I learned a lot from this video that I didn't know about flashlight design and quality. I know more about flashlights than I did yesterday and that is a good thing. Understandable that some of what he stated is subjective. I appreciate that Bushcraft412 took the time to make this video.

M21 is an older light with an XM-L. XML2's have done nothing but get more efficient since Cree introduced them. The latest U2 emitters are more efficient than a U2 from 2 years ago. The U3 and U4 are just higher output but at the cost of off tints. I prefer my battery tubes with springs at both ends. The P12 only has a spring in the tail. The Thrunite is sprung at both ends. The thin spring on the Nitecore is not surprising. The thickness of the aluminum on the Nitecore is the thinnest. The Nitecore has the thinnest anodization. Nitecore was notorious for cutting corners right up until about 16 months ago. The wiring in the Nitecore head I promise you is thinner cheap wiring with bad soldering. The emitter is likely an older XML2. The Olight tube is making connection with the head just fine. The electronics in the Olight are good quality. It is the anodizing on the Olight that is cheap. Olight has come an extremely long way. Thrunite pulls off quality builds at a lower cost because the guy who owns Thrunite also owns Fenix I believe. Parts a plenty. Thrunite has been a smash hit. Ive had all the P12's and PD35's. Only the latest P12GT is quality end to end. The older P12's have thin cheap aluminum, thin cheap anodization, cheap electronics one of them has a reflector with a small gouge in it out of the box. PD35's are how its done. Everything is quality end to end. They have better ergonomics, thicker anodization, thicker aluminum and top shelf electronics. I have had every version of the PD35 and all of them have been perfect from end to end. The P12GT has thermal regulation which is HUGE. The Thrunite also is thermally regulated. The PD35's are still timed.

I think the resistance added by the tail spring is negligible. I measured different tail caps I have on my multimeter and found ZERO resistance on any tail cap on any of my lights, from Fenix to olight to stream light and even cheaper coast lights. No resistance. The plunger is more durable in my eyes and the spring is the cheaper option. Even if there was a resistance I would venture to say it would be on the order of a micro ohm or two, again, negligible.

For the most part I agree, but two of my favorite lights in my collection have been unreliable at best. Those are the Steamlight which I now have to send in for repair because the switch is malfunctioning and the other is a Thrunite TN12. My TN12 has an issue with the tail switch. It loosens up over time until the light no longer works. This is my second TN12, the other was DOA from Amazon. I have a Olight S30RII that I like a lot and has been reliable. I have been thinking of getting the TC12, but I am hesitant to get one because of the issues that I am having with the TN12. I also have a Nitecore light that has been reliable as well and it's build quality is very good, but this light is expensive at $300 US you would expect it to be well built. I have not checked out any of the other Nitecore lights. I really like the Fenix lights as well, but I don't own any, maybe I should.

Interesting perspective for a video, but you're right: you can get the lumens and modes from the manufacturer. I guess my view would be slightly different (and that's ok), as I have lights for specific needs. These range from close up work, area lighting, exploring sub-basements and tunnels for which the blueprints have long been lost, and tactical/security. Lumens and modes are important when you work with very different spaces (single room vs warehouse or auditorium), and I'll change modes often when doing a sweep looking for an intruder. Tunnels are a different animal altogether, and I'll prefer a wider hotspot with lots of power over a tight beam, especially when there are side rooms and lots of pipes. If it's a plain tunnel, THEN I'll take a thrower, lol. Now, there were a few noteworthy things in the video. One being the omission of Fenix. Second one is the misconception that a stiff spring is better. I have double spring lights just like the TN12, and having excessive compression forces from both ends can damage cells. I have three cells that have divots or dented buttons, and I'd really rather not go around damaging potentially explosive batteries. Electrically speaking, the solid post for the positive contact is better than a spring anyway, and is more effective at preventing battery movement. By the way, the mode switch on the P12 is silicone with an indicator light inside it. The indicator is for the power level indicators and the built-in voltage meter, both of which are missing from the Thrunite. The physical reverse polarity ring doubles as an impact guard for 18650 cells with protection circuits on top.

Wow. Your analysis is that of an engineer. The man in the video sounds more like someone who is using the basic understanding of unregulated vaping mods. He is just saying stronger here, more copper here. The question isn't which has more copper or if something is stronger... it's how something works in the dynamic of the real world. As you mentioned, too much compression can damage the battery. I know exactly what you are talking about. I do not have the electrical or mechanical engineering knowledge that you have, but I do know that on one of my unregulated copper vaping mods, the spring is remarkably stiff and was too long., this caused some problem with the battery and it caused it to fail catastrophically during a vaping session. I know that it wasn't because of my vaping because I don't run unprotected cells down to empty and I don't use extreme sub ohm builds nor batteries other than panasonic. So I'm just really happy you said what you said. It seems a lot like engineering philosophy differences between the nitecore and the thrunight.

I'm planning on going to a 3rd world country for a very long time. A place where the power goes out and stays out for a week or so. I will probably need to provide my own lighting via my portable solar panel and through these videos I believe I'm making good choices. First ust splashflash - 4 of them. Low dispersed light but can run all night on one aaa rechargeable. Recharge is pretty quick and one can take one to the washroom, another can take one and cook dinner, another can take one and read a book in bed and I still have enough to read the fine print on tiny directions. Since the tiny batteries recharge so quickly I still have plenty of time to charge my phone batteries for the night. A very fine choice as was my choice of Solar panel based on videos like this. . All have been excellent advice. You offer a great service.

+Jay bird2963 ohh... you wont like my opinion on streamlights... but then again, I've never had the opportunity to tear apart a high end streamlight. I wont buy them because they use really outdated LEDs. If I'm going to spend that kind of money on a product I expect the best. It's tough for me to justify buying a streamlight when the LED is years behind the competition. Plus they label all of their LEDs as C4 LED technology... which is really dishonest. You never know exactly what LED is in them. Which I know the average person doesn't care, all they want is a light of certain brightness with certain features. But for me, I shy away from products like that. but my opinion could definitely change the first time I lay my hands on a high end streamlight.

their still the toughest lights in my opinion, I work as a millwright / welder at a cast iron pipe plant and work on all the machinery there. Our company supplies us with the rechargable streamlights the one I currently have has been in my tool locker for 6 years now and still holds it's charge for an 8 hour shift, I've dropped the thing from 40- 50 ft while it was burning and it didn't phase the light. I've worn the coating off the outside of the main body to raw aluminum and have never had any issues with the light. Just one tough light and bright enough to blind someone if it was needed for that. Our company has tried them all and recently looked into trying out the O light and thru nite products but the switches can't seem to handle the abuse our crew puts on them. our Millwright crew numbers 40 men all assigned Streamlight flashlights and we also use their head lamps as well and they are just as tough. For the money spent I think they are tough enough for anyone to use and the money spent will give them a dependable light that will last them for years to come. That's just my hard use review of their products and why I would trust them as my EDC light in any of their line because I know they are just tough lights.

Anybody remember when the 'TM 26' came out; few years back? Well, instead of useing what MOST manufactures used for the contacts, which are SPRINGS, that 'light' used plain old cpooer... I THINK copper- might be brass... flat LEAF-spring contacts. One of THE main selling points for me was the company making a deal out of being able to use TWO 16340, one on top of the other, in place of a single 18650. So, instead of using FOUR of the longer ones, you could use EIGHT of the shorter ones. What they FAILED to warn about is the fact that the two smeller ones on top is LONGER than the single 18650!!! Not realizing this, I tried it out. I guess there must be some sort of circuitry to handle the extra voltage, because the light looked okay, didn't burn out, or any other 'bad'. HOWEVER, by having the smaller batteries in the device, it SQUISHED down the metal FLAT contacts, so when I decided to use the 'normal' batteries... NO CONTACT!!! Now, the only way to USE the flashlight (still works GREAT and I love it!) is to have a small disk of aluminum foil down where the contacts are so the batteries can make contact! I contacted Nitecore three times regarding this, asking if they could either replace the battery housing of the flashlight, or sell me one - NO F[]cking reply!!! Still, I would highly recommend this 'old' flashlight, warning the person to ONLY use the long batteries. Oh, I though that using a different 'button' or 'disc' material, such as copper, would yield better results, regarding the light output. I tried several materials, and according to the meter I use to measure light output_ NO measurable difference. When we talking about fractions of an inch, it is a waste of time and effort trying to get a BETTER or lower resistance. If wiring a house, BIG difference.

kinda apples and oranges worth the olight. it's an old design tactical light. Twisting the head to change modes was a solution for people who saw the light as nothing more than a weapon. a multi press ui seemed expensive and impractical. the control board and the output of the battery are the limiting factors in the lumen out. if you had a high current board that takes advantage of high drain batteries, then maybe add solder a stranded wire from one end of the spring to the other.

copper retainer is inferior to steel, if you count maintenance. I don't want to wash patina ever 3 months. also springs thickness is a choice not quality. double springs matter a lot, because a drop breaks contact.

thinking the best all around light at the lumen level nobody really needs to go higher than without special purpose is the Klarus xt11s. tightest beam on spot. spills over just wright for surrounding view. price is right to center and there is no better build. there is comparable but better is a hard find. Elzetta Charlie torch is where you need to go for stronger but still not brighter. nitecore mh20gt is another winner just a hair behind xt11s in throwing a tight spot. the double ,gold plated springs on the posi and neg sides of xt11 battery chamber is a unique overkill for bang bang and boom boom... all the videos are great but hands on is my opinion generator. thanks to pm101 and such for pointing out the general direction a torch will take you and for how much money.

Not exactly fair comparison for Olight as the equivalent Olight is the S30. Also how can you make the judgement that the spring in the Olight tail cap is sub-standard to the Thrunite when you have not taken it apart. Another point is the way you talk about body thickness and dismiss this as Thrunite was not the thickest.
