neutral (making the engine idle) and pressing the break does not increase gas mileage, compared to coasting in the gear and only going into neutral right before stopping. At first i was convinced neutral would be the better option as the engine is running slower therefore burning less fuel, but this is argued against. Good video topic maybe? :)
@Beer_Dad1975

I've had this discussion with a few mechanics, engineers and armchair experts over the years. I'm told on a modern vehicle you will use less fuel engine braking because the ECU will cut fuel to the engine - however one mechanic pointed out that since brake components are cheap and the fuel you save is minimal, and transmissions and drive line components are expensive and engine braking ads wear and tear to them, it might work out cheaper long term not to engine brake. Nobody was able to provide any hard evidence either way though.
@MatMli
@MatMli 9 жыл бұрын
This might be a stupid question since the car probably has a rev limiter, but could you remove some of the metal that stops the throttle from going further and get more performance from the engine? I know the engine probably isn't that efficient at higher revs so you wouldn't gain a lot.
