0:28 It is not a "toy bamboo sword" it is a "bokken" and is usually made out of Japanese Oak which unlike European Oak floats in water, is moderately hard and more resilient to shocks, making it an ideal wood for manufacturing this practice weapon used in Kenjutsu and Aikido. Bokken are safer for sparring and practice than a katana, they are still lethal weapons in the hands of trained users. A famous legend to this effect exists involves Miyamoto Musashi, a ronin known to fight fully armed foes with only one or two bokken.

Miyamoto Musashi fashioned a long Bokken from a boat oar and beat Sasaki Kojirō to death with it. This was to prevent Sasaki's range from being an advantage in the duel since Sasaki's sword was longer and he was taller. Sasaki's students found it to be a dishonor to their teacher.
@clarkdavison40 Жыл бұрын
@@kacklerot Thanks for the extra information, I practiced Aikido for about 2 years when I was much younger. I have a Bokken and a Katana (modern replica) and spent some time reading about iaijutsu, kenjutsu and the history of related martial arts. That was soon after I discovered Aikido movements are derived from sword techniques. I saw some very impressive demonstrations including a 4th Dan who trapped a live katana strike to the head with his hands, right in front of his face. The practitioner inflicting the blow didn't seem to be holding back either.

Always good to see Beat Takeshi get work, the man is a treasure. But nobody should watch this movie without seeing Juzo Itami's A Taxing Woman first. The ultimate yakuza movie is an anti-yakuza movie. Takeshi contextualizes and humanizes yakuza; Itami, murdered by those pigs, has the last word on why those pigs shouldn't exist.

This is like the Japanese version of Cohen the Barbarian from Sir Terry Pratchett's Discworld... Cohen is a 90+ year old Barbarian Hero, an old, old man he is still absolutely deadly, he calls his gang "the Silver Horde" as none of them are under 80 years of age, but they are all death on wheels(one, Hamish, I think, LITERALLY Death on wheels!) one character explains to another that killing, rescuing maidens and winning against ridiculous odds against MUCH bigger Armies is all they've done, all their lives, and remarks that "Cohen DID get old, but only harder, like Oak"
