I think the Slug Club thing was that Slughorn turned down Lupin. As a teacher, he would have known about his lycanthropy. And with the social prejudice, he knew Remus would not be “enough of a high flyer” (why Molly thinks Auther was never invited via HBP). Then James and Sirius who totally accept their Moony for who he is, did not go out of solidarity.

I think the main reason Voldemort is afraid of Dumbledore, aside from the fact that Dumbledore is a powerful wizard whose skills match or even exceed Voldemort's, is that that Dumbledore KNOWS Voldemort. And not just Voldemort, Dumbledore knows him as TOM RIDDLE. Dumbledore, out of everyone living, knows the most about him, where he came from, his childhood misdeeds, how he began to gather followers, the desire he once had to teach. And he knows that Dumbledore suspected more or even know more, like how he was the heir of Slytherin, etc. "Dumbledore never seemed to like me as much as the other teachers." Voldemort knows that Dumbledore alone suspected him and saw past his charming facade the whole time. Of course he would fear Dumbledore. Not only does Dumbledore have the power to defeat him, directly or indirectly ("He reached out beyond the grave through the boy, the boy"), but Dumbledore is the only person who he was never able to fool.
@ambiverter6 ай бұрын
Excellent point. Dumbledore also knew Riddle could talk to snakes, meaning he suspected Riddle the MOST for being the Heir of Slytherin. Also, Dumbledore was the first person he had met who had frightened him, and whom he couldn't command/convince. Another thing to consider is that Voldemort knows that Dumbledore is intelligent and wise, and is therefore afraid of the truth, that Dumbledore might be right that Love is in fact stronger than Dark magic

To answer you're question about what a baron is. In the English nobility around the time of the founders, the most elite levels of the aristocracy, but still below the king were Dukes and Earls. An Earl was a noble who held large estates in the King's name and provided knights and soldiers for the king in times of war. Dukes were almost always members of the royal family who weren't the king or his heir, often younger sons and illegitimate sons of the king or maybe his father, who have been granted large estates. The Barons or the Great Barons were a subclass of the wealthiest and most powerful of these major lords who owned and entire county or more. These lords were so powerful they could at times even rival the King's own power including in the Baron's wars, a series of civil conflicts that nearly overthrew the Plantaginet dynasty in the reigns of King John and his son Henry III.

1:26:46 it is a fear on Harry's part because he doesn't want to go back to the dursleys. It isn't an actual threat of expulsion from the school. The only time the school has ever mentioned expelling them was when Snape caught them in Chamber of Secrets after they crashed into the Whomping willow. I don't think Hogwarts expels students except under extreme circumstances such as when Hagrid was accused of murdering Myrtle

Ron knowing a lot about dragons always made sense to me, even though he wants to be out of his brothers' shadows, he still admires them (except maybe Percy after book 5). Even in the chapter with the mirror, we see that his determinants of success are his brothers' achievements. So it makes total sense he would listen and remember things Charlie had said about dragons as that knowledge wouldn't seem boring or unimportant to him, dragons would seem interesting to him because they are interesting to his older brother whom he admires.

Being a leader and/or living forever sounds exhausting because you care about responsibility and what it means. Most importantly it is because you practice empathy. Dumbledore is a wonderful example. He does not want the ministry job. being headmaster is more than enough for him and he cares deeply for his students. Being a leader who cares is very difficult, but leading becomes orders of magnitude simpler if you are a leader who doesn’t care. So much less to care about so less pressure. lol sheesh I’m even bummed by this point. Great work as usual guys. Love each and every deep dive.

Hey SuperCarlinBrothers, I think this might give your Harry Potter fan brains a good workout: Why Dumbledore knows moody is fake (focus on 4th point): 1. The memory in the pensieve that Harry stumbles upon means that Dumbledore was onto Barty Crouch Jr, he just wasn’t able to figure out how or if he is alive. 2. He knows that someone is stealing from snape and making polyjuice potion. 3. As the amount of stuff stolen was large, and when crouch sr dies, it implies that the perpetrator is in disguise and living in hogwarts and needs to drink the potion constantly. It is also suggested by the fact that Harry’s name was thrown by the goblet: to trick Dumbledore’s protective enchantments, it would ve taken time and required the perpetrator to be inside hogwarts. 4. All this should ve been a speculation with just one link missing. This link was provided by Harry when he tells Dumbledore about his dream. Dumbledore also INTENDED Harry to see the Barty Crouch court memory. Dumbledore knows the connection between Harry and Voldemort and knows the significance of this dream where BARTY CROUCH JR IS STILL ALIVE. And now the disappearance/killing of Barty Crouch Sr further adds to it, the ceiling incident in the beginning and everything would have made sense to Dumbledore. There might be another possibility: Dumbledore knows that Voldemort must be finished off by Harry and therefore must be brought back to life and the secret of Horcruxes be identified to kill off voldemort for good. He might also have guessed that Voldemort will use Harry’s blood in his ignorance, meaning Harry is safe. What he actually might have missed was that the cup was a Portkey or that Harry and Cedric might go together; as he would never risk a student’s (Cedric’s) life.

Hello to you guys and Happy New Years from Finland. I hope you have a bit warmer than we, here it is about -27°C. But I have a thought that I have been thinking on for some time now. And it's about the spell Evanesco. In the seventh book when Prof. McGonagall opened the Rawenclaw tower for Amycus. The door asked "Where do vanished objects go?" Prof. McGonagall answerd "Into non-being wich is to say everything" Do all wiches and wizards have a own personal "non-being" where they can vanish their objects or is it like the Room of Requirement so that everything that gets vanished, vanishes to the same "non-being" ? And if so, what is in the way of theft from there? Do ministry of magic have some rules or regulations of vanishing and conjuring objects? For example. In the fifth book when Harry come's to the HQ of Order of The Phoenix and comes Into the kitchen after the meeting. And Bill hastily vanishes the plans away. If those plans ended up Into Bills own "non-being" no harm done. But if they end up In a space where everyone can conjur them. Why cant just Lucuis Malfoy being conjurg stuff for fun In his mansion and hoping something good come's along. This is my question. I hope you understood it. And once again. Happy New Year and keep up the great work. Love your videos.

With the whole idea of things being "unfair" to the reader, specifically when snape spit on the ground, but were also in the mind of an 11 year old. When they think someone is against them, they may see any of their actions as personal or pointed. To me it feels more like an example of when Harry is an unreliable narrator, because he doesn't have all the information and the brain development, Snape could have literally just been spitting extra saliva out of his mouth. Two comments on dragon blood... firstly, it doesn't make any sense that Slughorn uses the blood as fake human blood as it is actually GREEN. 😅 (Book 5: "Hagrid picked up the steak and slapped it over the left side of his face. Greenish blood trickled down into his beard...".) Secondly, I always found its use as oven cleaner completely ridiculous, but my head-canon is that it wards off fire dwelling salamanders who have really corrosive droppings and thus ruin fireplaces. The salamanders would be repelled by the smell of large and dangerous lizards. Thus, Dumbledore doesn't have to randomly clean his sneakoscope, desk and bookshelf until he discovered it, but can use it purposefully by deduction. 😊 Completely made up by myself, of course, but what do you think?
@lkhai62435 ай бұрын
Might be greenish cause it's not fresh... But I'm not sure, so maybe you're right
@shhimreading90610 ай бұрын
wait, hold up, i always assumed the uses for dragons blood would be used for cool things like really powerful potions and not something like.... removing a veruca and cleaning an oven. like, in my head when dumbledore is accused of taking credit for the 12 uses it's this really big thing because i always assumed dragons blood would be used for 12 really important things, so it was a big deal if he wasn't really the person who made these discoveries. now i'm just like.... i mean it's not good if he took credit for someone else's work, but.... idk i actually kind of feel disappointed?

I am gonna keep saying this because it's an annoying detail that I keep focusing on. This book foreshadows a lot but in a way that you don't really notice or like certain details about certain characters are so inconsequential in the moment or are like things you don't really pay too much mind too because you either need to know specific background information or you need to read on to understand the reference. Quirrell should have had a different name. His name I think should have related to or been in reference to Janus. Especially because a lot of character names are pulled from mythology and Latin language. An average 10 or 11 year old kid is not likely to know loads about Roman mythology and stuff like that so the name is not gonna mean too much to them in the moment but adult readers who maybe do know more will understand the reference because Janus was the god with two faces and Quirrell is the man with two faces and like that's literally the name of the chapter where we find this out so it just would have been a nice detail. And it may have clued people in sooner to Quirrell being the villain of the story over Snape. I just think it would have been a good little detail to notice if his name related to Janus.
@grantflora40984 ай бұрын
When you guys talk about why Snape sounds so evil in this book, but particularly in his encounters with Quirrell, you have to remember that he needs Voldemort to think that he is still bad. If you guys are right and Dumbledore knows Quirrell is working with Voldemort(which I think is true based off of what Harry says at the end of the book about Dumbledore giving him the chance to face Voldemort), then Snape has to be careful not to appear too sympathetic to Dumbledore and still look like he wants to help Voldemort too. I think with this in mind, it makes a lot of sense why Snape would appear more evil, because Voldemort is at the school watching him the entire time and still believes that Snape is still on his side. With that said, I know a lot about Harry Potter but I think you guys do a great job and really know what you're talking about!

I think one of the uses of dragon blood must be for making a body using the Philosopher's Stone. If it is similar to human blood, that could make sense. It might also explain why Quirrell was encouraging Hagrid to raise a dragon - because Voldemort would need the blood to get a body once he got the stone.
@fishpie5710 ай бұрын
Making a body is also part of alchemy, so it could explain why Dumbledore was working with Flamel and making a new contribution to alchemy so long after the creation of the stone.
