Time for gears and lockers in the Land Cruiser 80! Today I'm disassembling the front and rear axles, removing the 3rd members/differentials, and getting ready for a gear and locker upgrade. Follow along as I show you how to disassemble your Toyota axle! By the time we're done, this will be so much more enjoyable to drive, and so much more capable!

Yes, I think you stabbed us purists in the heart when you said an LS swap, that I-6 is so cool and you rebuilt it too, should last forever. I think the 4.88's are a good choice, but I'm just being friendly because I don't know what the stock gearing it, but highway friendly may be nice especially if you do up the transfer case to make it more able off road, maybe you can maintain a better on road gearing. I get saving money and you have spent a lot on this thing, I may be too late, but I'd opt for front and rear lockers. I had both on my late Bronco and while I didn't use the front locker a ton, it was sure handy when I needed it. Plus if you use air, I think you can use it without the rear locker, because you can custom select. On the Bronco, I think you had to have the rear locker on to have the front locker if memory serves me well. Still love the videos, even if you do an LS swap, save the 1FZ for me so if I get an LC soon enough with tons of miles, I can buy yours😂

I’m the opposite of a purist, sorry to disappoint! Haha. I did go with lockers front and rear and have some videos on that. Stock gearing was 4.10.

There is a thread on the axle mounting flange that you can thread a metric bolt in and tighten it to pull the axle from the hub

People will always criticize and give their opinions, but always do what makes you happy, and if you have the time and money, why not improve something that you will use for a long time? In the end, we will take nothing with us to the other side. Cruiser Gang

Yes, moto riding and repair videos and home repair diy stuff too please. Really enjoy this channel. As for the swap recommend keeping the 1 uz. It is easy for one to lose their way when rebuilding. recommend to save money, energy and time resources for unforseen circumstances

Here’s what I did to save money. I put an Eaton truetrak LSD in my rear and an ARB locker in the front. My reasoning was I don’t think I’ll need the front locker but would be happy to have it when I need it. And then I can have the LSD in the rear for when ever even when in RWD. Looking forward to the LS swap!

I had some serious PTSD watching this video. I redid my gears and added lockers late last year. Good call on the jack to help remove the third member. I didn't have that and just muscled when removing and reinstalling. I went with 4.88s and front and rear arb lockers. I was on the fence about the front but just ended up biting the bullet. I had Marlin Crawler do the complete rebuild and I did the install. I am satisfied with their work. They had a rear third member so I just had to ship my front. I recommend having a shop doing the rebuild so you can focus your time on other things 😉

I have a 1st gen tundra with 4.88s, harrop elocker in rear and trutrac up front. Thing is a beast!… killer 80! 😎🤙 also, you can’t go wrong with the 2uz! Its super reliable and over built like you mentioned. It runs like a sewing machine.

I’m building a 93 XJ gone through the axles already with 4:56 gears a trak Lok in the rear and a Spartan LSD with Chromoly axles in the front, it has 90k miles so I’m just doing timing chain oil pump , did the head gasket last year. even though you’re building a Toyota it’s the inspiration I get of you wrenching, I got the XJ because I wanted a project to build with my daughter, and we’re getting it ready for next summers trip to Alaska anyways keep it up , your rig is going to be yours not a copy something a shop built

Front fluid is corrupted with the moly grease from seal taking a dump. Just soups on into the diff basically…. At least I’ve had it go that way on mine.

True, pinion bearing is also shot as I found out after tearing the 3rd apart!

I noticed when you were removing the U-joint bolts on the front drive shaft you were loosening the nuts instead of loosening the bolt head end of the bolts. Toyota uses locking nuts, look for small bumps on the nuts faces. Hopefully others will see this and not make the same mistake.

Garage looking great man, well done so far! IMO I would do E locker, I've got ARBs, and they are great, but if I had to do it again, I'd go E locker just for reliabilities sake. I actually did 4.56s on 37s, but I do have an under drive gear in the TC, so you could always add that if 4.88 isn't enough gear.

If your going to do a ls conversion go and check out marks adapter's here in Australia they are ls conversion specialists for landcruisers and all so go for air locker front and rear

Good stuff, I would definitely put in a front locker while doing gears, just so I don't have to tear it all apart to add the locker down the line. You may get stuck in some mud or sand and want a front locker with out doing hard trails.

I'll be honest, really only here for the yota. I didn't watch the shop build. That being said, a 2/3 mix of Toyota and something else could be cool! Just a sprinkle of the truck and dirt bike at the end of the video

Film whatever you want. Someone will find it and want to learn from it just like me on the Cruiser. I'll keep watching those ones🤘 I'm in the planning process of a lift, gears and lockers. I already rebuilt the motor and new bearings on all four corners. Can you show me a list of all the lift parts you did? Also where did you get the tripid socket for the rear hub nut if you have one?

Awesome shop!! It needs a huge American Flag my friend. 😁 "Can barely get to these nuts" Sad! 🥺😜 Land Cruisers, trucks and dirt bikes....what could someone want more in their life? You have a KTM right? when you were attempting to remove the birf I was thinking...remove the wheel sensor...remover the wheel sensor!! haha. I have to do an axle rebuild on my 1997 Collector's Edition...it's just about to turn 300K. Mine is factory locked but if I were you I would go with the e-locker and use the factory switch. An 80 with an LS is heaven.

It'll get one soon! Need to finish the interior sheathing and everything and then we'll get to it. Yeah I have a KTM. As for the sensor - I've never had a yota with ABS haha

Mate you have a big 2 JZ there, there is just no reason to change that. if you want bigger in Australia you can get the 5L stroker crank. This engine with the right components can give you 800+HP. I am not against a LS but I am sure the FZJ is superior off-road.

Are you a mechanic or just a dude with a cool truck, some wrenches and free time? I’m asking because of a previous comment…need to get into the rear end for a locker replacement and my 80 is burning oil and likely in need of a shirt block or some piston work. Thinking about doing it myself but I am slight over beginner level as far as my mechanic skills.

I’ve been wrenching since I was 17, grew up in a family of mechanics, and previously worked as one for 3 or so years at a local motorcycle shop. I learned by doing and by breaking stuff

@@RM_Garage also, thank you for all the videos, it’s a tremendous amount of work and knowledge that you are putting into the public for free! I think I’ll give the rear end work a shot, but the engine work will probably get me in more trouble than I can deal with at my skill level right now!
