The 2024 BMW i5 M60 xDrive ($113,600 as specced in Canada, $92,450 in the US) is BMW’s first fully electric 5-Series sedan. Over 600 horsepower is on tap when using M Sport Boost mode and it has a predicted EPA range of 412 kilometers. With oodles of power and a sophisticated suspension system, the i5 aims to provide the familiar experience of speed and comfort that one might expect of a 5-Series sedan. But does it achieve its goals? And how different is it now that the drivetrain has been electrified? Thomas and James are excited to find out! We hope you enjoy the episode. And then subscribe, silly.

The worst thing is the buttonless bandwagon BMW has joined. iDrive 8 is an abomination. The 8 shortcut buttons are gone. Climate control buttons are gone. Heated seats and ventilated seats are now have to be turned on / off in software. Manual turning on of low beam headlights and PARKING LIGHTS are in iDrive. Was the turn-style headlight switch too complicated, for BMW? Even the HEATED STEERING WHEEL BUTTON is gone. No one can dispute that having to navigate a software menu to do simple tasks is easier and safer than a switch you can locate and turn on, without looking, by memory. The fact the common sense has been lost around this is totally mind boggling.

Ditto. Their new stuff is aimed at someone other than me, which I find weird having been such a keen BMW customer over the years - I’ve bought tons of them; mostly new, from E46 to Z8 by way of many 5s, 7s and Ms. Couldn’t be bothered with them any more, though I have a couple of 80s and 90s keepers to remind me how fun they used to be.

I never thought BMW would kill the 5-series. I understood (sort of), the experimentation with the 4-series and other models, but I never thought they would take the 5-series out like this. I have absolutely loved my prior 5s, but I do not want this car. Comparing this new 5 to the prior gen's exterior is shocking. I have zero desire to own it. So sad.

My first BMW was a 1991 525i that I bought in 1995 and to this day I'm still emotional about it. The reason is it was the first car I ever had with: leather seats, heated seats, power headrests, a ZF trans, and it handled flawlessly. In the 20 years since I sold it, I can't think of a 5-Series I have ever wanted LESS than this new one...

They have fallen for the short-term money income by putting on everything the M badge. Yeah, they will get fast sales now, but the more it goes, the more the badge will mean nothing and in the future they will stop selling it, but the damage to M will be already made. I think Porsche is the only one really careful with the badging, they are very careful what gets the "GT" badge and thus EVERY "GT" car has a higher resale value, than the sticker price.

Yeah, wrong. There's a reason two of the largest global auto manufacturers haven't really bought off on EVs. They see the writing in the wall. Toyoda was right. There are tons of unsold EVs sitting in car lots. Supply has far exceeded demand. And that's a fact. There's nothing wrong with having EVs or people that prefer EVs. But they are simply not the solution that many people hoped they would be. Plus there is that little issue of slaves in the African Congo mining Cobalt and then shipping it across vast oceans in giant cargo vessels powered by fossil fuels...

There are certain design canons - in a world of any sports sedan family - but especially - for the 5series. Traditions which BMW has been true to - for close to 5 decades, since the E12 (with some exceptions for E60). The front wheel arch to hood distance is small (or at least made to look small). The front overhang is small (or - again - at least made to look small). The front and rear lights are connected with a pronounced, stretched (and I know it sounds idiotic, but still) - muscular - there I said it - line which goes through the centre of door handles (except for the E60). In my car - the F11 - they even adapted the emergency hood pop-up system (essentially an airbag for pedestrians) - in order to make all these canons and traditions work (and it's the third ever most good-looking 5 series imho - after E28 and E34.. and maybe E39 - and btw all these cars adhered to all of the above - and then some - traditional BMW design features). This generation - the G60 - which, coincidentally, was announced one day after my birthday (namely, May 24) - simply spits on all of those traditions - and says - yo, China? BMW's biggest market? Yes, thank you very much - I. WILL. HAVE. China written all over me - and f__ck any canons, traditions, design heritage - or whatever anyone might call any of that - so screw the brand fans which have been true to BMW design for decades. Also - mr. Zipse, the current CEO of BMW - has said that "all modern cars need to be ugly" - no they don't - and no, crazy gadgets which have no place in a car will not replace classy, brilliant design - which BMW has known how to make - for many, many decades. And if the Chinese market is so important that BMW makes this generation of 5series (their mega-seller) - just for China - inside and out - I wonder which cars got Chinese people (known to copy basically all design from the West) - hung on BMW - in the first place. Wasn't it the beautiful E39? The F10/F11? I don't think China wants Chinese design. I think it wants clean, spectacular western design - not a copy of Chinese design - which itself is a copy of... jeezus. This is just bad design. Also - the front looks like a Merc A-class - whereas the rear looks like an E-class. WHY? Also - was the F10 the last generation in which you could switch driving modes, ESC, fog lights, climate controls and stereo (even the "control" screen off) - WITHOUT taking eyes off the road? Have we gone so far beyond all that that we now need all the (complicated, heavy and costly) driver aids? Sorry BMW. You can do better - especially after the massive backlash and lost sales (look at F10 after E60!) - the problem is, you've apparently stopped listening to backlash. Either way - thanks to the Canadian (wait, what?) guys for yet another great video, greetings from Latvia.

Absolutely agree. In my opinion, this whole approach isn't even a smart financial move. Sure they might sell in China today, but what about the future? If they continue copying chinese design, won't the chinese design be the original then? Why buy a german copy of a chinese car when you can have the original, which is probably better in terms of durability anyway. This whole thing stinks, it's cheap. And very stupid in my opinion. You don't change yourself and your core values for someone who liked you for who you were in the first place. BMW will sooner or later lose the respect they earned decades ago if they continue like this, not just from fans.

I just hope these design changes don't trickle down to other companies once it becomes cheaper to do so. It's almost like they want cars to suck for a while so that everyone buys into the next car generation (EV's, self driving, etc) to 'fix' everything.

This cheap plastic in the interior, is a shame ❕ It's sad what's going on with the German car manufacturers, with exception of Porsche 😅 I would by a Kia or Hyundai...as German guy 😜 What VW, BMW and Mercedes build over the last 10-15 years , isn't the quality what I expected...if you know the W124/126/140 from Mercedes.. This was quality ❣️ Maybe I'm an old school boomer 🤷🏻‍♂️😂🤣

You guys just nailed with the intro. It sums up the change in BMW's development from driver's car to a driven's car. I love BMWs' but except for these newer generations with the funky designs and funky interior. And what the heck happened to the Gear Shift lever where is itttt????? I loved the old Gear shift Lever the 5 Series had. And you call that a car true driving enthusiast would love? In essence of capturing more market BMW is loosing its brand image from the most valuable of its customer "The Enthusiasts" - Where are the physical knobs for climate control - As mentioned where is the ESC button The list ain't short.... Few years back we guys were arguing about the big kidney grills these car had, well now this is the least of the concern because BMW is shifting its priority to luxury and want to be Mercedes Benz.

Hard pass on the hidden vents. Not being able to adjust the vents to fire exactly where you want them is one of THE MOST frustrating parts of modern luxury cars. That would be a dealbreaker for me at ANY price point. See: Blazer EV. They did it right.

I own a 2018 M550i and am planning on getting a new car in 2024. It won’t be this car. I drive long distance some times (200 miles+) and electric cars are not really ready to be anything other than commuter cars at the moment. They need to go longer distance in real world driving conditions, charge faster and have many, many more fast charging stations.

You are objectively wrong. I used the lowest range Tesla to drive from Miami to NYC in two days with a good sleep at a hotel that night. New Model S has 400 Miles of range and is both quicker and significantly less cost than your M550i was.

Electric cars are for city driving. I am in Asia - have BMW 5 series (540) long wheelbase and it’s our chauffeured one. The extended 5 series is only available here in China and Asia. Have 2 small BYD electric city cars what wife and I drive inside Shanghai. Only fools in US and some in west drive expensive heavy EV. The whole purpose of EV is lost.

@@satyakammisrai think it depends on where you live and the journeys you're likely to make. My EV will easily do more than 200 miles in a journey but there are plenty of chargers so i don't need a lot left in the battery when i reach my destination. My daily commute is about 130 miles return and that would cost a lot if i was using a petrol car with similar performance. If you want to stick with BMW i think you'll need to wait another generation, if you were set on going EV you'd need to choose another brand like Tesla or Lucid (if you're in the US).

@@jamesfynnhere6983 you did that by planning your route around charging stations, which is inconvenient and a waste of time. I don't want to sit playing on my phone for 2 hours while my car charges.

@@cfoote2667 You are beyond ignorant. The car automatically creates the route (and gives alternate route options) with optimal charging factored in (based on real-time data), it was the exact route I'd have taken in any other vehicle and I didn't charge more then 25mins at any point...

It says boost because BMW couldn't figure out what to do with a spare gear shift paddle without having to redesign the steering column for the electric models. It was probably the best bad option they had.
