During the summer, on nights with a full moon, they put on an evening music show. People bring chairs, pack a dinner, and watch the sun set, while the full moon rises and you listen to music. It is a fantastic experience!

Just came back from White Sands and it was gorgeous. Like you Josh, during a hike, I found myself all alone out in the sand dunes and it felt so peaceful. And I agree that the sunset is the best I've seen in a national park. Loved the colors - pink and orange. Your video was a wonderful reminder of my time there.

Was that border patrol checkpoint still there on the 70? That was one of the weirdest things, running into a checkpoint right outside of a national park. Can't remember if it was a little north or south of the park entrance.

Well, we apparently went to White Sands at the wrong time of year. It was June 3rd and 113 degrees. Needless to say, we did not stay long outside of the vehicle. It was a stop off from Colorado. And we went to the giant Pistachio because of your video. It was open! Thanks for all you share. We love all your videos!

When I was a kid in the 50s we used to go to White Sands for picnics while we were staying in Ruidoso. We would have a fire and stay well after dark playing in the moonlight in the white sand. It was one of my favorite things to do back then. There were far fewer people then. Yes, and the sunsets were gorgeous.
@michaelshultz25403 жыл бұрын
Grew up in el paso. My father was part of the team that tested and perfected the guidance and control systems for the lunar landing model. We went many times to white sands often just a Sunday drive. My childhood memories are full of days in white sands as well as many visits to Carlsbad caverns, and Juarez. Hiking the Franklin mountains to waco tanks. Riding the tram. And Ascarity park. And broild shrimp from the Oasis drive in. While listening to Steve Crosnos .😎 let's not forget watching the filming of The Getaway and the Ever Shining Star of Texas on the side of the mountain. 😎

It was raining lightly from Hurricane Harold from Texas, and almost no one was there, but very magical, like walking on another planet. The 15 minute movie in the visitors center was excellent background.
@gmaneis3 жыл бұрын
Too bad the visitor center is restricted by Covid. The museum explains the natural processes (about ten of them) that have to occur in a specific order to form the dunes. The dune field covers 275 square miles, and is the largest of only a handful of gypsum dune fields in the world. The next largest is near Carlsbad, NM, and covers only 4 square miles, so White Sands is truly a special place. Glad to see you guys enjoying it so much. I volunteered at the monument when my wife and I lived in Alamogordo for 10 years. WS is my favorite place on earth, and that's saying a lot, since I've been to several parks, including Carlsbad, Mammoth, and Wind caves, Glacier, Rocky Mountain, Arches, Badlands, and Yellowstone. I know that's far from seeing all the wonderful national parks, but it's enough to make me certain that something about those dunes is truly captivating. Thanks for sharing your fun! Oh, and if you ever go back, make sure it's mid-July. Take twice as much water as you think you'll need, along with sunscreen and a good hat, and walk onto the dunes at high noon when the temperature is 110F. You will not burn your feet! Seriously, you won't. Gypsum reflects the heat. But if you do that, be careful. While I volunteered there, a 23 year old nurse died from dehydration on the Alkali Flat Trail. The dunes are beautiful, but will quickly take your life away if you are not super careful.
