@thubprint3 жыл бұрын
I didn’t realize burning transformers was against the law as well! I’m a hard no against burning wire anytime it comes up but the legal side isn’t something I’ve thought about, makes sense the regulations would extend across more types of scrap. Those round cast aluminum things that weren't threaded are cake decorating plates. They're meant to sit on a shaft and spin so you can decorate without picking up the cake. Also, the table you picked up is a donut icing table. Bowls of vanilla or chocolate icing go in those holes and the tray of donuts sit off to the left.

I had a pretty big nostalgia hit on one of my hunts last week. I saw what I thought was a microwave that turned out to be 3 old computers, one was the same model as my very first PC from 20+ years ago (2000-ish) my mom was driving while I was loading stuff up and I picked it up with the biggest smile on my face and showed her. It couldn't even compete in this generation of computers but I might keep it as a bit of a "museum piece" or maybe building a decent PC inside that case. But I'll get far more out of it like that than I would scrapping it.
@thubprint3 жыл бұрын
That’s so cool!! There’s a big retro scene for stuff like that, people set up ‘time piece’ pcs with voodooFX cards and sound blaster cards on beige CRT monitors and run retro games on DOS. I don’t think I’d get much use out if something like that but another option would be the ‘sleeper build’, all new modern parts for a smokin pc inside a yellowed old case. I’ve got my old one around as well I’ve been wondering which direction to go

Like so many others I would dig more videos like this where you're processing your bins; I watch it as I do the same and often it's in them that I learn better more efficient techniques. I wanted to make a request for an instructional video. You seem to know a ton of different places for comparing prices and for selling scrap. Would you please do a video on how you find these places? What you look for, what and how you search. In my area I know of 2 scrap yards and that's it and I'm stumped as to how to find more beyond word of mouth with other scrappers; plus I think it would be quite rude to directly ask the yard, with whom I've built a good relationship, for a list of their competitors LOL.

Hey Thub, just a suggestion as I'm in Hvac. Easy way to get motors out of blower housings, a quick squirt of penetrating oil on the hub where it meets the shaft, wait 2 minutes and undo the set screw. Turn the whole thing upside-down and let gravity do its thing. Almost never gives me a problem. Also a cheap hub puller would not be a bad idea
@thubprint3 жыл бұрын
Oh penetrating oil! I don’t know why I hadn’t thought of that, that would make it much easier. I do think the method I found has the advantage of the motor already being partially broken down, but if a person wasn’t going to pull the copper out of the motor it would be better to keep it as big and heavy as possible 👍

The pieces of copper you got from the transformers - how would they be graded by the yard? As dirty no.2 copper?
@thubprint3 жыл бұрын
Well at the yard ‘dirty’ means there’s steel parts stuck on it, so yes it would all be #2. The burned stuff is #2 and the stuff with glue on it is #2, so there’s no quick and easy way to upgrade the value. That’s a lot if the reason I wouldn’t bother burning the transformers, it doesn’t improve the payout on its own

Well I can’t speak for all of Canada but I know here in Calgary they are definitely wise to the burned copper situation. It just makes the seller look like a criminal, so if it’s the first time they’ve ever met you, your info is definitely going in a file, and they are 100% willing to lock the gate on you and call the cops if they feel it’s justified. For a regular customer like myself they’d still buy it but the price is gonna be dropped down to the point where burning it off feels like a big waste of time

See, fellers and fellettes, this is why you save up on stuff. If only a guy had room, I would go as far as Thub here. As it is, I only get enough room in the shed for a few buckets, where the coppery- and brassy-bits go.
