I’m super late to the party but this is an awesome video! Very educating and informative. Point blank explanation and it’s great to see a visual breakdown of how the gears actually look when switching them. Puts things into perspective for sure. Thanks so much for sharing! 🤙🏽😎

The option to be in low - low gear while in 2wd is really great. You can use this when trying to park a heavy boat trailer on a very steep paved driveway.

Do you need two gear drive transfers for this to work? Or can you use the chain drive tranfers?
@RM_Garage3 жыл бұрын
In the past you needed gear drive transfer cases but there’s a company making them for chain drive cases now called northwestfab.
@rifleman73132 жыл бұрын
I know that it would be more expensive but wouldn't an Atlas II 4 speed do the same thing in a more compact system. Atlas II transfercases also have an abundance of gear ratios. Just saying

Hey there, very nice and educating video...thank you much! I have an 88 4Runner, 4x4 and would like to do this upgrade. I am seriously new to this conversion. I have an spare trans and I would like to put this set up together to the stock, any suggestion where to get what I need in order to get that set up together? I’d really appreciate it.
@RM_Garage3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! It depends on your setup (transmission + transfer case). You will need top shifting cases, and if they aren't top shifting, you'll need to convert them. And then you need to decide if you want a factory case bolted up to a factory case (2.28 * 2.28) or if you want a factory case a 4.7 gear, which results in much lower gearing. At a bare minimum, you need: - 1 complete transfer case, top shift - 1 reduction housing from another transfer case, top shift - A dual case adapter - Optional 4.7 gear in transfer case

Hello again, thank you so much for your feedback, I appreciate it. I didn’t keep up with my responses until now, sorry about that! I just wrote precisely asking about some of what you commented here… I have my stock 2.28 transfer case, top shift, already set without the pin for the twin stick to work independently, I already have the twin sticks at hand. Also, I have another transfer case from another trans I have, 2.28, I can use the reduction unit from there with the adapter that I’ll get from Marlin Crawler, that works, right? Now, since I’m not a crawler, but I’d like the set up, how slow and effective is the 2.28x 2.28 set up, can you help me with the math, lol…? I know I still have the option to get a set of gears of 4.70 to have it in the transfer case in the rear with a 23 spline adapter, but I’m trying to decide according to what my intentions are and the time and money saving that I might have…please help. Thank you! Ah, I forgot to ask, about removing the pin for twin sticks to work independently, do they ave to be removed from both cases, including the one set up in the adapter or that one will already be set up for one stick doing just H neutral L…? That part I don’t understand… Thank you much again buddy!👍🛠⚙️

And about the drive shaft, what did you do in order to shorten the rear shaft to fit and extend the front one, if you don’t have solid front axel? Since I have spare shafts, can I cut it to size reinforcing it with another piece of it inside and weld it? How about the balance, would that be affected? That’s my other concern, the rear shaft and its balance….🙄🤔The front one I can extend it doing the procedure mentioned, however, since 4WD is not going to be active, only occasionally, I’m not concern about the balance or should I be…?😟 What do you think…🤔? Thank you much for your time and input!👍🛠⚙️

Thank you so much for the video, definitely I got the explanation I needed. I have a question y For you or someone that might help. I am not a rock crawler, however, my 88 4Runner has a mix of stock suspension and stock transmission. I have done body lift, drape front differential, add a lift in the rear and adjusted the torsion bar in order to have it lifted for bigger tires. I currently have 35’s on it. My question is, would it be good to just have dual transfer case with both cases being 2.28…? I was considering to get 4.70 gear set combination with a 23 spline adapter from marlin crawler, but it’s so expensive, plus it’s not even in stock right now only the competition set which is a little more expensive. And I’m not even a crawler, is it worth it? Please help me make the decision, I appreciate anyone’s input, thanks!
@RM_Garage2 жыл бұрын
Both cases being 2.28 is still better than a single 4.7 case because with a single case you are stuck with ONLY 4.7. So you will always be in very low range. With dual 2.28s at least you get the option between factory low and then 4.7(ish) low when doubled. However if you’re not crawling then maybe the money would be better spent on lockers!
@chmva20002 жыл бұрын
Thank you! So basically dual 2.28 will give me 84:1 which I'm OK with that... About the lockers, I'd need to find out about it, don't know much of lockers...
