Hey there, Curator from the History of Diving Museum here. I looked up your video because so many recent visitors have commented they heard about us from you. Thank you for including us! We're very proud of this museum, and always happy to have more people learn about it. As a local I also have to say you really did the Keys justice with this road trip.

I'm so glad I took my own dad (RIP two years ago) to Key West many times. He was of a generation that saw much turmoil and disaster from the great depression to the 2nd World War. I was able to give him a taste of positivity via our travels and the association with my 'doodle' dogs Buddy and Star. Love you, Dad.

I lived in Key West for about 2 years in the mid 50’s. I was in elementary school. Great place for kids back then. Rode our bikes everywhere. Went fishing, caught conch (legal then), lobster, lizards. Saw coral snake. 7 mile bridge was 2 lanes.

Love the Florida Keys. We went there pretty much every year for a week back in the 1990s with my father, his best friend who lives in Florida and my brother. Initially we went around Spring Break when my brother and I were still in college. The first few years we rented a house in Marathon and then later my dad's friend had a condo in Key Largo for a while. His friend would either drive or tow his boat down there and we would spend the week scuba diving, snorkeling and fishing. In the evenings we'd go to Blockbuster and rent "Keys Classics" - aka a bunch of action movies. At least one day during the week we'd take the drive down to Key West for the evening. Great memories.

The 3+ hour drive went by so fast with the top down, wind in my hair, sun on my face, and the smell of salt water. My drive was straight through but I will definitely do this drive again sometime, so thanks for the tips on stops to do along the way!

Great trip, thx - I had the privilege of being born & raised in old Florida - going South on US 1 for a weekend trip was dotted with small settlements of orange grove & sugar cane fields appearing every few miles (Mom & Pop stuff, 1 gas station, a general store, maybe 1 stoplight & a post office) & then navigating the old bridges was exhilarating & scary at the same time - we held our breath & drove real slow - at noon we would back the boat out into the water & waterski out to those tiny lil islands for picnics & a day in the quiet sun & sand (not a sound in the world but the lapping waves) - a different time then as the restaurants & souvenir shops of today had real families living in those wooden dwellings with no air conditioning or TV, just living in the slow, warm, humid glow of Florida life - a tad melancholy now, as history proves, every life becomes a museum - ah, the way we were ... thx for memories ...

Great story. I grew up in Miami in the 1950's/60's and know well what you are relating too. Different place altogether now and few know what we had or experienced in those days! As kids we lived on our bicycles with a fishing rod. Left at daylight on the weekend and didn't come home till dark burned red from the Florida sun. Scrounged for soda bottles to get some spending money, etc and went all day on 75 cents or so! Caught lots of fish and our mothers would fry them up the next night for dinner! Kids today don't know the freedom we had in those days. We knew how to fish, we worked for the little money we could get to spend and we knew how to repair our bikes when they threw a chain or got a flat...........self sufficient 12 years olds we were!

Thanks . I made that drive many times in the 1950's . My mom & dad moved down from Jersey and for me it was like moving to another Universe . The 7 mile bridge a was two-lane-wooden that was daunting . It creaked & almost touched the water of the Gulf . Almost none of the places you visited were there , except Coral Castle . However , NATURE was there in all it's glory . Fish , conch shells . If it's still there , next time visit the John Pennekamp State Park in Key Largo , the World's only underwater park . They also have the bar where Bogart's film Key Largo was filmed . It was another time , but the water brings it all back home . Thanks for the memories . :)

Durango, John Pennekamp is still there and you can camp there, snorkel and take dive trips. The Carribean Club is where Key Largo was filmed. And, you can actually go on the original African Queen boat for a day cruise or dinner cruise. It's located next door to the old Holiday Inn on US1. If you make it back, stop at the original Mrs. Mac's Kitchen for the cottage potato fries and key lime pie!

I worked in homestead and lived on Key Largo. The drive to work at 6:00 am was incredible for the sighting of local wildlife. Try an early morning trip!!

I drove and flew all over Florida, but in 30 yrs, never made it to Miami or The Keys! My vacations included multiple stops from PA to Florida, and there is just so much to see and do. But I did make it to Hawaii, the Caribbean and Mexico.

This isn’t John-this is Lucille his wife. I really like your demeanor. You seem calm and sincere, Unlike so many travel bloggers who are trying to command attention to themselves. Also it seems like you have a really sweet relationship with your father. Thank you for this video. I shared it with our grown kids and grandkids.
