Fantastic video, thank you for explaining this so well! I was wondering why my dock wouldn't charge my Dell XPS15, and you answered this simple question that I couldn't find the answer to in any other place. Thumbs up!

Thanks for the nice clear explanation of these types of docks! I just got an XPS 13 & have been trying to figure out what I need to set it up w/ monitors. This gave me a little better idea of what to look for. Thanks!

Is this compatible with the Apple TB/TB2 to TB3 bi-directional adapter? I've read that it works fine but wanted to double check.

How can I connect 3 monitors using the SD5200T using a HP Elitebook?
@RockstarBruski6 жыл бұрын
Nice review. These thunderbolt and USB c connections on laptops are confusing people that's for sure! I'd like to remind people that in addition to the monitors having v1.2 display ports if you want to daisy chain display port monitors at least one of the monitors needs to have a display port out. Seems obvious but many monitors do not have display ports out. Also experience daisy chaining display port monitors sometimes windows 10 gets confused and doesn't send signal to both monitors correctly. So on msi gt70 laptop I decided to stop using display port chaining and instead use the hdmi out port for one monitor and display port for another monitor. My msi gt70 laptop had 3 ports out. Dp, hdmi and vga. BTW I don't recommend msi laptops due to their subpar product support. My laptop has a software issue with the touch pad and msi support techs refuse to develop a patch to correct it and blame microsoft. Is BS and I'll never buy another msi product nor recommend their products because of their lack of customer support in this situation.

I've had a thunderbolt dock for some time. I got mine from owc. It is horrible. It never worked properly. Interfered with Bluetooth operations on a telephony app I used and also had other audio issues. It also caused video issues when using HDMI and thunderbolt for multiple monitors. These are expensive devices and, in my opinion, not worth the trouble or the cost. Owc replaced one for me with another. It's just as bad.

Hi Lon, how do these affect the overall performance of the laptop? These seem like a great dock, connecting a single cable. However does the computer work harder delivering hdmi from thunderbolt vs just using the HDMI port on the laptop?

I lost my AC power adapter for this unit. Where can I find a replacement AC adapter OEM or generic?

Is it reliable over time? Didn’t find so much reviews or even people talking about it. Regarding the front USB ports, do they charge at 2.1A and 3A as the brand implies?

Are both those displays powered running on DP Alt Mode -- are they both powered by the gpu? or is one using displaylink cpu driver?
@LonSeidman5 жыл бұрын
there is no displaylink on the dock, it uses the DP alt mode through the thunderbolt cable.

Kind of disappointing that this dock doesn't have a native HDMI port while the USB-C one does. I have one thing I wanted to ask. I have an MSI laptop with a Thunderbolt 3 port. I purchased a Dell-branded dock to connect my monitor and peripherals with a single cable. It worked, including with my external G-Sync monitor. However, I noticed that my GPU was running about 10 degrees hotter than it normally did when everything was connected to separate ports on the laptop, which included the monitor from the computer's built-in mini-DisplayPort output. Is there a way you can test this with the Kensington dock shown here? Can you measure your CPU and GPU temperatures with the laptop connected via its dedicated HDMI or DisplayPort out then do the same thing with it connected via the dock? I'd like to see if this was an issue with the Dell dock or perhaps something with my computer specifically.
