The worst thing is the buttonless bandwagon BMW has joined. iDrive 8 is an abomination. The 8 shortcut buttons are gone. Climate control buttons are gone. Heated seats and ventilated seats are now have to be turned on / off in software. Manual turning on of low beam headlights and PARKING LIGHTS are in iDrive. Was the turn-style headlight switch too complicated, for BMW? Even the HEATED STEERING WHEEL BUTTON is gone. No one can dispute that having to navigate a software menu to do simple tasks is easier and safer than a switch you can locate and turn on, without looking, by memory. The fact the common sense has been lost around this is totally mind boggling.

There are certain design canons - in a world of any sports sedan family - but especially - for the 5series. Traditions which BMW has been true to - for close to 5 decades, since the E12 (with some exceptions for E60). The front wheel arch to hood distance is small (or at least made to look small). The front overhang is small (or - again - at least made to look small). The front and rear lights are connected with a pronounced, stretched (and I know it sounds idiotic, but still) - muscular - there I said it - line which goes through the centre of door handles (except for the E60). In my car - the F11 - they even adapted the emergency hood pop-up system (essentially an airbag for pedestrians) - in order to make all these canons and traditions work (and it's the third ever most good-looking 5 series imho - after E28 and E34.. and maybe E39 - and btw all these cars adhered to all of the above - and then some - traditional BMW design features). This generation - the G60 - which, coincidentally, was announced one day after my birthday (namely, May 24) - simply spits on all of those traditions - and says - yo, China? BMW's biggest market? Yes, thank you very much - I. WILL. HAVE. China written all over me - and f__ck any canons, traditions, design heritage - or whatever anyone might call any of that - so screw the brand fans which have been true to BMW design for decades. Also - mr. Zipse, the current CEO of BMW - has said that "all modern cars need to be ugly" - no they don't - and no, crazy gadgets which have no place in a car will not replace classy, brilliant design - which BMW has known how to make - for many, many decades. And if the Chinese market is so important that BMW makes this generation of 5series (their mega-seller) - just for China - inside and out - I wonder which cars got Chinese people (known to copy basically all design from the West) - hung on BMW - in the first place. Wasn't it the beautiful E39? The F10/F11? I don't think China wants Chinese design. I think it wants clean, spectacular western design - not a copy of Chinese design - which itself is a copy of... jeezus. This is just bad design. Also - the front looks like a Merc A-class - whereas the rear looks like an E-class. WHY? Also - was the F10 the last generation in which you could switch driving modes, ESC, fog lights, climate controls and stereo (even the "control" screen off) - WITHOUT taking eyes off the road? Have we gone so far beyond all that that we now need all the (complicated, heavy and costly) driver aids? Sorry BMW. You can do better - especially after the massive backlash and lost sales (look at F10 after E60!) - the problem is, you've apparently stopped listening to backlash. Either way - thanks to the Canadian (wait, what?) guys for yet another great video, greetings from Latvia.
@xAandreyYx Жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree. In my opinion, this whole approach isn't even a smart financial move. Sure they might sell in China today, but what about the future? If they continue copying chinese design, won't the chinese design be the original then? Why buy a german copy of a chinese car when you can have the original, which is probably better in terms of durability anyway. This whole thing stinks, it's cheap. And very stupid in my opinion. You don't change yourself and your core values for someone who liked you for who you were in the first place. BMW will sooner or later lose the respect they earned decades ago if they continue like this, not just from fans.

To be fair, the owner could always just take the diamond cut & black wheels and get them powercoated silver themselves. 🙂 A lot of cheaper auto makers offer the same wheel designs with both diamond cut (over black or grey) *or* painted silver finish to differentiate different trim levels. It's a cheap way of offering visual differentiation from the same part!

BMW dropped the ball on the new 5 series. I am a mercedes fanboy but I can't lie the F80's and last gen M5 were some of the most beautiful cars ever made. It's a shame what bmw design has come to. As a mercedes fan boy I feel like mercedes has begun to do something similar. I mean just look at the W205 C63 and the lastest W206. However, bmw has done it to almost all of their cars. It's a real shame beacuse these cars drive beautifully but they have lost their looks and appeal.😢

I agree. The F90 M5 WAS the reason i changed from being a Mercedes guy to BMW and still is my favourite car. Prior to that i was in love with the w204 c63. I would say that G30 have better front. Sides are practically the same while rear end of F10 was much more BMW due to a respectful nod to e34 design with L shaped taillights. I loved the old Gear shift Lever the 5 Series had. And you call that a car true driving enthusiast would love? As a Merc lover too I approve of BMW’s decision to NOT build a ground up EV. I like the fact that they are using the same design for both ICE and EV. @@elbillar77 Does any automotive brand have rear wheel steering ? Does any brand have the Exterior and Interior lightings of an EQS ? Does any brand have a Mercedes Benz Hyper Screen ? Does any brand Have a 3 Pointed Silver Star for their Badge ? Not any brand can just smack their logo onto an electric Mercedes just because you don’t like its design. Try again, you sound more like a fake “Mercedes lover” .. Mercedes has designed the EQS to be luxurious (which it is I’ve been in many) smooth ride (I daily drive a Tesla and compared, Gotta say Mercedes has done ev suspension PERFECTLY) and good to handle. The short front end is for better visibility and easier handling, I LOVE how it looks like a bubble, and the wheels are insane🔥. The EQB SUV looks great too, the Mercedes EV Headlight and taillight designs look very space shipy. A gear tunnel has always been a design flaw that could never be ignored and everyone hates, now that it’s gone in EV’s, more leg room and cleaner look on the inside !
@elbillar77 Жыл бұрын
@@cry.martini I respect your opinion, especially since we are talking about design, which is a subjective matter. I don't criticise the tech on the EQ models, just the design. I believe Mercedes should have put more effort in the design. It makes sense aerodynamically and it's practical as a BEV but it is very generic and I stand by that you can slap any badge on it and it would't make a difference. And I think the S-Class is more luxurious.

I think this 5 will always be compromised by having to accept two types of power sources - styling, range and weight seem to be where the biggest hits have been taken. This is a decent looking car in ICE form but slightly odd in EV guise where it looks like someone forgot to fit the grill. I like the dash and the hidden vents, hate the piano black and crystal tat and as for the vegazzle leather - surely a more sensible name could have been found, although it is hilarious. James's idea of having AC blowing out of cool statues in your lobby is the winner here though - perhaps Canova's Three Graces with cool air wafting gently from their bottoms would be both tasteful and discrete in the way BMW's crystal effects so obviously aren't. Great review as aways guys 👌
