I shoot thumb draw with traditional bows, but it's great to see this method is valid and can be successfully used in a modern context. Great video!

When I shoot a right hand bow, I see the trajectory path of the arrow. People call aiming techniques many different things, but we really all aim the same way. Your subconscious sets the arrow on a path. My arrow is in my periphery, but I can't tell you how many inches it is underneath the spot at 20 yards. I can tell you my point on distance is 27 yards. After that, I use a reverse gap above the spot. When I shoot a left hand bow, I can't see the end of the arrow, so you could say it is more instinctive, but I can more easily see the pitch angle of the arrow.

I'm really impressed that you're so accurate with the thumb draw. And that you're able to shoot off both left and right side of the bow. Awesome!

This has really helped with my right handed compound I shoot with my thumb. You may claim it isn't more accurate, but it's more instinctual and at least for me I could never come close to the same accuracy with fingers as I do with thumb. Maybe I just suck though.

Outstanding tidbit of information Brotha 👍👍.......all too often I get many fellow Archers that swear by certain ways of shooting archery, and the truth of the matter is.....everyone is different in stature, strength, and comfort ability in the way we all shoot archery. You make very clear sense, that your way is quite efficient in the alternative ways of shooting. I mean, let’s face it, archers in general, have only one purpose in what we do.......and that’s getting that arrow on target. Yours is a very good way of achieving that goal, and I think the thumb draw is one of those outstanding techniques, even in modern day archery. thanks for sharing, 😎🏹🏹🙏👍

Wow. I didn't realize thumb-draw was so difficult. My advise to people is to wrap a little of that Coban elastic tape around your thumb, grab the string with your thumb, pull it back, and release. Done deal. Nothing to panic about. ;-)

Thanks just tried on left side for first time works! I’ve used thumb a few years but never on wrong side (left) A low poundage bow if it doesn’t stack and you pull it back to your ear will give you some hi FPS numbers

Caleb, There is not much paradox when shooting with your thumb. I get awesome arrow flight on either side of the bow. Just gotta make sure you drop your thumb down the string a bit so your index finger doesn't push the arrow off the rest.
@robertbrandywine

Do you mean parallax?
@davisstellman
@davisstellman 3 ай бұрын
@robertbrandywine paradox is how the arrow bends around the riser of the bow because an arrow wobbles as it flies. This is not the same as paralax

It puts some pressure on the thumb when shooting with a glove/tab. When shooting with a ring, most of the pressure is held on the ring. Gotta give it a try!!!

Wow... that foc... finally found a vpa longbow at 58". Very reminiscent of angular bows by Egyptians and Assyrians... might aswell try the thumb draw. Living partially in Japan I have experience with kyudo and really think the horizontal hand position aids with the natural shoulder and rotational movement that triggers back tension. I'll make a video about that as soon as I get the bow. Got some cordovan left from my last batch of wallets... gonna make a thumb glove. We use deerskin and stiff leather for the thumb glove in Japan. It's a finger crossing technique rather than closing. Would have never thought years ago that I'll go away from primitive and longbows... but the modern trad movement, controlling the shot and ILF setups really made me wanna rebuild my shot and experiment with gap and crawls... at least to support my instinctive efforts. Cheers for all your content!

Outstanding technique Sir. I too find it very beneficial to the thumb draw method on left, or right handed bows. Have experimented your technique quite frequently, and personally have favored this method over the conventional three fingered standard draw. It just adds to the various techniques already in my arsenal.....great vid, thanks for sharing 😎🙏🏹🏹👍

Picked up a very light 30lb bow to develop good form and build up the callus on my thumb; was gifted a 60lb bow and I still shoot accurately but it definitely tires me out faster. Should I continue solely with the 60lb and just condition myself, or should I look for an intermediate (45) lb bow? Was a bit sad to go from shooting for hours on my weekends to just 30-45 minutes at a time. Either way, I guess it's time to do some more back/shoulder exercises.

Met you at Fat Shafts yesterday. I had the horsebow during open shoot. I'm curious to try thumb shooting, thx for the encouragement. Hope to take a class from you. Question about the vid: When you shoot the right handed bow with the thumb glove, I see your hand is on your face. But when you shoot the left handed bow with the thumb ring, I see your draw hand is floating next to your face. Can you talk about anchoring to your face? Is this still important with a thumb ring and thumb shooting?

This was an interesting video. I have shot recurve/flatbows for years and have now bought my first Korean Asian-style) bow. The bow has a relatively thick handle/arrow-past (it doesn`t swing in at all) and I struggle with that the arrows go to the right, which means that my "khatra" is not good enough, Yet.. See the bow, with right shooting, is near center shoot and that you don`t have any particular "khatra" when you shoot or do you use it? I will say for my part, after three months. the arrow at the right side and shooting with thumb release has gone very easily, but not the khatra. Yeah, I know I have to practice.. a lot. Do you have any suggestions on how I can improve myself? Thank you for a good and helpful video.

@aarondavenport3143
@aarondavenport3143 16 күн бұрын
No dude, that is the reason when you shoot with a thumb draw you put the arrow on the same side. You use kotra to make up for the loss of Archer's paradox. Why you are using your thumb is because you don't have to can't the bow which becomes more difficult when you're riding on a horse. It doesn't make too much sense to use a thumb draw if you're going to mount the arrow on the same side as you would in a Mediterranean draw.

Hello, I'm a beginner shooting and bought a leather thumb release ring. The only issue I'm having is that when I put on my thumb ring, the tip of my thumb goes numb if I shoot for a while. There's no pain, but I'm wondering if it's because the string is pressing against the joint? Do you know exactly where the string should go on the thumb to prevent this?

Joel, I shoot as left handed person. Holding the bow in my right hand.. When I shoot a RH bow (shelf on the left side of bow) using thumb release and attempt to bare shaft tune my arrows it seems to me that I see nock-left when my arrows are too stiff and nock-right if they are weak. This is what I would expect to see when shooting a left handed bow not a right handed bow. Does shooting with a thumb release change nock orientations when bare shaft tuning?

i struggled when trying it at first to due to the way most people on youtube explained the hold as well as how it looks to the eye. the mistake is to think hooking the index finger of the thumb is what gives you holding power but this will just hurt your thumb nail. try it this way. make a "pointing" hand with the last 3 fingers curled and the index finger straight. put the string in between your thumb and index finger and press your thrum into the the side of your MIDDLE finger at the 2nd knuckle while leaving the index finger straight. you can leave the index straight or LOOSELY fold it over the thumb, which most people find more comfortable. the main thing is to not use the index finger as a "latch". just pressing your thumb into you middle finger is much stronger than it sounds. you wont understand til you try it for yourself

But *why* do you do an air anchor when shooting the left hand bow?
@SHOTIQ
@SHOTIQ 8 жыл бұрын
I was experimenting with different styles. If you use a regular anchor on your face when shooting this style, the riser gets too much in the way of the target. I am actually looking on the left side of the riser. I have since moved my fletches back and I actually rest my face right on the shaft of the arrow, much more accurate than the "Air" anchor you are seeing on the video. Email me at joel@ironmindhunting.com with more questions.

This is just trying to adjust to a style that makes no sense to your shooting technique. If you're shooting a center cut bow, thumb release makes no sense. Doing it just for the challenge, is redundant. Get a traditional bow and shoot thumb release from the other side of the bow. Then you will see the advantages and the fun of it.
