I am a 58 year old japanese businessman. I always liked simulations , over the last 20 years I have bought many different Joysticks and systems. Rarely had a good experience with smaller companies like crosswind, they always promise you superior quality but in reality it is hardly the case. Those things can break also very easily. I always looked for the best solution so I gave many small companies a shot and will not anymore. The things I bought by thrustmaster are cheaper in the costs and holded up as good as the much costier ones. These days my employees if they happen to buy something new bring it to my office and I will be the first one who will test it. I like those pendular rudder pedals, but they cost more than the warthog hotas set which is not an option financial wise for most people I can expect.

You are a 58 year old Japanese businessman? You've go perfect first born American English dialect. These days your employees, if they happen to buy something new? bring it to your office and you will be the first one who will test it? If I buy something new, I take it home and *I'm* the first one who tests it. Do you think pretending to be an old wise Japanese businessman makes your opinion seem more relevant. I guess if I were pretending to be a prominent Japanese businessman, I would find an image of an older Japanese man in a suit but I wouldn't choose one that would come up on a google image search with the name Kunio Inoue who is 68 not 58 at the time of this photograph.

I totally agree on the pricing being a bit steep - I picked up my HOTAS Warthog during one of the many times they went on sale and felt like it was an incredible value for the money. I figure these are going to be the same!

Compared to CH Products and Saitek, yes they are expensive. However, compared to FDS rudders which costs over 1000 USD, they suddenly not that expensive. I have my Warthog for 4 years now and I still love them. The MFD was a bit of a bummer, but they're great for FS17 or ETS2/ATS. I have have both the CH Products and Saitek rudders, but I had to open them up every 3 to 4 months to remove all the sand and dust to make it smooth again. And like Robert was saying, they have a very clear and distinct center position. This is not a real problem for fixed wings, but with rotorcraft, you'll need more subtle controls.. I won't be running to the stores when it comes out, but it will definitely on my shopping list. On the other hand, people are also crazy enough to pay more than 1000 dollars/euros for a IPhone. And most people use a phone for only 2 years.. It's not cheap, but this will be a purchase that lasts easily for 10 years..

Whatever the market price is. I used it for 3 years now, it's really good (has some reaaaally minor flaws to it) but it's good. Those pedals though, are really too expensive especially compared to their counterparts such as MFG Crosswinds or similar.

I absolutely love my HOTAS Warthog. That being said, the T16000 also has HallEffect sensors and I think uses the exact same centering spring as the Warthog -- might give it a look if you want to save a few dollars... but the feel of the HOTAS Warthog (weight, mostly metal construction, etc) is just incredible.

Warthog is definitely the current “gold standard”, but there is a Russian company putting out a really good dual throttle control and joystick...roughly comparable in price but like these pedals, they are easily adjustable and very well built (all metal).
@FlaminSquirrel

The Warthog is definitely NOT gold standard. It has a poor quality plastic gimbal with no bearings. VKB and Virpil both offer far superior sticks.
@MikeLitoris66

Far from gold standard compared to VPC/VKB designs. Especially Warthogs plastic gimbal is pure crap compared to newer designs. I had Warthog hotas but replaced the stick with T-50 and it's a lot better, accurate and 9000 times better quality. Will replace the throttle soon in future.
@escalator9734
@escalator9734 6 жыл бұрын
@@psyrixx I know this is 4 month old and useless to reply, but the warthog is definitely not mostly metal construction. The stick handle is potmetal on the outside, but the base and most imporantly the gimbal is cheap plastic. There's also the stiction problem, coming form 2 oversized pin (or undersized holes), as well as the un trimmed plastic gimbal parts. The throttle is pittyful, with the handles in plastic, mounted on plastic axes with bad tolerances, inducing some or lots of play depending on the particular batch. All the weight comes from the 2 metal base plates (yes, 2, no reason why aside the weight marketing) and a stack of absolutely useless metal bars screwed on the inner plate, to add even more weight. I got it for 300€ buck and it's still overpriced

If pedals are sliding, and you can't put them against a wall, the easiest fix is a thick MDF base. Add rubber feet feet for wood floors, and speaker spikes for carpet. Cheap, easy and effective.

Despite the good review, and the fact that I really do like these, definitely take pricing into account. When these guys go on sale might be a better time to buy if cost is an issue. Like I said in the video, I got my set for free because I pestered the Marketing guy from Thrustmaster while I was at Oshkosh (I was already going to get these anyways) and he obviously saw a promotional opportunity. The one thing I didn't want this to come across as is a sales pitch and according to several replies on Reddit I failed at trying to avoid that. 😅 In any case, full disclosure -- don't trust me!

I have this fixed on my motion rig in front of my racing pedals, the two holes in the back fit perfectly on the plate. No need to remove the racing pedals. My sitting position is a bit further back, where my X-56 controllers are fixed, without removing my racing gear changes, and handbrakes. But I found the rudders too sensitive in DCS to keep the SU-25 going straight after the landing. It tried to curve down the initial movements, maybe not enough, or are rudders really that sensitive.

7:12 Curious because MFG use the same kind of HALL sensor (Melexis) than Thrustmaster.
@psyrixx
@psyrixx 6 жыл бұрын
That is strange because the MFGs never felt all that precise. Again, it might be due to the slight rotation or the fact that their drivers are only reporting ~4096 or whatever positions on each axis? These guys - lightest pressure results in different input, the MFGs I feel like I have to move a bit before anything happens, and by then it's already moved too much. AGAIN my MFG are first generation though! The newer Crosswinds (third gen) may well be better than what I've been working with.
@thebigdustin
@thebigdustin 6 жыл бұрын
Can confirm, Crosswind's use Hall Effect sensors on all axis. Crosswinds are probably more accurate than the TPR pedals simply because they are wider. More leverage, longer throw, more precise. Just gotta get them really tuned to feel nice.
@psyrixx
@psyrixx 6 жыл бұрын
I didn't do much tuning with either set! I must have just gotten a bum release of MFGs or something, because they've always been "twitchy" - the firmware and configuration screens always have the axis "jumping" slightly even when I'm not putting in any input (ie: MFGs sitting there doing nothing with no feet on them) so I just assumed they were regular 'ole peripheral sensors (I'm a software guy, not a hardware guy, so forgive me if I sound like an idiot here). And AGAIN - I love my MFG Crosswinds, they saved me from the Saitek Pro Flight slider pedals. I've been using them for 5-6ish years. You wouldn't go wrong picking up a set of MFGs. Even with the "jittery-ness" my set feels really good. I can only imagine the Gen 3 pedals are that much better, which is why I specifically mention that I'm using Gen 1 in this video. The Thrustmasters do feel much more like a real world set of Cessna / Piper / DA40 rudder pedals - I've been flying those types of aircraft enough to say that without question. Is that worth the cost of the TPR? ...well, I did mention in the video that TM products tend to go on sale rather frequently... :-)
@Sokol10
@Sokol10 6 жыл бұрын
To by fair, MFG Crosswind of 1st generation use an less tech USB controller and contactless sensor (analog bus) than 2nd/3rd revisions, who start use MFG SIMM8Rge USB controller and Melexis HALL sensor (similar to used by Thrustmaster Warthog and Saitek X-55/56) in digital protocol. Probable the main factor for feel PR more precise than Crosswind is due the use with heels on floor, users of VKB T-Rudder has the same feel.
@psyrixx
@psyrixx 6 жыл бұрын
This is great information regarding the USB controller and analog sensors. I've never used the 2nd/3rd generation MFG pedals (and mentioned that in the video) and therefore have no idea how they feel in comparison.

I did do quite a bit of asking around among the guys I fly with regularly (lots and lots of MFG-users) and none of them reported any catastrophic failures like the one you had there. Not sure what versions they were using though. I just ordered a set of MFGs V3, but I will say that while they are probably a pretty substantial upgrade in tech, precision and feel, I never really found myself longing for a different set of pedals while I was using my CH Pro ones. Only now I have them in storage and find myself longing for *any* set of pedals while I'm forced to use the twist-axis on my VKB... yuck! The CH ones I have are old enough to have a driver's license by now... they are from 1995 or 1996 and I've been using them for years on a cheap gameport-to-USB converter. They still look, feel and work like new as far as I can tell. They were so good in fact that when I acquired a set of Saiteks for free I switched back to the CH ones almost immediately. In fairness: That's probably also due to the fact that the Saiteks were the worst pedals I've ever used. Clunky action no matter what I did to that tension-knob, nearly impossible to make small adjustments around the center position and due to their width and stance kinda uncomfortable - at least for me. Having only seen pics/videos of them, I'm not sure I'd even want those TM ones, even if they weren't insanely expensive. I mostly fly WW2 stuff and the occasional jet in DCS ... and AFAIK (but not 100% sure) the sliding action that CH, MFG, Saitek and others use is actually closer to what most of the planes had back then.

been using MFG pedals for over 8 years still as good as new have changed components to "tune" them to my preference. Disclaimer only ever used CH pedals and i had to import those from the USA because in 2013 usable pedals did not exist in the UK. my MFG pedals work just fine.
@ackattacker
@ackattacker 2 жыл бұрын
I think some of your criticisms of the MFG are a little unfair. You can purchase them with the same style of "combat pedals" that the TPR comes with, which work well with heel on floor (which I also prefer). I have mine mounted to a wheelstand pro rig (any of these high end pedals deserve to be mounted to something IMO) and the extra height the rig provides makes the combat pedal height perfect when used that way. The new version also fixes the defect where the epoxy can break, there is no epoxy in the new style. The MFG's also use hall effect sensors with high precision so not sure where you draw that distinction, in terms of precision they are identical. An additional thing to note is that the MFG can be ordered with a relatively inexpensive damper which really adds to the feel, people have adapted dampers to the TPR's but it's a bit of a kludge. Last point I'll make is that the MFG pedals have a larger travel than the TPR which I find more realistic for most planes, and I've flown many (8 type ratings). While the TPR's are high quality and you really can't go wrong with either choice, for less money I think the MFG pedals represent a better choice. Additionally, you are supporting a small business in Italy. Thrustmaster manufactures in China, if you care about such things.

Thanks for the detailed video, it convinced me to invest thrice the money and buy these instead of the Logitech rudders. It's certainly a deep cut, but similar to the Warthog Hotas you get a quality that is on a whole different level and so is the experience and immersion in the game. For decades, I played sims and sci-fi games with my old Logitech Extreme 3D Pro and while it gives you all basic controls in a neat setup, precision control is not a thing with twist-rudder sticks. Trying to taxi the recently released Messerschmitt BF 109G (MSFS) is next to impossible, as it relies heavily on brakes for turns. Can't wait for these pedals.

Hey there. I fly real word helicopters and tailwheel airplanes so I’m looking for something that would accurately simulate the real thing for hover and/or rudder realism for the Pitts landing or aerobatics. Have you flown taildraggers? If so how real do these seem? Have you tried them with the MSFS2020 Pitts?
@psyrixx

So as for how they operate they are the most realistic pedals I've tried. The one downside is they do not have a very realistic feeling amount of resistance although I'm sure you could adjust that with a different spring in the back. I don't have much taildragger experience (did some aerobatics training in a Citabria once) however these pedals operate very closely to the pedals in the C172s, C182, and M20J that I've flown several times. Apart from how "easy" the travel is they hit the mark in every other way.

I have two screws in place that the steel base of the TPR is pushing against, but I didn't take the time to mount it properly. That is the same location (and screws, actually!) that I mounted my MFGs to the plank. My Warthog is attached with some ABS Plumbing Pipe (4" diameter) with a screw-off cap for a drain clean out so it can be removed and stored. I'll actually be putting together a video showing some mounting solutions for the TPR pedals for hardwood / carpet / full HOTAS MiniCockpit setups.

Question, do real helicopter rudders have a spring to bring the rudder back to the neutral position? I see that most, if not all sim peddles do. I was watching a helicopter video that made it look like when you push the peddle it stays in position and the other peddlemoves the same amount in the opposite direction

They are much more realistic to use, so in my opinion they're plenty comfortable! Also easier to push forward and plant a heel into the floor to hold a particular configuration whereas on the flatter pedals you have to keep your legs flexed in position.

There is quite a price difference between MFG and TPR, MFG costs half of TPR and I must say MFG is doing quite a good job at that price tag. I find it quite unfair to compare it to a unit which costs double. Slaw Device or Baur's pedals would be a better comparison. About Warthog, while the stick itself is very good, plastic gimbal is a very disappointing choice by TM, they are known to crack and fail. When it comes to sensor and gimbal Virpil and VKB seems to do a much better job but again A-10 stick of TM is simply superior to anything else for my opinion. While I think TPR pedals are great, 500$ price tag is steep I prefer waiting the results of Baur&Virpil partnership to have more options.
@nexus888
@nexus888 3 жыл бұрын
In terms of the original sales price there is a big difference. But add to this the cost of sending the MFG and the difference becomes smaller. If I would buy the MFG + combat pedals + shipping to Australia the price wouldn’t be far from the TM TPR which I can buy in may shops here. Having said that I only wish MFG wasn’t so expensive to ship :)

What are your thoughts? I'm still loving them, they feel very close to the real thing!
@marshallallensmith
@marshallallensmith 6 жыл бұрын
They are as smooth as silk which is very welcome over some of the other types I have tried and the action of the pendular style movement is what make these golden for me. Although they are not "identical" to the pedals in the Bell-412 or other skid mount helo the option of having the differential braking was sorda resposible for getting me interested in trying fixed-wing flight. So I can not really say how close they are to a irl fixed-wing aircraft because I have no experience there but for rotorcraft these pedals absolutely kill the competition. Compared to slider and axial rotating designs these are in another world. So yeah I am a fan lol and last but certainly not least is the fact that they seem to be pretty bullet-proof because I am really tough on hardware and have destroyed a lot of joysticks and throttles in my sim days but these things seem to hold up like they are fresh out of the box and that was also a surprise because usually, pedals are "sticky" when new then they slowly get broke in and smooth out until finally getting loose and innacurate but these were smooth right out of the box and amazingly still are.

I use the Logitech Pro Flight rudder pedals and while they worked as a starting point in my flight sim adventures I've begun to hate them after about a year of use. They're plastic, lightweight, flimsy and the tension system is pathetic. Not to mention they swivel side to side rather forward and back like the TPR pedals do. Looking forward to upgrading in the future to the TPR pedals, thanks for the review.

As I expected not for desktop use, only for cockpit users that can mount them in custom pits. As for pedals that don't slide check out VKB's rudder pedals in terms of smoothness and accuracy they are "out of this world". Price is not even close to this you can get 3 sets and still have money left.
@psyrixx
@psyrixx 6 жыл бұрын
Does VKB make rudders that have brake axis? Legitimate question - last time I took a look their pedals were pretty specifically for helicopters with the exclusion of any sort of wheel brake axis.
@slims2503
@slims2503 6 жыл бұрын
@@psyrixx nope they don't have brake axis. You can use differential braking using their software or use a brake lever for Russian style planes. But for under desk use, they are unrivaled. They are compact, comfortable, easy to put away when you finish using them, and again in terms of accuracy they are fantastic. I simply don't understand why TM went for such a design, unlike the MFG and any other type of pedals these are extremely difficult to use under a desk without fixing them to the floor or jamming them in a wall. And for the amount of money they are asking I'd personally go for Baur or MFG. It would be interesting to see how the inside mechanism looks like for the TM product. If indeed they did increase quality of the internal components it is a good sign. Maybe we will finally see a decent stick from them to replace the warthog in the future.
@psyrixx
@psyrixx 6 жыл бұрын
What stick do you use? I've only used Saitek sticks and once I switched to the Warthog I've never looked back. I picked up a set of the T16000s to see if I could find a cheaper stick to recommend to flight sim buddies that aren't as into aviation as I am, and as something more affordable, and have been similarly pleased. Haven't had any issues with either in ... somewhere around six years of pretty heavy use (for the Warthog, T16000 is ~8 months of use).
@slims2503
@slims2503 6 жыл бұрын
@@psyrixx I have now a VKB Gunfighter newly bought a few months ago. But before this I have had a cougar which I upgraded to a warthog when it came out. Still have it today (warthog I mean) and it is still working thankfully after about 7 years of use. But it is still working because I always taken care of it, and it is a very maintenance intensive stick in my experience. Lubing it constantly, it is a pain to open up, had to change the O-ring, lube it, sand the gimbal and once a few months you have to reapply lube to it to mantain it's smoothness. Internally the warthog really is cheaply made, out of plastic. So, sadly, after the cougar with it's casted Zink alloy crappy gimbal TM learned nothing and brought to market a slightly improved gimbal still made out of cheap materials and prone to all sorts of defects. I think it is mainly due the way the gimbal is casted and when the molds are starting to wear out the gimbal starts having all sorts of imperfections, that translates to stickiness and prone to cracking. I was lucky with mine after I sanded the joint of the small inside ball and the "2 bolts" I had a very good experience, others around me did not. Comparing the warthog stick to the VKB stick is like night and day, I could not believe how different they are, and how much more smooth and accurate the gunfighter is compared to the Warthog. I really hope TM brings a really good stick to market, as unlike VKB and Virpil they really have a very powerful software. The perfect stick for me would be VKB/Virpil stick with TM software. Somehow also the throttles both cougar and warthog are really well done. But the warthog does have some electrical issues if you are unlucky and can have a bricked throttle.
