Trying to get the dross out of the silver just to stare at the reflection of the days that used to be; the younger me. Through simple eyes, the simple lives I'd see.
Moving around the box to clear the static, I'd turn the dial every time that something made me cry. And every year, through simple ears the simple things I'd hear.

But it's funny how the way we love is backwards in a sense, because the way we love is backing up and backing down to just preserve their innocence. Underwater, hard to tell which way is up or down. And it's easier to drown. So we tune it out, and we let her down
Trying to justify the isolation when words won't measure up to all the things I wish my tears could ever say. Her simple heart was torn apart that day.
Fighting back the tears of once a lover; the lover was a fighter and he loved her through the fire good and bad, but now he's gone. So why am I so sad?

It simply is something to look in the eyes of a child who is hurting but still has a smile, knowing things can get better no matter how bad that it gets. Sometimes we forget. It simply is something while holding back tears to acknowledge our children are wise beyond their years. And it's marvelous, how marvelous that they turn out just fine even though we try to get the dross out of the silver.
