Actually Tommy's lessons on Reverb helped me to understand how to play baseline independently from melody. I've struggled a lot with this techique. This video definitely will be a big help for a lot of people trying to learn Tommy's style :)

Thank you for these videos!! 🙏🏻 they have been a massive help to me in moving from just using my thumb to using a thumb pick, I was a complete mess on day 1 🤣 it was like starting again at the very beginning, and I’ve been playing for many years!

Great to hear! The series was stopped because of copyright issues hitting the channel, and the work to fix that took so long that I didn’t get around to this any more. High time I made a few more parts!

You are the best Tim! I shared this to my friend as I have learned from T.E videos. This method works guys. I started last September and I am now able to learn many T.E arrangements and have even started to improvise. Again, You are the best Tim! Hello, does anybody else has a problem with the sound of the 4th string while thumb picking? I play with thumb pick for some time and I find that my 4th string doesn't sound as it should, the 5th and 6th are fine but the 4th is not well even when I pick together with the 3rd ? Maybe I do not place my right hand as it should... I just wanted to ask if somebody has the same situation. Best regards to all thumb pickers!
@TimVanRoy2 жыл бұрын
Hi Peđa! No worries, the position of your picking takes some time to fully develop. If you have the impression that you can play through the exercises without any pressure on your picking hand I wouldn't worry about it too much and move on to the first songs (or the next exercises). Building (or deepening) your tone is something that you do over a long period of time!

Great lesson thank you. Im just getting into thumbpick usage, after playing with my bare fingers for years. Do you have any recommendation on your tommy lessons in terms of progression? E.g. starting out with luttrell or fuel probably wont do me any good .. :D
@TimVanRoy10 ай бұрын
Starting with Luttrell can mess up your technique to such an extent that it takes you years to recover. I know because that is the route I took when starting out 😅 My advice now would be to start with some songs by Chet Atkins: Wheels, Baby's Coming Home, Chaplin In New Shoes & Winter Walking are all excellent examples of songs that are challenging but doable. From there on you can step things up to the first Tommy-songs. You can find covers for all those tunes on my website (no account or log-in is necessary to view those).

Getting past this part takes a while but just don't stop playing even if you see no improvement, it'll get there.
