Throwing Rectangular Plates on Pottery Wheel.

In this video I explain how I throw the rectangular plates on the wheel. You may use a slab technique to make a rectangular plate. I used to use that technique also. When I make long plates, I felt I want to add something more interesting character in the plate. When I found this way to make a rectangular plate I was so excited and made a lots of them. The title reminded me of a video in which a machinist used some gearing to control the relative path of a cutting tool to a work piece on a metal lathe. He used this technique to carve various polyhedra, including a cube; on a lathe no less! The plates are beautiful. It makes me wonder though. What kinds of interesting geometries could be thrown by using machining techniques on wet clay; but using rollers instead of blades to keep in the spirit of throwing clay rather than cutting into it like a piece of bar stock.

Thank you for watching. The reason to use this technique is giving the momentum to the flat plate. I use slab technique for some of my work. The slab has own beauty also, but when I make long plate I always use this technique. In my case it makes huge difference when I use them. When I present food on top I still get excited each time. I have same length long plate with slab technique in my kitchen. It is fine, but doesn’t excite me as much as throwing one. Anyway best thing is try it! Let’s make more pots😊
