See, this scene (and the titles, which still give me goosebumps 15 years on) shows such promise. If only the rest of the movie was like this, or like the first episode of the new animated thunderbirds series (Ring of Fire), the whole movie would’ve been brilliant. Sadly, the makers of Thunderbirds forgot that their greatest assets, the reason everyone went to the film, were the Thunderbirds themselves.

Watching this in the theater, the thought kept running through my head: "Why are they showing us the _sequel_ FIRST? This one should've been called _Thunderbirds 2: Revenge of The Hood._ " If you're gonna introduce International Rescue to a new generation, start with an Origin Story, showing how Jeff formed the operation and why, with the obligatory construction montage, followed by at least three big rescue scenes! Of course, The Hood would be in the shadows, trying to learn their secrets, only to be thwarted.
@McSuperfly1012 жыл бұрын
I generally like Jonathan Frakes (the director) but he made no secret of the fact that he wasn’t familiar with Thunderbirds before getting the gig. It’s clear that they were all heavily influenced by the Spy Kids movies rather than looking to make a faithful adaptation of the original show.
@finnicol-taylor29766 ай бұрын
Agreed. I think this film actually would have worked well as the middle part of a trilogy.
@1madhammer2 жыл бұрын
Here’s the thing. In the TV show, International Rescue put a huge emphasis on their organisation being a secret, forbidding any photos / film being taken of them and their machines. Thunderbird 1 even had a built-in detector that could warn them if it was being filmed / photographed. Half the plot of one episode involved them chasing The Hood after he filmed a rescue and tried to escape with the footage. This film took that super important plot point and threw it out of the window within the first ten minutes. All I could think of watching this scene was that there was no way they would have ever let a rescue be televised in the TV show. You immediately know it’s not going to be faithful to the original. Which is a pity, as a live action Thunderbirds film had a lot of potential
@McSuperfly1012 жыл бұрын

The team for the 2004 film just accepted that the actual idea of keeping IR's entire existence a deep dark secret in 2004 or whatever point in the future it is supposed to take place would be laughable unless you want to make them assholes screwing with peoples phones and cameras just for being in the area, hell the 2015 show threw the idea of IR being a complete and total secret from the public out the window to where in the FIRST MINUTE of the series when a CHILD was able to identify Thunderbird 2 as International Rescue.

Seeing how well done this scene is is kind of sad for me personally when I think of this film and how great it could've been as a live-action version of the show I treasured as a child. Here, despite how needlessly cheesy it comes off with the news reporter and the kids watching, and how needlessly annoying it is to cut back and listen to Alan and Fermat when they're not even saying anything important, it looks and feels how a Thunderbirds film should, with good enough acting with a touch of humour, good visuals in a tense rescue scene and a dramatic score from Hans Zimmer. But once the family's home, it goes all wrong. Let me explain... I should point out that the film wasn't all bad. The Thunderbirds and all the gadgetry looked great in live-action. Bill Paxton made for a sensible and competent Jeff Tracy, even if he wasn't as strong as the original voiced by Peter Dyneley. Ben Kingsley gave it his all as The Hood, even though I would've preferred to see a more intimidating portrayal. Sophia Myles and Ron Cook performed very well as Lady Penelope and Parker respectively, although I would've preferred it if they were used more as stealthy agents rather than tedious martial artists. And I do like the nods they give to the original series like having Brains walk like his puppet counterpart, and the instance strings are seen coming from Fermat's hand in a close-up, doing the opposite of what the original series did in close-up shots of body parts performing actions that would've been impractical to do with the puppets themselves. As for what's bad, there's just too much of it. To start off, why does the focus of the film prioritise Alan, Tin-Tin and Fermat instead of the entire Tracy family? It's not like these three characters are even written or acted well enough to justify this. Alan is an unlikable, self-entitled, whiny shit who never seems to even learn from his flaws, yet he's supposed to be the one the audience roots for. I know there were one or two moments in the original show of Alan being upset at being restrained from what he wanted, but not to _that_ fucking extent! Tin-Tin just comes off more like a cheesy teen love interest than the sensible adult she was in the original series. And regarding Fermat, why does he even exist, let alone have more focus than Brains? Has Brains ever even needed a child? I think Grandma Tracy would've been a better character for the story than Fermat, the latter of whom was just a waste of time and space. And through all of this, Scott, Virgil, Gordon and John don't get to contribute anything significant to the plot. Sure, John got a bit of a personal video chat with Jeff at one point, but that's it. And why can't we see more rescues like in this scene instead of the the main characters constantly on the run from The Hood's goons while the rest of the Tracy family are stuck in space on Thunderbird 5? The Hood never even had any connection to the family in any way in the original show. He was just a mysteriously gifted mercenary who was looking to become wealthy from possessing International Rescue's secrets. And why are they referred to as "The Thunderbirds" instead of International Rescue? That's like calling the Power Rangers "The Megazord" - it just doesn't sound right. Yes, Thunderbirds is the name of the vehicles, but not the organisation. The narrator correctly named them in the intro, and we see the IR badges - what was so difficult about getting the name right for the rest of the film? If it was me, I'd have directed this film to be more of a techno thriller like how the Fast & Furious movies are, putting the focus on the ENTIRE Tracy family, and having the surviving voice actors of the original Thunderbirds having cameo roles (maybe even bigger roles) wherever possible. It'd also be a story that features all the other characters (Brains, Kyrano, Tin-Tin, Lady Penelope, Parker, The Hood, etc) from the original show, and a plot that culminates in a mining disaster similar to the same one in Germany that gave Gerry Anderson the idea for Thunderbirds in the first place. I certainly would not have pandered to younger audiences with some tedious mix of Spy Kids and Home Alone scenarios, neither of which Thunderbirds should ever be about. I hate that Gerry Anderson's puppetry works are categorised more as being solely for children, and this film did nothing to make it any better. In reality, films based on Gerry Anderson's works _could_ all work for older audiences too, just as well as any superhero film that comes out today. Superheroes weren't taken very seriously to begin with, but after years of effort going in, they're the most dominant film genre of this day and age. This film, overall, does a big disservice to the Thunderbirds franchise. In the first few scenes, it followed the status quo of its source material. But after that the makers were like "Well, fuck it. Let's just do whatever we want."
@EthanDean572 жыл бұрын
What a brilliant write-up, genuinely enjoyed reading that. I don't have much to add, I just agree on all points about how much more this could have been. There are flashes of potential throughout; I felt TB3 docking with TB5 was another good scene, Gordon's seriousness was spot on - I feel like Ben Torgersen would have made a great Scott (pardon the pun.) But, as you say, the plot is completely misfocused and it falls flat in general. I would love to see a darker, grittier, more adult take on Thunderbirds. Tales of heroism in the midst of genuine panic and peril rather than some Spy-Kids knockoff and I can't say how much I love your idea to have everything culminate in a disaster based on the one that inspired Gerry in the first place. I feel like you and I should be in the pub sketching this out on a napkin - trust me, your passion is shared. The 2015 series was okay, certainly better than this, but even so there's still so much potential we may never unlock...
@ryanodonovan94972 жыл бұрын
@@EthanDean57 It could be done. The biggest factor to consider, though, would be how marketable Thunderbirds would be globally. I haven't seen much to indicate that it would be globally beloved unless maybe they got more high-profile actors. Oh, and the way I'd market it would be having AC/DC's Thunderstruck play during the trailer. As far as being faithful to Thunderbirds without being patronising to children, that could definitely be done. Some things that prove this are some small details in the film. There's a mention of Brains' real surname, Parker's nickname and the island's antenna, all of which only _briefly_ appeared in the original series. So I know from that that the filmmakers could've done better, but they didn't take it seriously enough. As for me, I can only go so far with plot ideas as I've never had enough to comprehend that of a full movie. It's just not really for me. Anyway, thanks for the complimentary response. It took a couple of other people's reviews and analyses for me to come to the conclusions I did, but I got there.

All great points here, and I especially wish the movie had more scenes like this. Just to comment on the part about the organization's name, it makes sense they would be referred to as "The Thunderbirds" by the general public because it's a catchy name that actually sticks. "International Rescue" takes too long to say and it better refers to the whole organization rather than the elite team of pilots in it. Just like how the Navy has its Seals, International Rescue has its Thunderbirds. Brains is part of IR but he doesn't pilot any of the ships so he probably wouldn't be titled a Thunderbird technically (might be wrong about that, not sure). The way I see it, IR is the organization and the rescuers are the Thunderbirds. The narrator also says "they go by the name they call their incredible machines" in the movie's intro anyway so that was explained. (Not sure if this was any different in the original show, never watched it but I always loved this movie for its concept. It deserved a much better plot though, could've been a great movie if things were done differently)
@ryanodonovan94972 жыл бұрын
@@theflash691 To address what you weren't sure of, the public in the original show always referred to International Rescue by that name, and never found it too long to say. Your comparison, though, does clarify a bit more to me the public calling them 'The Thunderbirds' as something they'd find catchier. Still, all involved deserve credit with the organisation's name, not just the pilots. So what if Brains doesn't pilot any of the ships? He still BUILT them and made them usable for the Tracy family. Then again, the film doesn't do the character justice, and mainly because they chose to focus on a pointless son that the character never needed.
@theflash6912 жыл бұрын
@@ryanodonovan9497 Makes sense. I don't think the movie actually specified who built or designed them but it makes sense that Brains would've had a big part in creating them, guy's a literal genius. Kind of assumed he was just Jeff's right hand man and head computer scientist for IR. If anyone outside the pilot team deserves the Thunderbird title it's him. And I agree they should've focused more on his character over Fermat, but they probably just added Fermat so the main trio could have someone with above-average intelligence and experience with computers and hacking (they still could've gotten away with Alan having that skill though). The way they went with this movie, like him or hate him he was still an essential character to the group since he and Alan were probably the only ones capable of operating the ships besides Brains, who needed to stay at HQ to keep things in check. Realistically for an organization worth billions you'd expect them to have at least one qualified pilot they could trust for backup in case of emergency, or at least one of the brothers should've stayed back. I get that if your family member is about to die you wouldn't be thinking the most logically before taking action, but still. They thought it was a meteor that hit T5 and that's something they definitely would've planned in advance for and had a protocol to follow that would've probably involved keeping a backup pilot at HQ. Seems unnecessary they would send 4 pilots for a rescue mission that would've taken 10 minutes onboard if the airlock weren't jammed. I know for sake of the plot all of them needed to be stranded so Alan and his friends could save the day lol, still doesn't make much sense though. Also pretty subpar security on Tracy island if a massive submarine can wash up and allow the bad guys to waltz on in without anyone knowing. Even if the location is secluded enough there still should've been security personnel in case there ever was an intruder on the island. It was naive of them to never plan for something like this and they should've had people trained for these types of scenarios. Technically the Hood would be able to use his darth vader powers to deal with them but security still could've alerted everyone sooner and gave them time to plan their next move. Especially Tintin who also has powers and could've helped prevent them in some way if she had time to get to the control room before the goons arrived.

I'll take it the producers never watched the episode "Martian Invasion" before filming this, because IR were always adamant that they are not filmed during rescues, and yet they are filmed here and don't care less. Also, in Martian Invasion they basically spent the second half of the episode chasing the Hood, just to keep their organisation intact, because he had been filming them at the time of the rescue. No wonder the narrator in the opening credits said that Tracy Island is in the South Pacific Ocean, because there always being filmed!
@danielyeshe8 жыл бұрын
I think it made sense for the not being filmed aspect to be dropped. In a series writen in the 60s it might have made sense but in a world of smartphones it doesn't so much.
@1993digifan6 жыл бұрын
Don't forget that the original series was made in the SIXTIES, where they would have had some control over being filmed, but once we got to the 2000's, hell even when handheld recorders became common place that whole aspect made no f*cking sense, considering how EVERYONE would have a cellphone to record or take photos of them because, IT IS NOT THE SIXTIES WHERE THEY COULD JUST FRY THE NEWS FILM, so unless Brains was able to make something that would short-circuit just the phones and news cameras and not other electrical devices like pacemakers. Think of it like the Kennedy Assassination, while with the technology from the 60s there were only a few recordings and a few dozen photos in those moments, but if they had the technology of the 2000s there would be HUNDREDS of videos and THOUSANDS of photos of it when it happened because everyone there would have a cellphone or handheld recorder, because of how technology has changed.

I really liked the designs of the Thunderbird aircraft! Thunder Bird 2 is one of my favorites but I really liked Thunder Bird 1 because it looks really awesome. Also why can't Alan and his friend reveal their location and identites to their classmates at school?
@WarGrowlmon189 жыл бұрын
One of my favorite fanfics taking place years later has Alan once he returns to school change to stop being so rebellious and someone the school can count on more. Then the school gets set on fire and Alan risks his life to help people get out and becomes a true hero in everyone's eyes. Unfortunately he gets trapped and is badly injured. The Thunderbirds eventually rescue him but he's left in bad shape while Fermat discovers that the fire was deliberately set.

This is one of the things I disliked about the movie. In the series, International Rescue ensured the identities were kept secret. But this movie criminally exposed it via a cliched news report. Wouldn't Thunderbird 1's photo/video alert flash at this point?

+Oxtail Chamberpot in the new series no one has actually been seen filming the thunderbirds like in this. @PoissonVisageStudios9 жыл бұрын
+Johnno9989 I think that it's actually better this way, because there's so many cameras in modern day, let alone 2065, that not getting filmed by anyone is just unrealistic.

+Oxtail Chamberpot The new series does keep the secret. In one episode, someone found a poor quality pic of TB3 on the internet which he used to make a model rocket of TB3. When Scott finds out, he makes a comment about trying to keep the secret. This scene here is the only part of this 'Thunderbirds' film that's even remotely like it. Shame, because Thunderbirds has potential for a great family action movie.

The way they tried to indicate to the audience that the teenagers would make good Thunderbird pilots and the dialogue throughout this whole scene are really poorly handled. My memories of this movie are incredibly vague, but it definitely feels like an early 2000s kids movie. It's a got a real Agent Cody Banks vibe.

Never write Jeff like that again that’s a crime hahahaha but people didn’t like how the good was portrayed this way which I also strongly disagree to it makes the “I don’t want to save your life, but it’s our job to save EVERYONE” more interesting that Alan has to save the hood and do RIGHT what his father did wrong and it makes it more believable that the good is actually evil so yes this good was nice and also side note: “I kinda liked how the hood actually DID something and not just sit around to make pictures etc.

I think the movie should get a reboot and get it done properly

I still like this scene, but there's one thing that annoys me: in the TV series, Thunderbird 1 always arrives on the scene first, because it's faster than Thunderbird 2. Scott's role is the first responder and rescue coordinator, and it's his job to get there as fast as possible ahead of TB2, assess the situation, communicate with any locals or authorities, and carry out any rescue work that doesn't require TB2's heavy equipment. I guess the problem with this is that the rescue would have needed a longer scene and more dialogue from Scott, but unfortunately what the producers, writers, or director wanted was for the scene to be done and dusted as quickly as possible so that the plot could go straight back to Alan. It's a real shame, this movie could have been great if they'd focused on the entire International Rescue crew and made the movie about a proper rescue situation......
