We bought our first large power boat about 5 years ago after 40+ years on sailboats. It was my first experience with dual engine and transmission controls. I hired a delivery captain to move the boat to its new home. Right away I noticed that he cycled through forward, neutral and reverse while at the dock and then prior to approaching each marina. I asked him why and he told a couple of stories about transmission that got stuck in gear with bad consequences. He said I should test all the gears like he did. Of course, I promptly forgot his advice. A year later we departed on the Loop and arrived at the Erie Canal. At the 3rd or 4th lock, a boat came in behind us and all hell broke loose. His transmission stuck in gear and he couldn’t kill his engine. Luckily he missed us but rammed into the front gate. Panicking, he jammed his second engine in reverse and hit a boat on the wall opposite to us. Both boats then banged off the lock wall with significant damage. My SOP now is to cycle through the gears before leaving or entering any dock, lock or marina. Marine transmissions are extremely reliable - until they fail.
@pac-man29072 жыл бұрын
Great advice. I had a similar experience -- after 30 years of sailing -- I am docking my dual diesels and had one of the transmission handles literally come off in my hand, stuck in reverse. In the shock of the moment, it took a good 15-30 seconds to realize that I just needed to kill the engine. It helps to have a defined, written emergency procedure / steps that you work out in advance for certain scenarios, such as: What will you do when an engine gets stuck in gear? What will you do when an engine won't shut off? And the Stop doesn't work? And then the Kill switch doesn't work? The longer I've spent on my powerboat, the more I learn --- and then commit to a written SOP --- because emergencies happen so infrequently, we can't trust our memory when under pressure.

I suppose these things can happen with both electronic and standard throttles. We have kill switches but things happen so fast I imagine I might not be quick enough to prevent an accident in a small marina.

I love Nassau! I have a trip down there with my boss so he can spend a weekend on his yacht coming up in mid November. I would never have electronic controls. The same thing happened in my marina here on Lake Erie. One of my dock neighbors bought a new Tiara and on his second trip out aboard it he came back to the dock and as he was heading into his dock neutral became full speed ahead. He hit the bulkhead and cracked the hull. Needless to say Tiara sent a semi to pick it up and deliver his new boat.

in many many marinas i have seen the fishing boats bring their catch back after a day on the water and clean their fish at the docks throwing all the unwanted parts into the marina. makes it a lot of fun with sharks if you need to scrape your bottom, check your zincs, or - like this guy - do some work after a mishap.

You travel everywhere and you have either 871 or 1271 Detroits. I want to take my 53' Hatteras from N Y to Virginia so I am wondering if the engines have been an issue at all, as the only problems I have seen you bring up are usually non engine related.???
@Prototheria2 жыл бұрын
Hatteras didn't put the 12V's in any MY under 61'. 8V's are the most prevalent under that with a few outliers having 6V's. Some early production 50's and 53's got 8V71N's, but those are few and far between. Sport fish and Yachfish models may be outliers as I've seen a few 48 Yachtfish's with 8V71TI's, and one 58 YF that had 12V71TI's, but I think that may have been a repower at one point. As for your engines, I don't speak from experience, but as long as they start, you should be good. From what I've read, the only real criticality with the Detroits are the tolerances associated with the racks. Get the FSM, spend a couple grand on some quality special tools needed to run the racks, keep the oil and fuel clean, run 'em up once in a while to blow them out, and there's most likely very little you'll ever have to do below the head gaskets.

We have never had engine problems, other then fuel supply issues. We have 8v92s and they are solid. No blue smoke at startup (unless they are cold up north, then just 15 seconds). They are probably the least thing to be worried about on your trip. Brings lots of spare filters, the ocean can churn up a lot of stuff in the fuel tanks. We usually burn through a couple filters in the first two weeks, but that is because we sit for seven months out of the year

What’s a pole shark? That story of his seems kind of fishy 🐠 I find it hard to believe electronic throttle controls are that unreliable, sounds like he was looking for a scape goat 🐐 I also don’t think that was adrenaline causing his weird behavior there, it was too far after the incident. It’s a shame that the electronic controllers took the blame! When installed by a professional they are more reliable than mechanical or hydraulic for that matter. For safety purposes each helm station is also required to have engine kill buttons installed. USCG required for Cert. Maybe a sobriety test would have been a better way to start the diagnosis processes! Funny how there are so many excuses when these type of scary and dangerous events happen. 🫣
