I have an '84 fretless 1A, which is an awesome bit of kit. Not sure about the active bit of it, although it can make is very boomy if you need that sort of thing at a gig. It has a graphite nut and is all-black, even the back of the neck. I've seen people asking for daft money for these, although I don't exactly know why. The fretted ones seem to be cheaper. Anyway, very solid, well-made basses and I much prefer them to a Fender P-bass by a mile.

i think the active boost is just a bit old fashioned, could easily be replaced with a modern unit that would do more and use less batterys if that was your thing. oh that sounds like you have the 2 neck version thunder - it came with a fretted and a fretless neck in the case so you could swap them!

@@MADMALKO I don't mind the old active bit - it more of less makes it boomier or thinner sounding. I dunno if it had two necks, although I know there was a Spectrum LX bass that had that option (with allen-key 'sort of quick release' neck bolts. My 1A just has regular bolts). There are various fretless versions of the Thunders I,II and III, with different bodies and pickup arrangements. Then again, Westone seemed to make so many versions of things in the early to mid-80s that I wouldn't be surprised if there were special versions and there aren't any catalogues left which show them! I know there's a later 1A that has one of the later blocky pickups similar to what was in the Spectrum and later Thunder IIIs, although it only had one switch. You very occasionally see those for sale.

@@functio1 it may have been the spectrum bass yes, having some sort of fancy neck bolts rings a bell too
