We got a chance to spend three days in Bozeman, Montana a few months back and really enjoyed exploring the area. Southern Montana is incredibly beautiful with tons of outdoor opportunities, great restaurants, and unique attractions. Here are a few of our favorites and let me know what we left off in the comments.

I moved out of Bozeman after seven years of living there just a few months ago, so this was a fun way to indulge my homesickness, thank you! I did want to mention a couple things, particularly coffee: Cafe M is the best coffee in Bozeman and has a location on Main St. and one on Kagy. Wild Joe's is the next best, and then Rockford Coffee. Top three breakfast spots for me are Stormcastle, then Nova, then Cateye. Breweries are Bunkhouse, then Bridger Brewing, then probably Map, and the best bar is the Copper Whiskey Bar. Also, hot springs! Bozeman Hot Springs is fine if you want to stay in town but Norris is my favorite if you're willing to drive about an hour, or about an hour the other way to go to Chico, which is close to Yellowstone. If you're outdoorsy, Hyalite is a very close wilderness area and depending on what you want to do, you can hike, camp, swim, kayak, or just have a fire with your friends. The MSU rec center has all kinds of rentable gear if you need anything. This was so fun, thanks for the trip down memory lane!

Lewis & Clark Caverns is a must check out, and you covered what to do during the warmer months. Winter months, ski resorts of course, and in paradise valley, Chico Hot Springs is great, plus dog sledding is available there. I don't like Blackbird all that much, recommend Red Tractor Pizza, much better IMO.

My aunt took me to The Grizzly Experience a year or so ago when she came to visit me. We got to see Bella, their youngest bear and she will do trick if you ask nicely. I said, 'hey Bella' softly and she looked right at me, got a great picture of her looking right at me as I took the picture. They have one bear that came out later (I forget his name) that is addicted to coffee. Before each bear comes out, the keepers hide treats around the enclosure. It helps stimulate them and encourages exercise. With Bella they hid mostly fruit, with the next bear it was a few grapes and other fruit, some nuts, and a LOT of coffee grounds. They hid coffee grounds and some coffee beans all over and when he came out, he wasted no time in finding every last crumb. As the keeper said he would, he ate it, rolled around in it, rubbed it on his furr....and I thought *_I_* loved coffee.

Ate at the Pickle Barrel a lot while in college in the early 80's. The town doesn't have it's small town atmosphere anymore like it did when we were there. Still pass through once a year to see how it changed.

Bob Guenthner I went to MSU in the 60's and lived on a ranch there from 1970-86. Yes, indeed, Bozeman has changed so very much since those years. Would not want to live there any longer! Far too much traffic and can't even find a parking spot on Main Street. Has lost its charm.

The Lava Lake hike is maybe 15-20 minutes outside of Bozeman just inside Gallatin Canyon. Rocky, beautiful, forested hike that ends at a gorgeous mountain lake. It's my favorite hike in the area. Hyalite also has a lot of sweet trails. Another, more challenging hike is up the backside of the Bridger range -- Sacajawea Peak. It's a mostly exposed trail, very windy, but some amazing views of both sides of the range at the top. Happy hiking to anyone who visits!

We just went to Bozeman. Thank you, for all the info! We took your advice, we did everything, but the hot springs (not enough time) and the only hike we did was the hike to the College M. It was not easy, even the trail to left. It has a lot of switchbacks, rocky terrain, and steep drops to the side. I workout, on a regular bases, so I am not in terrible shape, but even the hike to the left was not easy. Maybe its because I live at sea level and Bozeman is over 5,000 feet in evelation, idk, but it was not easy. My son tripped and almost fell off the side. I would not recommend this hike with kids. The Museum of the Rockies was really entertaining, informative, and was way bigger than I expected. The bear encounter was the best!!! I will go back, just for that!....thanks again! 😀

I would say the food is one of the parts of the list that should be its own video almost. Cafe Zydeco (amazing Cajun) is a hidden gem, Main Street over easy is one of the best breakfasts around, bridger brewing by MSU is a brewery and delicious pizza spot, and that’s part of the list.

NO. Come to Montana to be a Montanan. Don't leave a California or the like and demand Montana be more like a place like California.

See it your way or else others are ignorant. Move to Montana. Live the Montana lifestyle. It's simple. Don't move to an area where you a foreigner and then criticize based on your self-perceived superior world view. YOU may not know it if you live in Montana, but you and the others who have moved here that claim superiority are not respected or liked. When it comes to food you missed out on a lot. You’ll have to go back. My daughter goes to college at MSU and it’s a good excuse to go back. Yellowstone isn’t that far and if you make it to Bozeman Glacier is only five hours. Anyway, food & coffee. 1. Feed: have Panzanella - it’s so awesome!!! sourdough, organic arugula, bacon, sheep’s milk feta, sun-dried tomato vinaigrette, sunny side up egg A. Main Street Overeasy 2. Roost: awesome chicken 3. El Rode Food Truck! Best Mexican! You can eat in the bus or they put up some tents to eat outside. Or just pick it up and go. 4.The Daily: coffee, this is my main stop for coffee. They make all their baked goods. If that’s what you want go early as it’s so good it disappears fast. 5. Treeline coffee: after Treeline head on over to 6. Wild Crumb: for some of the best baked goods. Bread - pastries - tarts - cookies and sandwiches 7. Don’t go to City Brew 8. Montana Ale Works is ok 9. Dave’s Sushi As for coffee have a “bee sting” BTW, many people have dumped their lightly used gear and this town is active. If I ever need gear or outdoor clothing, as a lot is lightly used or new, I go to Second Wind Sports in Bozeman because I get there but not often enough. My best example, I took my daughter fly fishing for the first time. She loved it so much we went to Second Wind as Play It Again has ok stuff. Anyway, I got her a used Orvis Clearwater rod and reel setup for $85. New is $336 and sales are $248.60. After inspection, if it was used it was once or twice. The line was in perfect condition as was the rod and reel.

Storm Castle Cafe, right next to Grandma's Donuts, was actually on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. I've eaten there a few times. Sunday brunch is busy. Bar 3 in Belgrade is a favorite. Their Sunday brunch is terrific, and they're usually busy at night. Bridger Brewery is a good restaurant for pizza and beer, but if you want a more family friendly restaurant down the street with better pricing but not as upscale, I love to go to Columbo's Pizza. I love their tomato pie, and I usually get pepperoni or something with meat, but the flavor is awesome! Seven Sushi is my favorite sushi restaurant, and I always get the Jaw Dropper. Safron Table and The Rice Bowl are also excellent.

That hike looked awesome! We will be in Bozeman for an extra day in May and are looking for something to do. We will have bear spray and will bring it (as you suggested) but were wondering if you frequently see them on that specific hike or if you meant to have bear spray in general? Thank you so much for all the awesome recommendations, we loved watching this video as we get excited to visit the Yellowstone area again!

Bear spray in general is a good recommendation. Some thing around 10,000 btu's per the words of the gentleman who heads up the grizzly bear encounter. You never know when you will come across one with her Cubs. And the spray is more fast acting and non-lethal than a firearm. And you and the bear get to go home to your family

U did "ok" but as a 60 yr resident I would have to omitted all shopping/eating and focused on 13 of the myriad of natural wonders that abound which you will experience NOWHERE else. FYI The Madison, Gallatin and the Jefferson Rivers conjoin at Headwaters to form the Missouri. 1,2,3 Three not 2😁

Duh, like you know, there are three rivers that come together to form the Missouri, not two. They are the Gallatin from the left, the Madison in the middle, and the Jefferson from the right, if you are facing south. (It’s interesting to me that the Madison and Jefferson combine just before the Gallatin joins them, so I wonder what you would call that 100-yard-long river? To my knowledge, this small stretch of water does not have a name, so maybe it’s up for grabs even now! Hey, overall, do you think that the facts I’ve given MIGHT be why they call the town right next to the the confluence “Three Forks” and not “Two Forks”? From a Montana State University graduate

Just wanted to correct your information about the headwaters of the Missouri. You said that two rivers come together, Actually, three rivers come together to form the headwaters. Those rivers are the Gallatin, the Madison and the Jefferson, all named by Lewis and Clark.

I almost went to College there, but chose to go to Arizona instead because I had some friends going there. Arizona was super hot all the time, and the desert is more of the same everywhere you go. There isnt much to do in the outdoors in the desert, its too hot and too unforgiving. The worst part of Arizona was the kids from Orange County and LA. These kids all come from money and privilege so they aren't very down to earth. They were all super materialistic and vain. I had nothing in common with the average student and UofA and it was one of the more depressing and lonely times in my life.. Montana provides the things that I enjoy doing whether I am spending time with people or not. I like to hike, camp, soot guns, fish, ride dirtbikes and drive 4x4's. I would have been in an environment that was beautiful and I would have been around other young people who shared my interests. The Student population would not have been douchebags from LA either. They would have been people who were more like myself. I regret attending UofA. In hindsight Montana would have been a lot more enjoyable and I would probably be a happier person with life in general had I attended a school in such a beautiful place..
