Great video; you confirmed my choice of the Yak based on the zip strip things; the variable bike locationing; and better lock and release mechanisms. Big thx for this informative vid.

I’ve got a Subaru Outback and looking at a swing bar hitch bike rack . However I only need it for 1 bike ( 2 at most). I’ll be driving cross country and need something durable and secure. If they don’t make a 1 or 2 bike version, maybe I could mount a set of traction boards ??
@AutoSensation2 ай бұрын
Yeah. That would work.

Good video. Thank you for posting. I'd like to know which one YOU like better?? Did one have more movement/play at the hitch connection than the other? (I'm leaning towards Yakima for my Bronco)
@AutoSensation3 жыл бұрын
They both have the same amount of movement/play when in a closed position. However, when loaded with 4 heavy bikes the Yakima seemed to swing out and lock into position better. The locking piece in the Yakima is metal whereas the Thule is hard plastic.

I have the Thule Apex XT Swing. The straps are different on mine, (not ratcheting) I find bikes bounce a lot to the point where I stop and check with more than 2 bikes.
@AutoSensation2 жыл бұрын
Thats not good. What kind of straps do you have?

Thank you for this video. You did an excellent job in giving an unbiased assessment of the two products. I am now much better equipped to make an informed decision when buying bike racks. Also, I've been educated on how to install the products. After reading many reviews, I've heard many pitfalls but never had a good visual as to what was actually taking place, until now. Again, thank you! I've heard that Thules are stronger and better built. What is your assessment after using both brands?
@AutoSensation2 ай бұрын
Both are built well but I would agree that Thule is slightly better built. Thule is what I am currently using

I saw some of this burned. As there are vehicles exhaust are located at the passenger back side . Ex. Santa fe Hyundai exhaust just toaster the plastic hinge. Why is this not being brought up by thule and yakima?
@AutoSensation Жыл бұрын
Good to know. I never knew that or had that in mind. I believe most hitch are high enough not to cover or the exhaust are facing downward.
@xiaohai5249 Жыл бұрын
@@AutoSensation I almost bought this. I was very excited to buy it . I saw this in our local fb market . There was a picture where the hinged plastic cover was melted and burned.. For a short while. I did not think about it. Afterwards it kick in me search more for it. There I found other vehicles has the same burn plastic issue. Thule and yakima will not say this in the public. Otherwise it will hurt there marketing. Buying this is a gamble. Especially if your exhaust of the vehicles is in the rear right side. My vehicle is a acura mdx 2009. Has exhaust both sides. Very potential to melt the hinge of bike rack side hinged.. You can take a look of the search engine at Google. Thanks kindly.. I bought the simple one . Thule apex xt.. thar is the safest for the vehicle I drive for now.

It appears the Thule provides more spacing to prevent the bikes from scratching, but if I'm only hauling 3 bikes, it appears you can space them out better with the Yakima. What are your thoughts?

I know it said This thule model can’t tilt down when it’s loaded To have access to the trunk. But can we still do it anyway? Or the mechanism won’t allow it ?
@AutoSensation3 жыл бұрын
The mechanism won't allow it. To access the trunk you will swing out to the right with the bikes loaded.

Does the Yakima rack bounces a lot? Another KZbinr review saying it bounced up and down quite a bit over bumps.

Yes. They both actually bounce a bit.

Thanks for the video. I was looking at platform rack since I like those better. But the factory hitch I got with my Tesla is limited to 160 lbs tongue weight. I do like the ability to carry more bikes with these style racks. Still haven’t decided but maybe leaning towards the Yakima.

Don't forget the safety issue of it being hard (or nearly impossible) for others to see your brake lights and or turn signals, something that has bothered me for years using my bike rack(s). Here's a DIY solution - kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6KppZ2rZqyar9E - and an off-the-shelf solution - autoracklights.com/order - I am affiliated with neither, just sharing.

I like the Yakima with one reservation - it doesn’t seem to be able to fit 4 adult bikes, whereas the Thule seems like it can. I see a lot of reviews on REI about the lack of space on the Yakima - how it’s really a 3 bike rack. What do you think?
@AutoSensation Жыл бұрын
Yes. I would agree. The Yakima seems just a little harder to fit 4 bikes. You really need to find the right spacing to fit four. On the plus side you can easily move the mounts to accomodate more easier than Thule.
