Throttle cable: 30 to 60 minutes ($50 / $165 / $225)
In this video I replaced a throttle cable on a 1998 Volvo S70 GLT. The process should be the same on all of the 850, V70, S70 vehicles between 1993 through 1998. The manual transmission vehicles (PN: 9157600) have a different cable than the auto vehicles (PN: 9157601).

Robert, I have a tip for you on this one! To assist with removing the throttle cable without the need for a helper, once you have cut the insulation, grab a 24mm socket, thread the cable end through the middle, and push it onto the four white clips from the inside where they go through the firewall. The socket will fit snug on the clips and press all four evenly, allowing you to move back under the hood and simply pull the cable through the firewall. Thank you for everything you do, you’re an asset to the Volvo community!

I just tried that method and it worked great! Thank you! The only difference I made was using a 7/8" socket because a 24mm was too big for my 740's throttle cable clips.

To remove the cable from the wall I used a carpet knife to cut the rubber around it from inside the engine bay, then pry bar to pull it out enough to get a zip tie behind it then yanked as I went around it with the pry bar. It came out pretty much whole with a crack in the white snap ring. Driving a 1998 V70 with 250K miles, thanks to you!

Hello Robert and everyone else who wants to change the throttle cable. There is no need to destroy the inner plastic wall that covers the fire barrier. If the thicker part with the 2 pin kick down switch is already broken, simply tear it off the cable. If it ain't broken, break it! Then remove the rubber part with pliers. Then there should only be a black plastic peg in the hole, which is held by the white clips. Pull this out with the pliers. Now you can simply break out the white ring with the holders using pliers and pull out the rest. You also don't need a second person to install the throttle cable. Simply push the wire cable through from the engine compartment, making sure that it comes out behind the accelerator pedal and doesn't slip between the firewall and the plastic wall. Then hook onto the accelerator pedal and push it back. Then again from the engine compartment press the 2 pin kick down switch with the white clips into the hole in the firewall until it clicks. Now all you have to do is hook the cable onto the throttle valve, open it completely and then let it slide back. That's it

Well, I'll try to wrap a thin cable/fishing line from the outside of the firewall between it an the throttle body to tighten the four white feet toghether. Hope it will work. But I guess all of it is on the inside, so it won’t work anyway. So I’ll peel it out from the outside like this one guy in his two videos.

to remove it use a socket and push it out from the inside. To install it just push it and it will snap in.

Ever had your throttle get stuck open? Happened to me in a parking lot today, not sure what caused it, there was nothing near the pedal, and all carpet is also clear from it. It was stuck solid until I jammed the car in park. Wouldn't have done that if I wasn't about to give some poor lady a free ride to the hospital...lol

@@RobertDIY It didnt seem broken, I checked it right after and it returned to normal, but it felt a little tighter than usual, hard to describe but it wasn't smooth like other throttles I've messed with

Maybe it's binding. See how smooth it is with the cable off.

Does the spring on the throttle body have anything to do with making the gas pedal acceleration really stiff because mine sounds like it's really dry and it's creaks and squeaks when I accelerate
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 6 жыл бұрын
The pedal has a hinge pin that may be wearing out. The spring at the throttle body helps it return.

I’ve got a 1997 Volvo 850 non turbo with the 5 speed manual. Is it normal for the throttle to be quite stiff on these cars? Mine is pretty stiff and you have to push it down pretty good before anything happens. It makes giving it the right amount of gas to start off from a stop tricky at times. Heel toe downshifting a challenge as well. I’ve never driven another 850 so I have no way to compare. Mine has 250,000 miles so I wonder if the cable has some slack in it.
