it is Kaiser Jeep M715.based upon the civilian Jeep Gladiator/grand wagoner. the tornado ohc 230 l6 was used in the USA starting late 1962 till 1964-65 in civilian gladiator/grand wagoner. military use ended in 1969. Industries Kaiser Argentina made the 230 l6 till 1973 and they made speed parts for them!!! look on EBay and craigslist international. the m715 did not see much combat use and a lot wear only used as a cargo transport units for light duty use as the frame and drive Trane could not take abuse . a lot wear used for civil defense that is why it is white. the radio looks like a Motorola and was for the upper hf band below cb chanel 1 around 26mhz or low band vhf hard to tell but if it has a 102inch antenna it will be for hf 26 mhz. the fuel pump had a vacuum pump for the vacuum wipers, the thing in the grill is the rectifier for the 300-400a alternator. with the battery terminals never use the bolt on type total junk use the brass marine type or military ordinance type NAPA has ether type thay just have a long bolt that uses copper welding terminal lugs that you crimp on the battery cables. the plugs look standard just reuse the weather type boots. I would use a electronic ignition conversion kit. the dizzy looks like a holly or auto light or Lucas. if the cap, rotor, wires, are junk, use civilian jeep parts. just make sure the plugs look the same and are the same heat range. looks like a normal dizzy with cover and weather proof wires. I would change the oil use shell rotella t4 with marvel Mistry oil and napa gold filter , fuel filter, I would check the radiator to see if it is plugged/ junk. prime the oil system treat like a fresh rebuild. best of all follow the book to the t on the truck and do things to mill specs. should be able to find gov publications on this specific truck and in general how to repair things to mill specs. another thing I would do is study the electrical system as they are odd. the alternator could be junk as well the fuel pump. if fuel pump is bad gravity feed it to test. take care.

Gotta love a military vehicle set up for deep water fording. This is a little older than the trucks i worked on in the marine corp but looks like some of the technology didn't change. Air controlled wipers. Sealed engine crankcase ( diesel engines in my case) and utilized crankcase pressure to pressurize the transmission, transfer case and diffs to prevent water intrusion past the seal. Most likely had four 12 volt batteries wired in series parallel configuration to increase available amperage and provide 24 volts to the starter. With that huge generator it may have been a comm vehicle or used on an airstrip. Looks like a 3 phase genny with that junction box in front of the radiator. Hope she fires up

That two way radio is definitely an old timer. I started running service in the late 60s, and that is identical to my radio. It was old at that time. There's another part, under a seat or somewhere, big, bulky and heavy. Old iron for sure. Hoping I get the notification for when you return and try to get it motivating. One of your more interesting projects.

Interesting. I'm not sure the plug wires are water tight. It think they are RF shielded. I don't know why, interference with some kind of radio communication? Even the distributor cap is inside an aluminum shell.

What an interesting find! The ignition system uses aircraft components as far as the plugs and wires are concerned. The distributor actually looks something like a magneto, but may well be a distributor with integrated coil. The plug wires are not only waterproof, but also shielded to help prevent radio interference, as aircraft radio is normally AM, whereas land mobile (except ham) is FM, less prone to static. The big lump on the driver's side of the engine is the military 24 volt generator. The big box above it with the two military type connectors is the regulator. The radio is a Motorola Motrac, definitely low band, and probably around 35-40 MHz, given the CD lineage.
@tomcasale60706 жыл бұрын
the fuel pump is a "dual action" design. these were common in the age of vacuum wipers. the fuel pump also was a vacuum pump (hence "dual action") to supplement engine vacuum. since large vehicles with small engines (like this jeep and larger trucks) often ran at wide open throttle or close to it. in that case not much manifold vacuum was produced and the windshield wipers would stop. this kind of pump is what you have here...

That's an old radio truck, you can identify it by the cooler mounted on the front of the grill it's a rectifier. Instead of an alternator it's running a generator. Those parts are all hard to find when they stop working

Fair, but a good shop can usually rebuild those old generators, or worst case scenario it would have to be updated to an alternator setup and electrical system.

Yes he used a tornado engines in civilian vehicles. I happen to have one Jeep wagoneer. It's painted officially army woodland camouflage. Somehow the motor sergeant got his POV privately owned vehicle in the mix of the military vehicles being painted and his painted. He'd be surprised how many decades at paint has lasted and how long we've owned it. Some say Pontiac had first overhead valve American engine others say that jeep had it first. But they don't go too fast but they go anywhere you want to just about. That wagoneer got over 20 miles a gallon and the beads of the tires hang over the side of those wide spoke rims. There's names that kind of tire forget what it is. The problem with the engine is that the gear at the bottom of the distributor will rotate 180° out from time to time. Pull the distributor rotate it back and replace the small retaining pin then wait for it again. I got a couple of those wagoneers they're pretty neat. I think this Jeep is extremely neat thanks for finding it and doing a video

24 volt electrics on a military vehicle like that often strongly suggests that it was fitted for radio/communications or other electronic equipment such as radar equipment so the electrical system might be rather different to what you'd expect on a road vehicle. This may well have been fitted with a hard box body mounted in the load bay (along the lines of a demountable camper body) to make it a command and control vehicle, which is also strongly suggested by the very low mileage, a general service or troop carrier vehicle of this type would have seen a lot more use whereas a command and control vehicle doesn't due to it's specialisation which is likely to have seen it only used for training exercises and on active deployments. The command car bodies on US military vehicles were often removed when they were withdrawn from service and before sale as the way the load bodies on US military vehicles were specified meant that the bodies could be transferred to a different type of vehicle therefore reducing the huge cost of command and control vehicles as the expensive part, the body and electronic equipment fitted could be transferred over as a unit rather than having to be broken down and then rebuilt into a new vehicle as was frequently the case with British army Land-Rovers. White paint on a military vehicle often means that it has seen service with troops deployed to United Nations operations. If that is the case then if you look carefully on the doors you'll probably see evidence of the UN designator markings on or in the paint. Quite a large number of those heavy Jeeps are still in service with various militaries around the world after either being gifted to them by the US government or being bought as retired US military vehicles and reconditioned for further service else where, which is part of the reason why they're not, perhaps, as familiar in the US as other military vehicles, and another is rust, the bodies could rot horribly and a lot that were sold out of service for further use in the US were probably bought to be worked hard and have long since succumbed to terminal corrosion and serious abuse, a common fate for larger ex-military vehicles...

All you need to do to find parts is find the nearest military surplus dump. There's at least one in every state, and they all have listings of every type of vehicle that was ever assigned to that base, when they were decommissioned, and where they went for the national military surplus auction, which, depending upon state and regional participation occur at least twice per year. I live in New Hampshire, and because most of our New England area military Installations were closed during Clinton's asinine stripping of the military, and NASA's ending of the shuttle program, ( The former Pease Air Force Base having been the Northeastern United States Emergency Shuttle Landing Strip, because it was the only one long enough for the shuttle to land on), And, the now, beyond top secret location of the former Fort Devans Federal Emergency Management Agency - PRISON, (Yeah, FEMA runs their own federal prisons hidden in closed military Installations!) anyway), if you need parts for these old specialty vehicles from the military, those auctions happen here in September, and April, of the state has a separate one because they confiscated or decommissioned state police, department of transportation, or other state agency vehicles.

As far as that noise is concerned and this is something my dad taught me. Take a long screw driver or prybar and place it near where you think the noise is coming from and just have someone turn the engine by hand and just diagnose what it is coming from. Or just do it the easy way and pull the belts off and spin each pulley by hand. Really cool truck though. Both the JEEP and the F100. Good luck to you.

So something I’ve seen on HMMWVs that came out of depo after a full refurbish was a new odometer with zero miles on it. I mean, it was basically a new vehicle since anything that needed replaced was, along with a fully rebuilt engine/transmission/etc. If the original paperwork could be found, I bet it had a bunch more miles, then broke, was sent into depo for refurbishment, then came out and sat around before being sold off/given to another agency as excess (since this was at the end of the Vietnam war). Then whatever that Civil Defense was had it and put the 6,000 miles on it before it was no longer useful to them and they got rid of it. I dunno, just my take on its life...

The manuals are available on pdf at the M715zone.com. Memphis Equipment Company should have any parts that you will need. The M715 was a militarized version of the Jeep Gladiator pickup from the 60s so there will be some parts that will interchange with civilian models. That 230 Tornado had a reputation for valve cover gasket leaks which is no surprise considering their size.

I wouldn't have to guess the distributor is Bendix Style and if it acts funny like it's out of time trying to crank it there's a spring inside of that distributor that controls the timing curve and they tend to break then throws your timing all out of whack if it is the distributor I'm thinking it is I'm pretty sure it is though

Should always vacuum around the plugs before you remove them to keep dirt from falling into the cylinders. Even if you have to rig up a smaller hose to get in there. Also, once the plug moves a little shoot some penetrating oil down around the plug and work it in and to lube the threads. Makes it easier to get them out.

Im guessing since its a military vehicle, and the shit hits the fan , who needs time to search for the ignition key
