Throwing a knife is also a great way to abusively test a knife, it'll pretty much reveal any weakness in the heat treat/tempering process, handle, and every other part of the knife.

***** Not necessarily. Besides, it can be something to distract/occupy their attention (the idea is that it would kind of "shunt off" their actions for a span- that can be enough to let you do something else). If it's your ONLY blade, you generally wouldn't do this.

I think that was a quote from George Silver, from the book Slash &Thrust by John Sanchez. I read it twenty years ago, so I may be attributing the quote. Dave specifically says that this is just for fun, and for the reasons that I quoted above. I'm just weighing in on the side of the No-Throws.

the thing that folks need to understand about thrown projectiles as weapons of either offence or deffence, is that cultures who used them, did so as an opening move more to distract an opponent from your charging advance as you closed in to melee combat. Vikings threw knives or axes before charging in with swords, Native Americans threw Tomahawks before rushing in to close range, or before a retreat. Ninja threw Shuriken and small darts and knives as a distraction before a charge or retreat. throwing is not an attack intended to kill. it is a distraction from the actual attack. yes a thrown weapon can kill but that was not it's purpose. I agree totally with you Dave, DON'T THROW YOUR WEAPON!! it's a neat trick to pull off, and fun to play around with, but unless you rush toward or away immediately after....don't do it as a deffence strategy!

I can throw anything, and it is all about distance. You watch closely how it hits and you will know whether you need to step back or forward. I've thrown tomahawks, hatchets, axes, kukri, lawnmowerblades, gutter nails, machete, it's all pretty easy. I have the distances worked out, after you do it a while you just get those-you know when to throw. Good video-he knows exactly what he is talking about.

i used to be able to throw knives like that in my sleep practically, i absolutely loved the feeling of getting them to stick over and over again. but after several shoulder surgeries (6) in each shoulder, I can't even throw a dart anymore. excellent throwing dave, and i knew you were gonna say 12 ft. thats the distance I figured to be the most accurate and consistent back in my throwing days.

The old tomahawks had a straight rounded handle often with a slight taper (as opposed to a camp ax with a curved grip) to make throwing smoother. Using a throwing knife or tomahawk in a combat situation involves a great deal more than just throwing -- or throwing away, your weapon. These techniques were not developed on their own but as a part of a whole martial arts system which puts it in a different context.

I have an old dead pine in my yard, I cut it down and left the stump about 6 feet tall so I would have something to throw our knives at. We have tons of fun playing games with our throwing blades. It is very cheap target practice, builds great hand and eye coordination and is just plain fun.

Also, is there any particular balance the knife has to have to be a good throwing knife? Thanks
@fulltangclan9 жыл бұрын
Its possible throw anything with a point. Balance is a preference. Tomahawks are head heavy and most conventional throwing knives have a middle balance point. No spin throwers have either a handle or blade heavy balance.

Dave, Probably a silly question but if your throwing at a distance of four paces, (12 feet), could you double your distance to eight paces or 24 feet and have the same result??? I also agree with your first statement that throwing your primary knife / tomahawk is not wise......
@robertanderson22859 жыл бұрын
Judge Roy Bean In theory, yes, but practically, you won't be as accurate, and your knife won't spin the same every time, so it won't stick as often. Better to hit what you're aiming at, than to see your knife flying through the woods beyond the tree. I've lost and broken a few that way. If you miss the tree, there will be a magnetic rock behind it every time.
@fulltangclan9 жыл бұрын
There are different distances for all of the rotations. Its not always as easy as doubling your one spin distance for a two spin throw. My one spin is about 11 feet and my two spin distance is at 18 feet. There are also blade throws. 1/2, 1 1/2, 2 1/2 so on and so on.

So Dave - your showing repeated and repeatable hits. It is obvious practise and your dedication to working with that as a tool and knowing how to do it, no matter what. Your just using something in that 0 to 14ft and keep mixing it up and offering repeated good dull thuds means the knife is not hitting punky wood, but diving deep into goo hard wood. Thank you for showing some technique to give us knife breakers some help on this. I carry a couple of them, but would like to work on it in case I did have to hit something at close range. Cheers!

***** yeah, throwing by the handle (the better way to do it in most cases) is pretty straightforward. Throwing by the blade is a bit risky for my personal tastes, and it's trickier to do properly.
@jamesritchie68999 жыл бұрын
DFX2KX By the blade is not only the best way, it's the professional way. There's nothing risky about it. The problem is that most "throwing knives" aren't throwing knives at all. Including the one Dave is using. No two knives have the same natural spin, and taking three and a half steps is just wrong. You don't flip a knife, you let it flip itself. Judging distance is important, but that ain't the way to throw a knife. Do that from sixty feet, and then I'll buy it. Three and a half steps is just child throwing.

Great throwing Dave! Throwing knives and tomahawks are a great way to entertain yourself while in the woods. Ive been throwing for years and prefer the tomahawk as it seems to be alittle easier for me to get that perfect hit. A solid heavy knife is required to do well and it seems you found one. The hide handle rocks.

If you had a predator type animal coming at you such as a mountain lion or a coyote would you throw the knife before it got to you or wait for it to get in close and then go to work on it? I understand that the best way is not to get in to the situation in the first place so for the sake of the argument lets say the animal is rabid and charging and you have no choice and no gun.
