I use KP's 6"light with metal spoons and 6 1/2 surf fishing. I own 8 KP's. They're one of my favorite fishing reels to use. To make my rods and pair them up with these reels.

The trick is to turn the handle side facing the ground when you casting and control the spool with your thumb. If you have an overwind the line will spin off the reel easier than getting bunched up with the handle. When starting off you have to cast gently untill you have the confidence.
@untraceablefishing3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment bud… we must try casting with one (even if it’s just to see how)… but yes, start slowly and build up the confidence.

The old timers used to say that they used a wet sock filled with some sand to practice casting with and used an over the shoulder whipping action. The 6" wide solid wooden ones were favourite reels for use as swim bait reels for large sharks and the guys used to parm the spool with purpose made leather pads. These would often be grooved and literary burnt, while trying to stop a big Zambie or blackfin and smoking during the fight

After watching this video decided to scratch around on the interwebs and bought myself a KP for kak and giggles... I have some painful memories with the KP but just love the idea of the simple centrepin reel.. Such a nice fight with these reels

Thought I will let you know, I still have my late Father`s Bakelite 11,5 ft rod and `like new` Penn 500 reel. It must be over 60 years old. It used to catch seriously big fish in the years when the rocks on the beach was invested with mussels, crabs, and the like. Fish was plentiful those years.

Lekka video guys... I'd like to share two things.. the kzn ol timers taught me the "scaburator" I still use 9' spoked for vertical spooning for Cuda... The trick to slowing it down is curl right hand fingers under and around the spool bottom to apply finger tip pressure on the underside of the spool. Failing that... it's also known as knuckle curry when unexperienced fingers become involved with the handles 😂 Greg

Thanks for the awesome comment🔥 Knuckle curry… lol🤣🤣🤣 Crazy how versatile these reels are, and how nothing has changed for years!

Any known record distances which guys are casting with the KP ?
@untraceablefishing5 ай бұрын
Hey bud, really can’t answer this- it’s not really something we use… I’ll ask the guys who do cast them though👍🏻
@wesleywillard-fk8vs2 ай бұрын
All boils down to the right balance...rod reel,mono or spoon,trick here is not distance casting but I would say around 100m with a nice 3oz spoon and 7in Kp max 20lb mono,12-13ft rod

Keith Palmer manufactured its reels here in Bazely on the South Coast but the factory was moved after he passed away. It was a staple for Indian fisherman during apartheid years. Still my all time favourite reel.

I used the side cast variation, it casted like a grinder. The only negative was the retrieve speed for me.

@untraceablefishing3 ай бұрын
It’s the 10 inch… but it’s not a drag, just to tighten the whole reel up.

What is line retrieve per crank 10 inch reel?
@untraceablefishing3 ай бұрын
I think it’s about half a meter per crank (plus minus)
