Thumb CMC Joint Palpation for Osteoarthritis (OA)

Test Procedure:
Support the patient’s hand with one hand. With your other hand, locate the CMC joint line on the volar surface (typically just distal & radial to the bottom curve of the thenar crease), and then press firmly with your thumb on the volar surface of the thumb CMC joint line.
Positive results:
- Pt. reports pain/tenderness (at CMC joint) with firm pressure
Negative Results:
- No change in pain
