Personally I prefer the thumb throttle because it allows me to have my remaining fingers resting on the brake lever, in many cases as I was cruising around, a car pops out of a driveway or a garage without checking and having my finger right by the brake lever I many times could let go of the throttle and immediately yank on the brake to stop the bike, where on the half-twist throttle you're gripping on the throttle and your handle grip at all the time, so that additional fraction of time you need to let go it the twist and reach your fingers over the lever to then press hard on it, doesn't pass me the confidence of control feeling. It might be something just psychological but having my fingers ready to press the brake makes me feel in control of the bike, than the bike in control of me. So in my hike I also have a horn button wrapped around my handle grip, so my thumb its on the throttle, my index finger is by the horn button and the left 3 fingers on the brake lever. So while I brake I honk the heck out of the driver to wake him up while I stop my bike to avoid a collision. Seems a lot, but saved me every time. Thanks God.

I have been riding bicycles since I was 7 years old. July 14th 2002 I first rode my hammer ebike. I watched a lot of videos they said there's a lot of power but I didn't believe it LOL. So I take off I'm at the End of the Street faster than I can believe it it's a short Street. I was going to turn right but with the giant fat tires is not so easy so I almost believed then I went up on the sidewalk and crashed. And I hit my nub straight down on the sidewalk. And then I got up and rode 12 more miles and that was the most fun I've had in years. Sitting here trying to heal my foot then I lost my leg after years of trying to save it so I've hardly been anywhere except the doctor and shopping and now I am free yay yay for e-bikes and I used my stimulus for something good that should last me a very long time if I keep it maintained. It's a lot like a regular bicycle Minus the electric motor and being 70 pounds and the giant tires. I truly believe in E bikes. I was researching and the first ebike looks like a motorcycle was in 1895 but they didn't have the distance please do and that was made by Bosch I wonder if it was made in Rochester New York near me they have a place Bausch & Lomb well they used to.

That where short way twist throttles come in handy. You can rest your pointing finger on the break and still twist it. Or change the brakes. But thumb throttle is cool too. I just like twist better. But your points are valid. Look at quads these have thumb throttles for a reason. I ride long empty paths so of course I choose the twist. It’s an easy ride nothing to worry about.

Hey Mike, you have not mentioned the "feeling" of a twist throtle. I have used the thumb throtle, but the twist has a major advantage: really controlling the motor.If you press the thumb throtle, you can feel a certain gradual power increasing, as you are pressing the thumb button.But with twist throtle, that's more let's say "fine tuned" I can twist the throtle, just to keep the motor rotating really slow and being able to accelerate smoother, just like when having the more expensive controllers, for example ASI bac, or phaserunner.These controllers are known to keep the motor rotating.This of course applies only for mid drive motors, i have tested and noticed this while using bbs02b and bbshd motors.

Just bought my first ebike and it came with a thumb throttle that has cruise control built in. After holding the throttle down for approximately 6 seconds the cruise control kicks in and you can release the throttle and the bike maintains what ever speed you were going. To turn it off you simply tap either brake and it cuts off the motor. Love this feature, use it all the time on my 20 mile round trip commute to work.

@codbug
@codbug Жыл бұрын
My bike came with a half-twist. Used it for several months before trying out a cheap thumb throttle on a whim. Found I had way more precise speed control with the thumb throttle, a less cluttered cockpit, and more constant stability while also being able to keep my fingers rested on the brake lever at all times for an overall safer and more stable experience for someone who occasionally has to ride on ice and slush. I've not experienced any of the downsides listed. My bike's controller has PAS and cruise control, I had more issues with bounce affecting throttle on the half-twist with my weight being partially distributed onto the throttle, and I routinely commute in sub-freezing temperatures without issue by simply wearing gloves--something I'd be doing in the cold, regardless of if I was on a bike or not. May be worth mentioning that I've been playing video games for over 35 years and am a pianist, and have a strong, well-conditioned thumb, and possibly an under-developed wrist, so others' mileage may vary. The difference in analog precision for me however was night and day. To borrow an analogy from gaming, it was like switching from an analog stick to a mouse for aiming.

"The difference in analog precision for me however was night and day." Are you saying that the half-twist throttle sucked because it was not analogue?
@codbug
@codbug 5 ай бұрын
@@jason.arthur.taylor Nope, the operating word was precision. My thumb with no other forces being exerted on it could make much finer adjustments than my entire wrist which was also supporting part of my weight, gripping the handlebars for stability and keeping my fingers within reach of the brakes (and later my turn signals). It was easier to maintain a stable grip, especially over bumpy terrain and still have very precise control with flexing a loose thumb than twisting my entire wrist. With the thumb I could accelerate much more slowly and hold any speed I wanted without interference from any other factors.

greatly prefer a right hand half grip twist throttle. I also have motorcycle experience. A left hand throttle is dangerous in my opinion due to the mix of standards. My worst throttle experience was on a motorized scooter which used a pull lever throttle on the right side. When I was climbing a hill, the bike wheelied which resulted in my loss of balance and pulling the throttle lever even harder to hold my grip on the handlebars. I flipped over and landed on my back and broke my shoulder blade on the asphalt. Very painful accident with months of slow recovery.

Left half twist. I have my gears on the right with a single brake cut off. The half twist IMO is by far the safest option for a throttle as you can ride without worry of triggering the throttle in a busy area. Experienced motorcycle riders may get on fine with a full twist but most people jumping on ebikes are not such people. Never wanted to try a thumb. I have one I want to use for regen braking tho. Cheers

I don't see how any kind of a twist throttle can be less likely to be accidentally activated than a thumb throttle, since your hands are always on the grips, but can easily be kept well away from a thumb throttle. To me, using a thumb throttle requires a deliberate choice. But, if it's a concern for you, that's cool, too. Whatever makes it safe and fun is the right thing.

A disadvantage of the half-twist is that you now have to find a "half grip" to fill out the end of the bar. If you use a full length normal grip, it gets too long and funky or it doesn't fit at all (hitting the curve part of the bar). The "half grip" is actually fairly hard to find and limits you to a small set of available grips.

TIP: Half-twist throttle can be used as cruise control :) Just push the grip thight against the throttle and it wil stay in place. No wrist fatigue anymore. And i agree about the right side throttle . They should standardize the back rear shift to the left side to avoid this problem. But on the other hand, a throttle is forbidden in many countries for pedal assist ebikes (max 350W or 25km/h). With throttle it falls under the catagory motorised scooter/moped (above 350W and/or 25km\h) or motorbikes (speedelec bikes) (from 500W till 4000W and/or 50km\h).

Although I watched this when Micah first posted it, I apologize if someone else has since posted the obvious problem with left-hand throttles. In the USA, we use our left hand to signal turns. It's pretty difficult to signal properly when it forces you to remove your hand from the throttle. I also think many manufacturers are losing sales to former motorcycle riders who want a twist throttle.

If like me - a regular runner, jogger, trekker etc - you've tripped and fallen quite heavily onto you hands once or twice a year you probably also find that it's usually your thumb and thumb-base that breaks most of each fall's force - so you end up with a thumb that doesn't much like being kept 'muscled" and taut in a stiff position for very long. One advantage of that is you'll feel less inclined to use battery power for long stretches and keep fitter because your stiff aching thumb starts complaining after each 20 secs or so of thumb-throttling..

All 3 are bad. I have to modify throttles to make them usable so there's no wrist/thumb fatigue and no holding the wrist at an awkward angle. Start with a half twist. Glue a bar on the front so your fingers pull up on the bar to actuate. The bar is longer than the half throttle, so it subtends the whole grip length. Much more comfy for long periods.

Any advice on slowing down my e-scooter? I have a Velocifero Mad Truck. I wanted a scooter like this hoping to go around my land having relaxed trips to enjoy the view and also keep an eye on areas that needed maintenance. In other words, I’m not interested in going too fast. Really annoying. I’ve been doing some research but still feel lost. Any suggestions on a throttle that allows me to control the speed (slow, medium, fast)? Eureka! I viewed your excellent videos and tried adding a thumb to my Himiway Cruiser with not altogether satisfactory results and off it came. I prefer to twist but found the half-grip throttle clumsy to modulate. Then an epiphany: Those flattened comfy grips are the problem. As I try to rotate the throttle with the right side of my palm, the left side is held in place by the right-side half-grip. I replaced both grips with conventional round grips slightly smaller in diameter than the throttle and now I have great control. The shape of the new grips allows my palm to slip in concert with the rotation of the throttle. What do you think? Have I just advanced the half-throttle solution, at least for this setup?

Might have to get a cheap one off Wish and try it. I'm willing to do all the wiring and soldering for the answer too so unless you've tried one out, don't make a choice randomly.... I really don't like the full twist because of riding at speed and hitting bumps w/ your wrist all bent weird hurts and I haven't had that problem w/ half twist so I'm betting I'll find something I like or dislike when I try a thumb throttle.

Ok, I got it. This is the channel about electric motorcycles, not about e-bikes. If you "ride straight line at full speed" using motor - you are motorcycling your e-bike. That's fine, but not what I want. Now the question: should I like or should I dislike this video if I want youtube algorithm to recommend me videos about e-bikes which won't include information about electric motorcycles? Hmm..... *sound of rusted gears"

Let s say that with a single charger (i.e. 58.8V) you want to charge 2 52V batteries at the same time and in order to do that you make a 'Y type' splitter with 1 female terminal and 2 male terminals. Assuming that the 2 batteries before recharging show different voltage level, say one os at 43V, the other at 46 V. What precautions would you take to prevent current running from the 46v battery to the 43v battery through the Y splitter? Maybe diodes on each positive wire? Or maybe following a rigid sequence, charger to splitter first and then splitters to batteries, will suffice?

Why doesn't Houston (i.e., any city east of California) have a full service e-bike shop and why don't D2C e-bike manufacturers have relationships with the B&M shops to enhance the end user experience and warranty value for all parties involved? Hmm. Sounds like market opportunity given the current demand. Any takers?

My Ebike came with a 1/2 twist that has enough grip on it that I can also use it as a thumb throttle. It helps a lot.

As a motorcyclist I am more comfortable with 1/2 twist on Right handlebar, but I have already trained myself to drive both left and right side shift lever motorcycles, so maybe I can retrain for the left side throttle. That said, however, how about just moving the bicycle gear change selector to the left handle bar and keeping the right side twist throttle? I consider the throttle to be more important than gear change - and, 90% of the riders I see do not even pedal. BTW, what is the best supplier of all these parts if I want to experiment with different placements?

I’m looking to by a battery online. I currently have a 1000W 15.6Ah 48V battery ebike. It is however very heavy. I would like to downgrade to a tube mounted smaller 48V battery. Can you please tell me what I need to be aware of? Such as the connection type, current etc.

Cool, thanks! Is a left half throttle more helpful in a quick reaction situation where you need to slam on the rear (right side) brakes?

after a full throttle on a full twist throttle, couldn't you just adjust your hand back to neutral position while maintaining the full throttle? that's what i do.

Hi, not sure if you will see this comment considering ur video is over 2 yrs old but can you help me find a solution for my left thumb throttle. After a little while, my thumb starts hurting and feeling numb from constantly pushing with my thumb on the throttle which has that weird kinda sharp edges, like the one you showed. What can I use to place on the throttle to make it softer?

I'll go for thumb throttle with wind guards, either in the form of wind breaking gloves, or handlebar-mounted hand covers.

My thumb throttle seems to be too sensitive. The ability to hold a lower steady power is challenging. I've thought of mechanically limiting the thumb or adding a resistor into the sensor line. Don't know if I can just limit the max speed of the thumb throttle in the display menu; depends upon whether they are independent or if the menu max speed is overall the final restriction. Will experiment with simpler options first.

I have a great question for you, I am interested in a twist throttle that starts you off slow, because I notice that all the cheap $15 twist throttles that I a have used, knock you off the saddle as soon as you barley turn it to its minimum activation point, I am looking for a throttle that starts off very slow and gradually starts accelerating to full speed. Please refer me to one either through amazon link or a model and model number, I will subscribe to your channel upon you response. thanks

Found a stick shift clamp here in Netherlands, works geat for gear shift. Maybe you blokes can adapt it as a throttle...? Maybe with a paddle ? Can i put up a pic?

Now aged 73 and having driven and ridden all sorts of cars and bikes I thought I was fully conversant with most cable and sprung throttlesa. Always will be a twist grip guy though. All my life I have been or at least tried to have been a courteous driver and rider. I now have a huge problem. When I used to drive trucks and sometimes cars, if I had a full and heavy load and could see that I was holding up traffic I could give them two ways of me telling I knew they were there and also by either opening my drivers window could wave them through if the way ahead was clear or could indicate and tell them by using my flashers. Neither I know are really street legal here in the UK but are generally accepted as good manners. Now to my problem with my three wheeler motability electric scooter. Mine, because it is listed as being for Continental use also has a three position setting for throttle. 1 = 4mph for use on sidewalk (pavement here in the UK. 2 = 8mph for use on all roads and highways and then 3 =15 mph for Continental roads or private land. Throttle is smooth in increasing speed in all selections, however If and when traffic is building up behind I dare not let go of the spring loaded throttle as it shuts off power so quickly I know that before I can signal using the standard circled hand then the traffic behind me would be grinding me into the pavement. Know what I mean ? Is there any way of modifying this shut down? I must admit that it's almost handy as I shut down speed in increments when approaching a junction, however I'm sure I can get used to that rather than causing a crash. Any and all ideas welcome . Great show and thank you. Regards Alan

I've had a full twist throttle on my motorcycles, thumb throttles on my ATV's and now I have a twist half throttle on my ebike. For an ebike I think I prefer the twist half throttle. There's too much to do with one's hand while cycling to effectively use a full twist throttle and I didn't like the thumb throttle on the ATV as one gets a seriously cramped thumb after a few hours. It's just my preference, that's all.

I’m trying to buy a conversion kit. How can I tell if say the 1000W motor kit I’m buying is a good one? In general, how can one tell if the kits are quality products or just cheap knockoffs? I understand brand awareness and price are indicators, but buying from aliexpress is another beast all together. Also if you can talk about monitors ads vs disads that would be great.

Let's say I was to build an electric motorcycle(homologated one) or convert an existing one , and my solution is all about engineering a very different product to the existing market while still making it feel like a sports cruiser / coffee racer. What never produced features would you be looking for in such machine so that the experience would justify buying it over a classic ev/ gaz bike on the existing market?

I have a 15kW monster ebike (actually 18kW but I don't push it to full voltage). I currently use a full twist. I am really concerned about the pressure I put on it as I hold on for dear life when I go full beans (which I do often - I just can't resist it). The full-twists I've seen are only anchored onto the handlebar at one end - the other end is just floating, there is no means for it to put the reactive force along the entire length of the twister; this is asking to be broken.

IMHO, e-bike should have no throttle handle at all. It should have intelligent controller with assist mode, to help pedaling uphill. If you want anything else - just buy normal motorcycle with petroleum etc etc. It will be better for ecosystem, for your health, for your safety and also cheaper :)

Does anyone make a locking throttle for straightaway riding? That would answer the thumb or wrist fatigue issue. Cruise control for bikes I suppose. A quick release function could be added to the mechanism.

I ride an e-bike, MTB, 1000w ultra, fat tire, with a thumb throttle. I rarely use as it drains the battery in no time. Issues: can be dangerous - accidently bumping the throttle while on uneven terrain; front tire lifting off the ground when used to start from a dead stop; and should you crash the throttle can be activated by a tree branch or other item. On the street its okay but worthless on rough roads/trails.

motorcycles, the things ebikes are emulating, use twist throttles. if your doing more than pushing the lever for a few seconds, get a twist and watch some motorcycle throttle control videos that can show you more technique. its very comfortable and should not be done like most people show when they make the twisting motion like at 1:46.

My new ebike has a left side thumb throttle, which is the worst of all worlds in my opinion. It does have a trigger shifter on the right, but it's on the top, not the bottom, so it should work even with a thumb throttle. If they're going to move something to the left side it should be the shifter, not the throttle. The shifter on motorcycles is on the left, so it makes a lot more sense than putting the throttle on that side. Also, since the right side brake lever is usually the front brake and that's where most of your stopping power is, putting the shifter on the left makes it much easier to downshift while braking. Also, you gennerally want either the throttle or the brake, not both at the same time, which is why the front brake and throttle are on the same side on a motorcycle. Seriously, the people who have these "brilliant" 🙄 ideas about changing things obviously never actually use the product themselves. Theory is one thing, reality is quite different. Motorcycle controls are set up the way they are for very good reasons after more than a hundred years.
